Leon had never considered getting a promotion before. At least, not since he’d made homicide seven years earlier. It was kind of freeing. He didn’t need to worry about looking good to the higher ups, even if he and his captain were on good terms (maybe they butt heads once in a while, but Leon knew the Cap had his back and Leon likewise had his). He could wear almost whatever he wanted - maybe not some of his humourous shirts, but he still had plenty of work appropriate ones.
But since Revy’d mentioned that he’d make a good sergeant he’d been thinking about it. Which meant that for the last week he’d been wearing a suit. White button up shirt, a black tie, black slacks, and a suit jacket, which he shed nearly as soon as he made it to the back room. With a finger, he loosened his tie, and then sat down at the table with his the burger he’d picked up for lunch.
He’d been coming to have lunch with Liv for the last few days. Mostly because she seemed like a bit of a wreck and figured she’d probably want company. Partly because the more time he spent with her, the better his off-the-record investigation into her would go. He’d originally tried to buy Liv lunch, showing up with another bag of McDonalds, but he quickly learned that Liv didn’t seem to eat anything she didn’t cook herself, and so he’d had cold McDonalds for supper that night as well.
“How’s your morning been so far?” he asked his favourite alabaster ME as he unwrapped his burger.
Liv was slowly warming up to having Leon around. It still made her anxious but she knew he was just trying to help. She had skipped breakfast this morning and was planning on having something to eat after Leon left. That way her anxiety wouldn’t be so bad.
“Slow,” she replied with a small shrug. “Just the one body.” But she would give Leon the details on that after he ate. She knew better than to bother him with gruesome details while he was eating. “What about you?” she asked still not quite used to seeing him in a suit.
Leon appreciated it. Given the intensity of the laughter every time, Leon honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he learned that there was some sort of game upstairs that involved surprising him with crime scene photos while he was eating, just to see who got the funniest reaction. It didn’t happen a lot, not enough that Leon would start to suspect when it would happen, but it happened often enough to be frustrating.
“That’s good,” Leon said. He grinned widely at her question. “I’ve actually got a suspect in for questioning right now. Figured I’d let him sweat it out for a while in the interrogation room before I go say hello,” he said cheerfully, taking a large bite from his burger.
“Sounds like you don’t even need me anymore,” Liv replied which would usually be a joke but it came out sounding a bit sad. It was probably good that Leon was solving things without much help from her. It was his job after all and it wasn’t like Liv had been up to going to crime scenes or talking to witnesses much lately. But still, she was trying to get to the point where she could get back to it.
“Doesn’t mean I don’t want you around,” Leon said, and then he swallowed the bite he’d taken. He had never needed a psychic in his life, and Leon wasn’t about to tell Liv he needed one now, even if she was being strange. “It sure makes things easier when you’re around. You wanna come up with me after lunch?”
“Thanks,” Liv replied a bit shyly. It was nice to hear she was still wanted although the idea of coming face to face with a possible murderer still freaked her out. Even if she had done it numerous times before. “Um,” he gaze shifted to the floor as she thought about it. She did want to help Leon. A huge part of her missed going to crime scenes and talking to suspects. A lot. “Okay,” she finally agreed.
“Good,” Leon said, grinning. He hadn’t been sure if he should ask, but he was glad he had. “It’ll be the easiest interrogation you’ve seen. You’ll be surprised how quick people are to talk once they’ve been sitting in an interrogation room by themselves for an hour.” He took another bite of his burger.
And then choked when something green appeared in the air behind Liv. He coughed, and pounded on his own chest. “What the hell is that?” he asked once he could breath again, getting up from his seat so he could get a closer look at it.
Liv had no idea why Leon was choking. If she had been in better spirits she might have flat out laughed at his reaction because yes the choking was pretty funny. Still she just turned around to see the creepy green floating thing. It was enough to almost send her into another panic attack.
“I… I don’t know,” she stammered jumping up to her feet. There was a noise behind her as another zombie entered the morgue. But this one wasn’t like her exactly. It was one of the ones that had gone too long without feeding. Just a mindless zombie looking for brains. “Leon look out!” she cried. The last thing she wanted was for him to get scratched or bitten and end up like her.
Was that… was that a zombie? Leon let out a yell - one might have even called it a scream, though Leon wasn’t one of them - and immediately booked it to the other end of the room, struggling to get his gun out of his holster.
“What the fuck?!” he cried, finally getting his gun free and shooting the zombie in the head just in time for a fucking rabbit to come flying out of the portal. It charged at Liv, ready to bite her.
Well Leon certainly seemed to know his zombie lore. Because yes shooting one in the head was exactly what killed them, or her. It didn’t get close enough to scratch Leon, thankfully. However before Liv could say much more about it there was an odd looking rabbit coming right at her.
“What the fuck?” Liv basically repeated Leon’s shocked words. And then her instincts took over and she went from regular old Liv to full on zombie mode. Her eyes turned red the veins in her face prominent. The rabbit did manage to bite her leg but Liv quickly picked the thing up and threw it off of her, it crashed into the wall with such force that it’s neck broke. Well that took care of that. As for Liv’s leg? That healed almost immediately.
Despite the fact that they gave him nightmares, Leon loved to hate watching zombie flicks. He’d watched Dawn of the Dead at least a dozen times. He’d even spent some time planning a game plan for if the zombie apocalypse ever happened (originally as a time killer when he was on a stakeout, but after everything else that had been going on he tended to take it a little more seriously these days). Killing a zombie was almost like child’s play. Terrible, horrifying child’s play.
The rabbit confused Leon for a moment, at least until he saw it attack Liv, and once it was dead it was followed by half a dozen other rabbits. He shot a couple of rabbits, well aware that at this rate he was going to run out of ammo before the green thing ran out of things to send out at them.
“Fuck, Liv, kill the rabbits before they can reprod…” Leon trailed off as he actually turned to look at Liv. What was… what was wrong with her face. What the hell was going on?!
Shit. Her face. She couldn’t control it though, go back to normal. Or as normal as Liv’s looks got these days. Not with everything happening. Her adrenaline had taken over. However of course she noticed Leon staring at her. She was hypersensitive to that sort of thing lately.
“Leon, look out!” Liv said as another bunny came out heading straight for Leon. Now was not the time to dwell on her zombie looks.
Now wasn’t the time to dwell on her zombie looks, but he was distracted enough by them that he didn’t react to Liv’s warning until the little fucker had sunk it’s sharp little rabbit teeth into his forearm. “Arg, fuck,” he said, his attention fully off of Liv now as he flung the bunny into the wall.
“We need to retreat,” he said, as another zombie shuffled its way out of the rift. “We can lock them in here until we can deal with them properly.” Maybe if they were lucky, the rabbits would take care of the zombie problem. He had the feeling that rotting zombie meat would not put off the gluttonous rodents.
Liv wasn’t that worried for herself. She was already technically dead after all. There wasn’t much damage that could be done to her. But Leon was another story. She didn’t want him hurt or turning into a zombie. So retreating it was.
“You out first,” Liv called out throwing another rabbit off of her. “I’ll hold them off.”
Leon gave a loud laugh of disbelief. “You’re fucking kidding, right? Move it, Liv.” Creepy eye shit aside, Liv was a medical examiner. There was no way she could defend herself half as well as Leon could. He kicked one of the rabbits into the wall, where it laid still for a moment. At least until it’s stomach started churning. Seconds later, the first baby rabbit’s head emerged from the wound that had opened. “Now.”
No way was Liv going to leave Leon to hold off some zombies on his own. Even if it was just for a few minutes. She was about to protest when a rabbit seemed to eat it’s way out of another’s stomach.
What. The. Fuck?!
That was way too bizarre and disturbing. And that was coming from a girl that ate brains to survive. “Shoot it!” she told Leon still not retreating herself.
“I don’t have the bullets to waste on the rabbits,” Leon growled. He swallowed heavily, then took a few steps further into the room, closer to Liv but further away from the safety of the door. “This isn’t one of your goddamn video games where bullets just magically appear in your gun.”
And he wasn’t going to waste any more time arguing with her. He grabbed her by the back of the shirt, and went to start shoving her toward the door. If she resisted, well, he had no problems picking her up fireman style and carrying her there. “When we get out of this, we’re going to have a serious discussion about who’s been trained to hold off the bad guys, and who’s been trained to cut open dead people,” Leon growled at her. A zombie came from the rift and started shuffling towards them, but Leon shot it clean between the eyes before it could take more than a couple steps. One bullet left. Shit.
If only Leon knew. But for some reason Liv didn’t think he would take it as well as her other friends had. Plus now was not the time to tell him. Given how he was shooting other zombies at the moment. So even though she had super strength she let him push her towards the door. If something went wrong hopefully her reflexes would be fast enough to keep him from getting hurt. “Don’t let the zombies get near you,” she still protested just as they reached the door. She shoved it open with her back. “Come on let’s get out!”
“I wasn’t born yesterday,” Leon snapped. Which was all good in theory, except when one of the undead started shuffling towards them. Leon had always been a good shot and he hadn’t really missed since he started shooting weekly with Riza, but at the exact moment he squeezed the trigger, one of those goddamn rabbits threw itself at him, biting him on the wrist.
Leon’s face fell. He looked at his gun, then at the zombie, and then, with all his might, threw the pistol at its face as hard as he could. He turned before he could even see if it hit, and shoved Liv through the door with both his hands.
“I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to shoot guns. Not throw th-“ Liv’s words were cut off but Leon shoving her through the door. He was quite rude when he was under attack by zombies and weird rabbits. But that did just remind Liv of how dangerous the situation was.
“Hold the door shut!” Hopefully they wouldn’t break through, although she did know the strength zombies had. Maybe it would be better if she held the door shut. Which was exactly what she did, stepping up next to Leon to help him keep the monsters inside the morgue. Her poor morgue.
Leon was rude even when they weren’t under attack, though it became more evident when there was shit that needed to get done and no one was doing it. He pressed his back heavily against the door, and then slid down so he was leaning against it. Only then did he let out a heavy sigh of relief. His heart was still hammering in his chest, but he was at least able to start regulating his breath a little more.
“I loved that gun,” Leon moaned. Leon had a few guns, but that had always been his favourite. She fit so nicely in his hand. “Maybe if we’re lucky the rabbits will eat the zombies and then they’ll all drop dead and we can rescue her.”
Another couple of gulps of air, and Leon turned to Liv. “You okay? Didn’t get bit or scratched? By the zombies, I mean. Getting bit by the rabbits is alright.”
Liv was getting shit done thank you very much. Leon just wasn’t letting her. But whatever they were out now. They just needed that portal thingy to close. Hopefully sending the zombies and rabbits away with it.
“I’m fine,” Liv replied her adrenaline fading. Her face was back to normal now. “You?” she asked the reality of what just happened sinking in. Now that Leon’s breathing had returned to normal hers started speeding up. What the fuck was wrong with this place?
Okay, Liv wasn’t leaving the room when Leon said, and that was good enough for Leon to get frustrated. “Good,” he said. “I’m fine.” A couple more breaths, and he was climbing to his feet, still holding the door. What if the zombies could break through the door? He was going to need to find another weapon. He glanced around the room. No projectiles, but he could probably take a few out with a chair leg or something. “Now, you want to tell me what the fuck you were thinking? You can’t go running around playing hero, Liv. You could have been hurt!”
Liv knew perfectly well that zombies could get through the door. They were strong. But so was she and she wasn’t going to let anything happen to Leon despite the fact that he thought she couldn’t handle herself. “You could have been hurt,” she shot back. “I’ve lived here long enough to know how to handle myself.”
One of the zombies began banging on the door. Luckily these zombies were the ones that were far gone. Mindless, brainless. They weren’t smart enough to figure out how to get in. At least Liv hoped they weren’t. For Leon’s sake.
Leon sucked in a deep breath when the zombies started pounding on the door. “Yeah? You’ve been doing this for over ten years?” Leon snapped. Living here and being on the Network prepared people for more than the average people, but it was ridiculous that Liv thought that Leon would even consider leaving her to cover their backs.
He took another glance around the room. “Alright, you’re going to hold the door by yourself for a minute. I’ll get some of these filing cabinets in front of the door. Ready?”
Could Leon not yell at her? She was just trying to help and all the yelling was not helping her anxiety. “N-n-no.” Liv stuttered her breathing speeding up even more. She had been in med school not out solving crime. But it was going to take more than a few zombies and rabbits to kill her. Besides if one scratched her it wouldn’t do much. Wasn’t like they could make her a zombie.
She gulped nodding her head. She could hold the door. She still had her strength. Oncoming panic attack or not. “R-ready.” Though she didn’t sound it she really was. She took a deep breath trying to calm herself.
Leon hesitated just long enough to pinch the bridge of his nose. She was falling apart now? And she expected him to have left her alone to the zombies? Aside from the fact that this whole anxiety thing seemed so unlike her, she couldn’t honestly expect him to let her “handle herself” when she was going to act like this. Then he left the door, hoping Liv really was ready to hold the door. He dashed to the filing cabinet against the wall, and began to shove it in front of the door. Once it was in place, he let out a sigh. At least he felt a little safer now, and he and Liv could start coming up with a plan.
But first… “Don’t take the yelling personally, Liv. That’s just what happens in high stress situations.”
When Leon left the door the zombies continued to push and bang against it but Liv pushed back with all her super strength keeping the door shut. And then Leon was back shoving a filing cabinet against the door. Liv wasn’t sure just how much good that would do but it least it was something while they escaped.
“I-it’s okay.” Liv replied still with a bit of a nervous stutter. “Now’s not the time to worry about that,” she agreed. Her breathing was still way faster than normal but that didn’t matter. They had to figure out how to get away. “You think we can climb out that window?” Liv asked not so sure of her suggestions anymore. And the window was a little on the small side.
Leon looked up at the window, frowning deeply. It was awfully small, and while Leon was fairly slim, he did have broad shoulders.
“If we’re lucky. And if you go first,” he said, staring at the window. Before Liv had a chance to protest he looked at her. “I doubt I'll be able to squeeze through myself. I might need someone on the other side to pull me out.”
Liv wasn’t so sure about leaving Leon alone in there. But it was the only option they had and she just wanted to be done with this whole experience. Besides just because Leon wasn’t immortal didn’t mean he couldn’t handle himself. He had made that perfectly clear. “Fine,” Liv said solemnly making her way over to the window and climbing out.
At least that hadn’t been difficult. He frowned at the window as Liv’s shoes disappeared into it, before taking a breath. Goddamn zombies and rabbits and tiny fucking windows. This was his life now, wasn’t it? He let the breath out slowly, then climbed to window. He stuck both arms straight out the window, crossed at the elbows to make his shoulders as narrow as possible.
He could hear the filing cabinet behind him shift slightly across the floor. “Alright, pull.”
Liv grabbed Leon’s arms and yanked with all her zombie strength. She pulled him out of the window toppling over backwards with him on top of her. Her pale cheeks instantly turned pink.
Leon didn’t move at first, more than a little surprised at the strength with which Liv had pulled him through. That wasn’t a normal human’s strength. And inexplicably, it gave him the creeps. He couldn’t exactly understand why, because super strength wasn’t uncommon. And he already knew that she had dream powers in the form of psychic powers. But her eyes earlier had given him the chills, and now he felt a lot like he was cuddling up with a fucking lion.
He realized suddenly that he should probably move, if only because of how embarrassed Liv looked, and he climbed to his feet. “Thanks,” he said, offering a hand to her.
Liv didn’t take his hand. She couldn’t. Couldn’t even look at him once again. Instead she pulled herself up eyes glued to the ground. “No problem,” she mumbled. “We should go. You can get backup or something.” And Liv could get the hell away from Leon who was honestly the last person she wanted to be around right now.
Leon frowned, letting his hand drop to his side as Liv climbed to her feet. What, had he suddenly developed rabies or something? “Take care of yourself out there,” he said, now confused on multiple levels, though he should probably focus on the immediate problem of fucking zombies and killer rabbits. He’d have to put a call out to the Network.
And somewhere in an interrogation room, Leon’s suspect sat entirely forgotten.
