Johanna didn’t know the full story about what was going on, but what she did know was that there were shimmery green portals of some sort all over town and from what she’d heard on the Net, demons were coming out of them. She could only imagine what sort of excuse the news or whoever would make up this time, but at the moment she wasn’t really concerned with that. She had been so antsy for something to happen lately that as soon as she’d heard about the demons, she’d texted Peeta, thought about texting Annie then thought better of it and instead told him to contact Finnick and that the three of them should go out demon hunting. She wanted to hit something with one of her axes and Finnick and Peeta had weapons as well, so as far as she was concerned, they should put them to good use.
After confirming that everyone, including Caroline, was in, Johanna headed over to a spot near Peeta and Caroline’s apartment to meet them.
Finnick hadn’t expected to get a text asking if he wanted to go demon hunting, but after the fight with the monkey mutts back in February, he’d be lying if he said he didn’t want to use his trident again just a little. He’d sent Annie a text, telling her what he was doing and told her he’d come by to see her after so she could see that he was alright then he’d left to go meet up with Peeta and the gang.
Well, demon-hunting sounded interesting. Peeta wasn’t going to say no because getting a little aggression out would be nice and Caroline said she would come along. He would do his best to not get into too much trouble and need her assistance in making sure he was healed up again. He hadn’t actually gotten any weapons from his dreams because he wasn’t exactly skilled at any specific weapon like the others in the group were, which amused him, but he had invested in a couple swords when the cornucopia had shown up and always had a gun from his military time.
So, he grabbed his items and then called out to Caroline to let her know that it was time to head out. It would be pretty interesting to see all of them together taking care of business. They didn’t even really get to do anything like this in his dreams. At least the craziness here allowed them to have a tiny bit of fun from time to time.
Caroline didn’t have weapons like at all. But she didn’t need them really. She was basically a weapon with her super strength and speed. Plus she could always use her teeth, but eating a bunch of demons didn’t sound all that appealing to her. She doubted they tasted any good so neck snapping would be the way to go. And at least this time Peeta was bringing her with him so she wouldn’t have to worry about him getting hurt the entire time. She could protect him and his friends and heal right then and there if needed.
“Let’s go,” Caroline said as she walked out of their bedroom. “You know where we are going right? You lead the way.” Caroline followed Peeta out of the apartment to where Joanna was waiting. “Hey,” she greeted. “Peeta tells me you want to kill some demons.”
Johanna hadn’t been waiting long at their designated meeting spot before Finnick showed up and she grinned as he approached, “Am I crazy for actually looking forward to this?” She asked, fingers tightening around the handle of one of her axes.
Finnick shrugged slightly, “Maybe just a little, but I think we’re all a little crazy after our dreams.” He spun his trident like a baton and placed the butt of it on the ground, “And here come our fellow crazies.” He said, gesturing towards Peeta and Caroline as they approached.
Johanna turned when she heard Caroline’s voice and nodded, “Figured we should at least do our part in the demon extermination.” Might as well put their skills and weapons to good use after all.
“Did I hear us being called crazies? Yep, I feel like that is totally accurate,” Peeta commented with a small chuckle as he approached his two friends. There was a bond between all of them thanks to the shit in Panem, so it made sense that they would fight together and have no issue with that. They had all covered each other’s backs during the Quarter Quell and it wouldn’t be an different here in the OC, “Gotta do a little something to help out the OC when they need it. Can’t believe there are demons around here now.”
Pft. Caroline so wasn’t crazy. She was probably the most sane one of the group considering she was basically immortal. There wasn’t much that could kill her. The other three? While she knew they were skilled (well she knew Peeta was skilled, she was pretty sure Johanna and Finnick were as well) they were still human. So breakable in Caroline’s eyes. She was mostly there to make sure they didn’t get hurt, but helping to protect the OC was also a plus.
“Really?” Caroline asked raising a brow at her boyfriend. “I feel like demons is becoming a common thing.” Plus he was dating a vampire which was kind of close to a demon. But no matter she just liked to tease him. It was out of love okay? “So where are these portals at?” She asked the other two. Caroline hadn’t been paying a ton of attention. The girl had a lot going on.
Finnick laughed and nodded, “I did indeed call us all crazies. I mean, we’d have to be in order to decide to go after some demons instead of staying in where it’s probably ninety five percent safer.” Sure, Finnick could have declined to come along if he really felt that way, but he secretly thought this was going to be fun. Dangerous, yes, but also fun.
“I’ve heard that they’re around some of the major businesses.” Johanna didn’t know how certain places had been chosen for these rifts, but she had also heard that they had opened up in various places as well, “Maybe we should start off by just scouting around. We’re bound to come across one.”
“Sure, I think we can all fit easily in a car, so let’s do that. Who wants to drive?” that was the easiest way to start scouting because he did not want to be left somewhere and have to walk back to the apartments, “I figure once we see something then we can park a bit away and head towards it? I think it might be safer if we park a little further away and then approach them. Hopefully they won’t be completely swarming around everywhere.”
“Sounds like a good plan to me.” Actually none of going out to kill demons sounded like a good idea to her, but driving was the most logical way to go about it. Quick get away if needed. Anything would be quick for her, but for everyone else who didn’t have her speed. “I can drive,” she offered grabbing on to Peeta’s hand to lead them back to the car.
“Alright. Let’s go.” Johanna had been itching to do something for weeks now and it sounded crazy, but she couldn’t wait to fight something. “We’ll head into town. I don’t think these rift things will be too difficult to spot.”
“Let’s just try not to drive right into one of them.” Finnick couldn’t believe that they were doing this, but now that they were out there, he had to admit that he was looking forward to fighting a little. He’d gotten a taste of it when the monkey Mutts had attacked him and Annie.
“Not driving into them in high on the list of things I don’t want to do,” Peeta commented with a laugh. At least they would be able to figure out what was going on once they got a little closer and hopefully they would be able to help out with things. They all got into the car and soon enough they were far enough into the town that he could tell there was a change in tone. They just had to spot something and they could make their way out to fight.
“Damn,” Caroline commented with a smirk. “That was on the top of my to-do list,” she teased as she maneuvered the car through the madness. Soon enough she spotted one of the portal thingys and quickly pulled over. Thank you vampire reflexes. “You guys ready?” she asked already opening the door herself to get out and fight.
Johanna had kept an eye out as they drove, looking for any sort of greenish glare. When Caroline stopped the car Johanna took a moment to take it all in. The rift was pretty much what she’d expected, but the demons were anything but. There were at least four of them and they all looked different from the last. “These guys are ugly.”
Finnick got out of the car, trident in hand and spun it as he watched the demons, “I kinda miss the Mutts right now.” He smirked at the others as Johanna’s fingers flexed around the handles of her axes. “Those at least were small, even if they were pretty rabid.”
“Ugh, mutts were the worst though. I didn’t want to see myself made into the dog ones that Katniss and I had to fight,” he was still annoyed with how the gamemakers had enjoyed creating awful creatures to kill them with. Especially when they were reminiscent of fellow Tributes. He could handle these kind of demons as he grabbed his swords out of the front seat and set the blunt end against his shoulder, “Alright, let’s get these assholes.”
It was still weird for Caroline hearing about Katniss, but dream relationships meant nothing here. Caroline knew that better than anyone. Besides there was no time to think about that. Car parked Caroline headed out straight for the demons. There was a green one with what looked like plants for limbs or branches of plants. Whatever, it’s neck still had to be snappable right? However as Caroline got closer she could feel herself actually getting scared which was not an emotion Caroline felt often. At least not when it came to battles.
“Yeah, the ones in your first games looked like they couldn’t have been very pleasant.” Finnick had only encountered the Monkey mutts, both in the dreams and then in real life a few months earlier. Luckily he’d had his trident and they had been fairly easy to take out. Even Annie had taken one out with one of his kitchen chairs.
“My advice is to kill the demons before they kill us,” Johanna said as they reached the demons. There were about a handful of them of different species or whatever you called demons. Some were walking and some were floating, but they all looked killable to Johanna. She brought her axes up in a fighting stance, “Well, it’s now or never.” With that, she rushed the nearest demon.
“Let’s do this,” Peeta commented with a small smirk. It was going to be a little fun because he knew they weren’t actual humans and they were helping out the rest of the OC, but it was always odd to kill people or things. But, this was what had to be done in this world and in his dreamworld. So, Peeta grabbed his sword and gave Caroline’s hand a quick squeeze before they went into the fray and wouldn’t see each other for a little while.
Caroline nodded in agreement making a run at vampire speed at the demon that still felt scary to her. However she wasn’t going to let that stop her. All the greenness didn’t exactly make it look appetizing. So instead she went for a basic snapping of the neck. No weapons needed for her.
Finnick and Johanna were right behind Peeta and Caroline as they began taking down demons. Each demon killed was replaced with a new one as the previous one was reabsorbed back into the rift. This might not have been something they could stop on their own, but at least they could help out a little before contacting the person who could put an end to this.
