Caleb had never been fishing before. Well not in real life at least. He had been with his dad in the dreams but that was about it. He was a bit curious to see what it was actually like. When Rapunzel mentioned she knew how to fish Caleb decided he was going to jump on that opportunity.
So far it wasn’t all that exciting. They were just sitting on a boat, lines in the water and nothing was happening. It was actually a little boring. “Is it always this full of excitement?” he joked glancing over at Rapunzel.
It was a very random conversation to have fishing come up in it, but Rapunzel had done a lot of strange things when she was growing up. She could shear a sheep, use a loom, throw pots, and all sorts of other crafty things. It had been quite a while since she had gone fishing though and since they were just hanging out in the boat the moment she had to admit it was a little boring. However, that wouldn’t rain on her sunshiny personality and she let out a laugh, “This is about as exciting as it gets. It can only go up from here if something actually bites your line.”
“I feel like it’s just a lot of sitting and waiting,” Caleb replied. “And what if nothing bites my line? Then I just wasted a whole afternoon,” he glanced over at her with his usual smirk on his face. He wasn’t so much complaining as trying to understand why people enjoyed this. Why his dreamself wanted to go with his dad. “Fishing and golf. I don’t think I’ll ever get either of them.”
“Hey now, you’re hanging out with me,” Rapunzel reached down to splash a bit of water at him from the lake, “I am not a waste of an afternoon. And we’ll catch at least one thing. I know I’m not the Disney Princess that can talk to fish, but I have faith. But I have to agree about golf. That is so boring.” Rapunzel couldn’t bring herself to do that, but there was something relaxing about fishing.
“Fair point. But you get what I meant.” Despite the fact that he was in good company he wasn’t sure fishing was for him. “Hey!” he protested as the water hit him. “I thought you princesses were supposed to be nice,” he joked leaning down to splash some water at her now. “Wait, which one can talk to fish?” his brows knitted together as he took a minute to think about it. “Oh, that mermaid one?”
“Only if the other person is nice to me,” Rapunzel retorted with a laugh as she settled into her spot. She reeled her line in and decided to switch out the bait to something fresher and then recast outside of the boat, “And yeah, the mermaid should be able to talk to fish. It’s like being Aquaman, but you’re female and you technically don’t get to be human unless you give up your voice, which is so weird.”
“Weirder than long ass magical hair that heals?” Caleb asked quirking a brow. All the Disney movies had weird shit going on in them, but he had to admit he did enjoy some of them. Probably because they gave him a sense of childhood which he had completely missed out on. He was about to say something else when he felt something tugging on his line. “Uh, Rapunzel? It’s moving.” He was at a complete loss for what exactly to do about that.
“It’s completely normal in my dreams….I mean it just grows...and glows….sometimes,” all the Disney movies had people with weird things going on, so she wasn’t going to complain about her own. At least here her hair had seemed to settle down even if it was insanely long and she needed to get that sorted out, but that was for another time. Suddenly Caleb was exclaiming that his line was moving and that was the most excitement for the day. She set her own pole down to go over towards him to help, “You need to reel in verrrry slowly.”
Caleb slowly began to reel in the fish until it was out of the water flopping around on the end of his line. “I caught a fish!” he said a bit more excited than his normal Caleb voice. “Rapunzel, I caught a fish!” He was quite proud of himself even if the task wasn’t completely done yet.
Rapunzel had to reach out to help bring the fish into the boat even if they were going to release it. They had to get a picture! It was squirmly and slimy, but she managed to hold onto it, “Wow! Great job, Caleb. I am so impressed. Now you have to pose with it and take a picture so we can throw it back in the water.” She wasn’t the type to bring the fish home to cook, so catch and release it was.
“Throw it back?” He honestly wasn’t that surprised Rapunzel wanted to release it. He couldn’t see her killing and cooking a fish. Even if that was supposed to be the point of fishing. At least from what he understood. But Rapunzel wouldn’t hurt a fly, she was all about healing. “I don’t know about holding that thing. It looks slippery,” Caleb said eying the fish flopping around in Rapunzel’s hand.
“Do you want to cook it?” Rapunzel’s eyes went wide as she asked him, “And I think you could hold him. It’ll be fine. Just do it so I can take a photo. If I can hold him then you can too.” She wasn’t going to call him a wimp to his face, but she would have to if he didn’t pick it up soon. She held the fish out towards him and grinned as she waited to see what he was going to do.
“Nah I’ll leave that to the professionals.” Caleb did know how to cook but he had a filling cooking a fish fresh from the water took a bit more work and that was something he had no idea how to do. Plus the look on Rapunzel’s face.
“Fine,” he said taking the fish. He held it by the tail while it continued to flop around. “Hurry up,” he said through his picture-ready smile.
Once he was finally posing with the fish she grabbed her phone and snapped a couple photos, “Alright, you look great. Now, let’s put the poor dude back in the water and let him get back to his fish family.” She let out a chuckle after that as she put her phone away and moved to help Caleb toss the fish back into the water, “Do you wanna keep fishing or head in? I’m fine with whatever.”
Caleb carefully put the fish back in the water. “You better not send that picture to anyone,” he warned Rapunzel settling back into the boat. “But let’s head back. That was enough excitement for me.” He could now cross fishing off his bucket list.
“It’s going on Facebook,” she immediately informed him with a laugh as she settled back down in the boat so they could start rowing back to the shore. Yes, they had gotten a rowboat because neither of them knew how to work a boat with a motor, “Alright, let’s get outta here.” It had been a fun day and she was happy that Caleb had managed to catch a fish.
