Whatever this sickness was it needed to go away and it needed to go immediately. Peggy was really not a fan of drinking ginger tea and hoping that what little nausea would crop up during the day would just disappear. She wasn’t quite sure if she had food poisoning or if she had possibly caught the flu. It didn’t help that she had access to the internet and decided to spend a little bit of time on Web MD to possibly figure out her symptoms. It was probably cancer, like usual.
However, she wasn’t going to let this stop her from having date night with Steve. They had made these plans a few days earlier and she was feeling well enough to make it over and spend some time with him. He was cooking for her once again and Peggy had long decided he was the more domestic one in this relationship because she barely cooked for him. That would probably be a conversation for another time as she grabbed her things and prepared to leave her office.
Her stomach did small flips as she walked to her car and only a couple times when she drove, so she wasn’t quite sure how to categorize it. But it was pushed back from her mind as she made her way to his place, parked, and then went up to his door and rang the bell.
Steve had been concerned about Peggy, and whatever it was that she was going through. He too had done some research, and while all signs pointed to cancer, as it always did, Steve thought that maybe she'd picked up something on their trip. Parasites weren't uncommon anywhere, but he didn't want to bring that up just yet. Maybe well after dinner they could talk about it, but he was just thankful that she was feeling some better.
He'd made something light though, some noodles with a pesto sauce although he had decided to go ahead and make some garlic rolls. He was careful, however, in making sure that the spread on them wasn't too much. He didn't want her getting ill after all.
The table was set, and ready when he heard the doorbell ring. He smiled as he made his way over to it, and pulled it open. "You know," he started although he paused to lean in and kiss her quickly, "you don't have to ring the bell anymore. You can just come on in." He moved out of the way to let her inside, and then shut the door behind her. "How are you feeling?" He asked, brows drawing together slightly in concern.
Kiss was returned and she couldn’t help but let out a laugh. “But what if Bucky happens to be starkers when I come in? That’s the last thing I want to see,” she explained to him about why she didn’t just walk into the place. It felt strange to do that because he had a roommate, but he was more than welcome to do it at her place because she lived alone except for her puppy, “I’m alright….” A purse of her lips indicated how un-right she felt as she stepped into the place.
And just when she stepped inside her stomach decided that it wanted to get rid of anything she had managed to eat that day. She held a finger up to him as she tossed her purse down, slipped out of her shoes, and quickly dashed to his bathroom. She shut the door behind her before promptly kneeling down to the porcelain God. This was getting old really fast and she honestly wished she understood why this was happening. Once things were finished she stood back up and opened up the door knowing Steve was probably standing concerned outside of it, “Do you have any mouthwash, love?”
"Lucky for you Bucky doesn't come out of his room without being dressed." At least, Steve had never witnessed his best friend walking around their home without anything on. Even if it was just pajama pants and a t-shirt, his friend had some issues where body image was concerned. Around Steve, however, he was more relaxed since he wouldn't judge him based upon the scars that marred his body or the useless arm that hung at his side. Steve would never in a million years make his best friend feel like less of a man because of it.
Steve's own pup was out in the backyard playing, at least, she was the last time he'd checked in on her. He'd let her back in soon, but she did have fresh water and shade on the back porch in the event that she got too hot playing outside. He was about to say something when Peggy ran, and he let out a long breath. This was not good. Steve walked to the hall closet, pulling out a washcloth. Going to the kitchen quickly he ran it under ice cold water, and wrung it out. He was standing outside the door by the time she opened it, and he held the washcloth out to her. "Yeah, underneath the sink there." His brows were furrowed in concern, and he was wracking his brain in an attempt to figure out what was going on. "Do you want to go to the urgent care center? I mean, something's not right, Peggy."
The washcloth was taken with a sigh as she used it to cool her forehead down. She didn’t feel feverish at all, but it was definitely a bit exhausting to do it multiple times a day. Once the location of the mouthwash was given she moved to grab it and proceeded to swish it around in her mouth. She would pop some gum in once she got back to her purse, but she didn’t have a toothbrush at his place to truly clean things up. As she swished she thought about this question and a part of her wanted to write this off as something that would go away in a couple days. It was still continuing and it was probably best to actually seek medical attention at this point and Steve was incredibly concerned.
“You might be right,” the words tasted strange coming out of her mouth because she could be a bit hard headed, but he was right, “Maybe we should go. Let me look up on my phone where the closest place that takes my insurance and we can go over.” Hopefully it would be something simple that they could give her some anti-nausea pills for and soothe both of their nerves for the day. She would be more than happy to just take some pills and get on with her life. Squeezing his hand as she passed by him to get to her purse she flashed him a smile of thanks and then grabbed her phone from her purse to figure things out.
He let out a sigh of relief when she agreed to go on to the Urgent Care center. "Alright, good." He leaned over, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead and then turned around to move out of her way. "I'm going to sit the food in the microwave, and get my little lady in."
Steve moved to the kitchen, putting the plates into the microwave since it would heat up just fine. He wasn't that concerned about it really, they could eat if they wanted to or not. He wasn't picky. Opening up the backdoor, he gave a sharp whistle and his pup, Susie as he'd dubbed her, came flying. She stilled once she got into the house, although her tail was wagging like crazy. "Be a good girl, okay?" He reached down, patting her head before he grabbed his keys from the counter and made his way back into the living room. "I'll drive. Did you find a place close by?"
Susie came running over to Peggy and she was more than happy to oblige with an ear scratch and belly rub. The two dogs had been a good investment and she was happily in love with her dog, Angie. She straightened up when Steve made his way back to her and she gave him a nod, “I did. I’ve got it loaded up on GPS, so we should get there in about 10 minutes.” She adjusted her purse as she slipped her hand into his and they made their way to the car to get out of there.
It was a quick drive and the directions were quite simple. Once inside she gave her information to the woman working the check in and filled out a few forms. It was surprisingly not as busy as she thought it would be and she sat down in a seat beside Steve. Her stomach was still a little flippy and she really hoped that she wasn’t going to run to the bathroom before seeing the doctor. Her fingers traced lines on his palm as she finished filling out the forms and waited. Suddenly her name was called and she stood up to acknowledge and turned towards him, “Do you want to come? You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but I thought I should ask.” It seemed rude to not at least give him the option.
He watched Peggy interact with Susie, a light smile on his face. He too believed that the dogs had been a good investment. "Alright, sounds good." The sooner they got there, the sooner they could possibly find out what was wrong. Steve hoped that it was maybe some bad food poisoning at this point. Regardless, he was concerned about her, and wanted to make sure that she was okay.
The drive was short, and Steve found a spot with relative ease. While Peggy worked on filling the paperwork out, he sat there beside her, one hand resting gently on her thigh. When they called her back, Steve sat there, watching her go. When Peggy turned around, however, he was up on his feet before she'd even finished asking her question. "Of course." He knew that Peggy Carter was a strong woman, a very strong woman come to it, but he wanted to be there with her and lend her his strength if she needed it. They were ushered into a room, and Steve found himself a seat out of the way while the nurse did what she needed to do.
A small smile was given to Steven when he said he wanted to come along into the exam room. There wasn’t going to be anything embarrassing going on because he knew her intimately, so she really didn’t have anything to hide. Once seat the nurse asked what the problem was and Peggy explained the nausea and fatigue that had been going on for quite awhile and that they had just come back from a trip overseas. If anything Peggy was at least hoping for some kind of pill to help lessen the nausea if anything because it really wasn’t helping her out.
The nurse listened patiently and then began to go through the steps of taking her temperature, blood pressure, etc, and then asked her if it was at all possible that she was pregnant. Peggy’s eyes went a bit wide and she glanced over at Steve before turning back to the nurse with a small shrug. “I guess it’s always a possibility. We’re usually safe though, so it should be a low possibility,” the nurse made a note and then shuffled a couple papers before asking if she would be willing to take a test, “I guess? If it helps clear things up.” With that the nurse excused herself briefly to go get a test and then coming back to escort Peggy to the bathroom. While she was gone Peggy turned to look at Steve with her eyebrows raised.
"My birthday." Steve replied, looking a bit sheepish. They'd been a little careless in the shower after having one round, and well, he hadn't really thought much about it until now. "That's the only time that really comes to mind." He glanced up at the nurse as she re-entered the room, and watched Peggy as she left.
Steve let out a long breath, reaching up to run his fingers through his hair and scratch the back of his neck. The idea of having a child was -- well Steve had always wanted to be a dad. He'd imagined a wife, kids, nice house with a white picket fence. Dreaming about having a family wasn't just for women, Steve had had that thought more often than not when he had been growing up. Dropping his hands back down onto his lap, he began twiddling his thumbs while he waited on her to return.
When he mentioned his birthday her face paled and a deep frown appeared on her face. If that was the case then there was a definite possibility that she was pregnant right now. The thought of that almost made her weak in the knees, but she was distracted by the nurse coming in with the test. Pregnant. Could she really be? It actually did make a lot of sense and that really scared her. Being a mother was something she had thought about, but not something she was saw in her immediate future and especially not as something completely accidental.
She went through the motions of taking the test and was told that the nurse would come back into the room in a few minute with the results. The nausea was back a little bit, but mainly because of nerves as she walked back into the exam room. Her face was still pale and she wasn’t quite sure what to think now as she sat back down and looked over at Steve. Steve was steady and she had always considered him a rock in her dreams and here for almost the past year that they’ve been seeing each other. If she was pregnant than at least it was with him and she knew that he wanted to have a family sometime in the future as well. She worried her bottom lip with her teeth and tried to figure out what to say.
The look she gave him caused Steve to stand up immediately and he walked over to where she sat on the exam table. "Hey," he placed his hands on hers and leaned in to press a kiss to her forehead, "no matter what is going on I'll be right here with you, Peggy." Steve was nervous too and he swallowed hard, suddenly thirsty. Clearing his throat, Steve looked down at her. "It'll be okay, if you are we'll figure out what we need to do. That's just what we do, isn't it?" He offered her a half smile, part of him hoping that she was and another part still hoping that it was something as simple as food poisoning.
More than anything though Steve wanted to make her feel better, and he removed his hands from hers and wrapped his arms around her in a hug. "We'll figure it out." He repeated while they waited on the results of the pregnancy test.
Steve was so good. She didn’t deserve him at all because she was mainly freaking out internally about herself and not even thinking about how this would affect Steve as well. The kiss to her forehead brought her out of her narcissistic thinking and she was brought back into the world where it was established that it took two to tango when it came to pregnancy. A hand squeezed his as she lifted her head up to stare up at his face. A small smile curled up the corner of her mouth and she gave him a nod, “Thank you, Steve. That’s what I needed to hear. We’ll get through this - whatever this happens to be.” There was only looking forward where Peggy was concerned. First they needed to establish what was going on and then she would start figuring things out.
The hug was returned and she rested her head against his chest. She just relaxed there briefly and just enjoyed how calm she felt with him around. However, they could only enjoy it for a moment because the nurse came into the room. She couldn’t read anything of the woman’s face and she frowned just a little as the nurse came over to the computer desk and sat down. “Well, the good news is there’s a simple explanation to your issues and we should be able to give you something to help with the nausea. Your pregnancy test came back positive.” Thankfully the nurse didn’t say congratulations or anything like that, but Peggy’s jaw definitely dropped at the announcement.
“Bloody hell….”
Steve nodded, "Exactly." He was positive that no matter what was going on they would be able to get through it together. He let out a long breath, still holding onto her when the nurse walked in. Slowly he stepped back, his hand holding onto Peggy's tightly as the nurse sat down. A brow rose at the news, and his heart swelled inside of his chest.
He was going to be a dad.
As Peggy spoke, he glanced over at her, and gave her hand a gentle squeeze. At the very least they now knew what was going on, but what would happen after that was well that was definitely going to be a discussion that they were going to have to have. Steve would, well, he would support her and be there for her every step along the way. The nurse finished with her notes, saying something about getting some prenatal vitamins for Peggy, but Steve was still lost in his own thoughts. He didn't realize it but there was a goofy grin on his face, and he turned to look over at her. "We're going to be parents."
Her mind was swimming at the news and she honestly didn’t know how to take it. A small part of her was excited to be procreating with someone as wonderful as Steve Rogers and the other part was scared shitless at the idea of being a parent. This wasn’t in her 5 year plan and she was going to have to learn how to handle not being in control anymore. It was going to be absolutely insanity and she was thankful that Steve would be her partner for it. The nurse handed over a prescription for some nausea medicine and let the two of them in the room.
That smile though broke through her haze and before she knew what was happening she burst into tears. If asked if they were happy or sad she honestly wouldn’t have an answer, but she would now be able to fault hormones for it all. “Oh god, I’m a bloody mess,” Peggy apologized as she wiped her eyes and then pulled him close so she could give him a kiss, “Parents… that’s a scary thing to say, love. But I’m glad it’s happening with you. Let’s get out of here.” The last thing she wanted was to have a serious conversation about what was happening in a hospital exam room.
Surprise colored Steve's features when Peggy started crying, followed quickly by concern. He moved over to her, arms wrapping around her tightly. "It's okay. I know it's…a lot." That was a bit of an understatement, but it was the best thing that Steve's jumbled thoughts could come up with at the moment. "I'm glad it's with you too." And he was, he'd thought, more often than not these days about his future with Peggy, and that future had included kids even if they hadn't exactly talked about it.
Steve nodded, pulling back and helping her off the table. He put an arm around her shoulder, still holding onto her as they exited the room. He was sure that they would be okay, that things would work out for the best, but for now he was going to take care of his girl the best that he could.
