Who: Abigail Hobbs and Virgil Hawkins
What: Getting ice cream
When: When they agreed to meet.
Where: Starting on campus - ice cream shop.
Status: Ongoing
Warnings: None.

Abigail stood by the flagpoles, watching for Virgil to arrive. She wore an ivory tank top, pale pink skinny jeans and a tan scarf around her neck to hide her scar. She was trying to keep it simple and at the same time, be a little more feminine than her usual hunting inspired clothes. She wasn't sure if this was a date, or just hanging out. Either way, she thought it would be nice to spend time with someone close to her age. Before moving the oc, her life had been sheltered in many ways, and she felt like she was still learning how to be normal.

Abigail gave Virgil a wave and a friendly smile when she saw him. "Hey."

There had been a time, just last week even, when Virgil could not imagine a life without his mother. She’d always been there for him, helping clean his scraped knees or scold him when he did something stupid. She and his pops had always been a great team, and as far as he was concerned, they’d brought him up well. Hell, they hadn’t even done so bad with Sharon. Or, for that matter, Richie, who spent nearly more time at Virgil’s house than his own.

He hadn’t dreamed of her death. He hadn’t dreamed of his father getting the call that she’d been hit by a stray bullet during the gang riots, hadn’t dreamed of the funeral, hadn’t dreamed of any of that. But he sure remembered all of it in his dreams, and it had hurt. It had hurt bad. But his moms was still okay here, he’d called and made sure even, and the pain had faded when he’d heard her voice on the phone.

He really couldn’t imagine having lost her here, and then dreaming of it happening all over again years later. Seemed like a good way to reopen a wound that should be given time to heal. Like it would be twice as painful as just losing her once. The least he could do for someone who’d done that was buy them ice cream. It probably would have been better if he didn’t need her to show him exactly where to get said ice cream, and it definitely would have been better if he had his own car, but what could he do? Back home he’d only ever used his pops’ car, and, well, his pops needed it more than Virgil did.

“Hey!” Virgil said, waving back at the girl with the scarf around her neck and jogging to close the distance sooner. “Abigail, right? Virgil,” he said, holding out his hand. Even though she’d probably already figured that out, having waved to him and all.

"Yup, that's me." Abigail had a bit of an advantage. In her life, and especially in her dreams, she always had to be on guard. She had a habit of noticing people that she hadn't seen on campus before. It made it easier to focus on those people and guess which one was a cal tech student looking for her. There was a nice change of pace; this time she wasn't trying to identify potential threats.

She shook his hand with the smile still on her face. "It's nice to meet you in person, Virgil."

“Great! Though, I’ll be better once I get some ice cream in my belly,” he said, patting his stomach. He started to walk toward the bus stop, sure that Abigail would follow him. “So, you from around here? Or did you move here for school?”

"I moved here for my classes. I'm from Minnesoata." Abigail answered as they made their way to the bus stop. "I'm still getting used to these summers. The ice cream will definitely help. What about you? Are you from California?"

“Minnesota huh?” Virgil asked, raising an eyebrow. “You’re pretty close to my neck of the woods,” he said. “I’m from Michigan. Detroit,” he said. And wow, was California ever different. “Loving these summers though. They’re a little hot, but that’s what the beach is for.” And ice cream, of course. Ice cream and the beach was truly the best of both worlds.

"Detroit? You're a big city guy. I'm from a small town, but we were near Bloomington." Abigail chuckled at herself. "Which is still nowhere near as big as Detroit. It must have been exciting there." Abigail sat down on the bus stop bench, leaving room for him to sit next to her. "The beach is awesome. The ocean kind of looks like it goes on forever."

"Exciting's one word for it," Virgil snorted. "Lotta crime. But it was home. I rag on the place, but I miss it sometimes." And it wasn't just because of the people. After all, his best friend in the whole world had followed him here, and he still found himself thinking of the place sometimes. "What was small time living like? Was it one of those places where everyone knew one another?" Virgil had always thought that kind of living must be nice.

He nodded. "Oh yeah. The ocean's really good for making you feel kind of small. Not in a bad way. But it's just so big, and there's so much out there that we just haven't heard of before. You know, they recently discovered a new kind of whale."

"Yup. Everyone knew me. Or thought they did." Abigail had to make an effort not to sound too bitter. They had known her as the girl whose father had killed her mother, and more rumors had spread from that. She'd been treated as her father's accomplice and a potential future killer, even though she had nothing to do with what he'd done. "It makes me glad to be out here where people can have a fresh start and not have to deal with all that judgement."

"it's the best way. Looking at the ocean makes me feel really free." Abigail smiled at him. "A new kind of whale? Did they find it near here?"

Virgil gave her a sympathetic look. Aside from the racism he faced, which he doubted he was going to get away from no matter where he moved, most of the judgements he’d received back home had been more along the lines of the fact that he played DnD and liked to spend extra time in science lab, and the flack he caught from those had all but disappeared once he’d graduated from high school. It didn’t sound like whatever she faced at home was even on the same level, and he moved to give her shoulder a comforting squeeze. “If you gotta get a fresh start anywhere, California’s a good place to do it,” he said, smiling.

“No, not near here. A few of them have washed up in Japan, and a couple more in Alaska, though they haven’t seen any living yet. But can you imagine? Discovering a new mammal species in this day and age? There’s so much out there we still don’t know. It’s really amazing!”

Abigail flashed him a soft smile when he squeezed her shoulder. He was being very kind and she did appreciate it. "That's so true. There's so so much to see and do here. I've got my classes, my job, the beach." There were so many things she had now that she couldn't have had back home under her father's control. "And Cauldron ice cream. I think you'll like it. Have you ever had a puffle cone?"

"That is incredible! I hope they find living ones." Abigail commented. "I read somewhere that we know more about the surfaces of the moon and mars, than we do the ocean floor. It sounded like it could be true. There might be all kinds of exciting new discoveries hidden in there."

The bus rolled up, and Virgil climbed on to the bus, paying his fair. “Yeah. I love home and I’m kinda sad I had to leave my fam, but here I gots my dream job and I get to go to go to my dream school, so California’s a’ight in my books.” He gave Abigail a quizzical look. “Can’t say I have. What’s a puffle cone?”

“No doubt,” Virgil said. “I mean, the most exciting part of it is that, because they’re whales they gotta come up for air now and then, so it’s not like they only live on the ocean floor. I can’t believe that we haven’t seen them yet.”

"Yeah, that's gotta be it," Virgil snorted, though it was nice that Abigail thought so. "I'm sure it's got nothing to do with all the D&D I play or the massive comic collection I've got home. This ice cream is to die for, by the way."

"Yeah, 'cause people can totally know all that stuff from just looking at you." Abigail gently teased. "I'm sure the stuff I had at home was a lot less popular." She nodded about the ice cream. "It's the best in town. I came here on one of those campus get to know everyone activities last year and I was hooked."

“What, I don’t scream giant nerd to you?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. “Maybe I should invest in a pair of glasses for that.” Or not. Virgil wasn’t ashamed of his nerdiness, not by a long shot, but it was still kind of nice to not have that be the first thing people thought of when they saw him. Detroit was a big city, but the circles he ran in were pretty small, so most people already knew about his proclivities for science, comics, and video games.

Abigail shook her head. "Glasses alone might not do it. If you don't need them, people might think your were going for a hipster look." She chuckled. "You could go old school nerd and get a pair of suspenders like Urkel. Or speak entirely in Star Trek based techno jargon."

"Not really" Abigail admitted. She could see the appeal of fantasy, or any kind of escapism from life and the dreams, though. "But I can do the hand thing." She raised her hand in a Vulcan salute to demonstrate what she meant.

"You don't gotta, but I know it made me wanna. Did you know that tablets were inspired by Star Trek? And cellphones, too." There were a few other things, but Virgil was sure that Abigail would be less interested in things like tractor beams and he didn't want to geek out too badly.

"I do like tablets and cell phones." Abigail used her devices to at least check the network most days. It was the only way she could keep in touch with so many people that understood about the dreams. And it was how she met Virgil. "So, how soon will we be able to tell someone to beam us up?"

“Soon, hopefully!” Virgil said, newly enthusiastic. “Quantum scientists are already experimenting on it with this technique called quantum entanglement. You see…” he started, launching into a rather technical description of how it worked, before he realized that the chances of her following him were pretty slim. “Though, there are a lot of problems with actually transporting humans, so we might not get to see it in our lifetime,” Virgil finished sheepishly.

Abigail had not been expecting a serious answer, let alone such a detailed one. She held in a laugh and smiled. "Maybe that's a good thing. I'm not sure I'd want to experience it. How would you know you'd really be the same person afterwards?" She had a hard enough time figuring out her own identity and separating it from her dream life already.
