How long had they been in this room now? Basement? Wherever the hell they were. Someone had to have noticed they were missing. But no way in hell was Veronica going to rely on someone to save her. She could get out of it herself. There were two men in the room with them right now. If only she could get out of these ties she could take them.
There was a pocket knife in her back pocket. Why the guys hadn’t frisked them she had no idea. Quietly as possible Veronica shifted in her seat, eyes glued to the make sure they weren’t looking, and maneuvered the knife out of her pocket. She managed to get it into her hands although opening it caused some trouble, the blade dug into her skin, slicing it. Veronica almost let out a curse but bit her lip to keep herself quiet. Instead she just began working on the tie.
Sharon's pocket knife was in her boot. These idiots had no idea what they were doing, Sharon decided, as she slipped the thing out and popped it open. No one seemed to notice, though, so she started in on the ropes that bound her. If only she could get the duct tape from around her mouth. And she could tell that it was stuck in her hair, too. Balls.
Suddenly, both guys that were supposed to be watching them turned at the sound of a fuzzy message coming over their walkie talkie. It was in some kind of code, so Sharon didn’t understand it, but both guys got up out of their chairs, put their smart phones away, and headed out of the room.
That was her chance. With the guys gone Veronica quickly finished cutting the binds on her hands and broke free. She ripped the duct tape off her mouth. Fuck that was painful but again Veronica kept quiet. She had to. Yelping in pain would only alert the assholes that she was free.
Sharon noticed the guys taking off out of the room, and as soon as they were out the door, she, too, sprung to her feet and tugged her duct tape off. With a sharp intake of breath, she turned to help Veronica. But her friend was already out of her bindings. Sharon smirked a little at that. Strong women had to band together, right?
Just like Sharon, Veronica went to help her friend only to realize Sharon was already out herself. Of course she was, Sharon knew what she was doing. Veronica whipped her head around the room. No windows. They were going to have to go out the door the guys had just gone out. Silently Veronica looked at the door and nodded signaling Sharon. She kept her knife in her hand ready to stab anyone in her path.
Logan was still mumbling about the stupidity of that move at the door. He knew better than that. That was entry 101, but his mind had been distracted. Now his head felt like it might explode after the hit he had taken, and they were being led - maybe to the girls, or maybe not. “So screwed,” he hissed.
The men who had left Veronica and Sharon had heard the commotion upstairs and went to investigate, only to meet the others holding Logan and Leon. “We have two heros here,” one of the men said to the other. “Good guys finish last. You two take them. Give them extra tape.”
Leon probably should have known better than to charge in without thinking. Even if real life hadn’t supplied any hard knock lessons, his dreams certainly had. From getting shot three times trying to go after some gangsters without backup, to getting taken to Peru by terrorists outfitted in his own cuffs, he probably should have known better.
But, here he was, once again the victim of rushing in blind. “Mmm, who’s screwing?” Leon asked stupidly, his voice a little groggy as he returned to his senses. That was wrong. There was something wrong. Where the hell was he. And why was the side of his face wet with blood. He shook his head, trying to clear some of the fog away, and it came back to him.
Sharon could hear the commotion up ahead. She spotted a dark office off the side of the hallway. If the men were bringing Logan and Leon down to where she and Veronica were being held, they’d have to walk straight past them. “Here,” she grabbed Veronica and ducked into the darkened office. Then a few heartbeats as their abductors and the others stomped past.
“On three,” she mouthed to Veronica in the near-darkness. “One… two… three!” And they sprung the door open, surprising the two thugs at the back of the group. Sharon pounced, taking hold of the guy’s wrist and twisting expertly. There was a gunshot, but the bullet went straight into the wall. At the sound of a wrist snapping, Sharon swept her foot under his, took the gun, and sent him sprawling to the floor.
While Sharon got hold of a gun Veronica grabbed the other thug at the back of the group from behind. She placed her knife at his neck using his body as a shield for the rest of the group. “It’s time to let us go,” Veronica said sternly. Although with what she knew of these guys they could probably care less what happened to ghent colleague or whatever the fuck this idiot was to them. But Sharon had a gun again and Veronica knew she wouldn’t hesitate to shoot if needed.
Logan picked up the noise, even through the fog in his head. He needed to move. The years of training were useful. He didn’t have the clearest head, but with the distraction from behind, he moved, jerking his body forward until his captor’s grip faltered. Then he spun, raising his boot to kick the man right in the kneecap. It wasn’t the groin but another sensitive area of the body that often caused the person to crumble, and it was effective.
His hands were bound from the back, but he quickly stepped through his arms, bringing them to the front. Now he could fight back. He looked to Leon to see how he was doing before heading after the girls.
Leon barely had to think about it. Muscle memory took over during the commotion, and while his captor was distracted, Leon swung his elbow back. There was a satisfying crack and spray of blood, and the man dropped his gun in favor of grabbing his nose.
He followed Logan, and paused when he caught sight of the girls. It took him a moment to realize that they had been coming to rescue Veronica and Sharon, and that it was looking like that wasn’t the case. He tried not to look too embarrassed. “Oh, hey. We were just coming to rescue you. There was… there was a whole plan and everything.” Well, probably. Leon couldn’t remember actually coming up with a game plan with Logan beforehand, but maybe he’d just conveniently forgotten about that, and apparently only that, when he got hit on the head.
“I’m sure it was an excellent plan,” Sharon spoke quickly, a consolation prize for the guys. Actually, she was pleased to see them there. Having a little extra muscle was going to help them get the fuck out of there. And that’s really all she wanted to do. Go home. This whole operation was coming down, Sharon would see to it. But the Agency would have to come in with more manpower--at least now they had the intel to do just that.
“But maybe we’ll wing it?” She added, ducking down to draw her knife from her boot again to cut Leon and Logan’s bindings. Two hands were needed, so she passed the stolen gun over to Veronica. Once the guys were untied, she grabbed onto Leon’s elbow to rush them out of there.
“We did distract the bad guys. Remember that.” Logan looked from Leon to Sharon who was working on the tape on his wrists. He had to save his pride somehow, and really, their stupid mistake had worked itself out, so we’ll just move on from said stupid mistake. At least that would happen once they fought their way out. That was the plan.
