It had been wise of Steve to take Peggy’s phone away from her as they made their way to the airport to leave for their trip otherwise she probably would have told him to turn the car around so they could help fight the demonic threat that was happening around the city. It wasn’t until after they had landed in New York that Steve let her have her phone again and she was bombarded with information about what was happening. There had been a couple hours of fretting and calling to talk to people, but it had been reassured to her that they would be able to hand it without her there.
Finally she was able to just keep her phone turned on silent and only use for photos as she and Steve began to explore his hometown. It had been quite lovely and she was really enjoying herself as she let Steve show her around. It wasn’t until Brooklyn that she got a little emotional and held tightly onto her boyfriend’s hand as the wave of nostalgia surrounding their Dream visit to this town in the 1940’s hit her. When she had sat beside this tiny man and learned that he had the heart of a lion and she had become silently smitten with him. Now she was beside the post serum body of that man who she hadn’t kept her feelings silent about.
It was different, but oh so similar. He had shown her so many things from his childhood and she felt privileged to know these things about him. She was swept up in her feelings for him as they made a detour to the hotel for a couple hours to freshen up for the Fourth of July festivities and celebrate his birthday. Her feet flexed as she reached over to playfully poke at him underneath the hotel sheets and she propped herself up on her elbow with a smile on her face, “How was that for a birthday present, Mr Rogers?”
Steve was grateful that he'd taken away Peggy's phone. He knew how important work was to her, but this was their vacation. A time to unplug, to unwind and not worry about whatever was going on back home. He hated seeing her look worried though, but after some things had been done life went back to normal and they could be their touristy selves.
He took her places that he'd gone to as a child, a bright smile on his face while he talked about his experiences there and all the while he kept his fingers laced with hers. The trip back to the hotel was a good thing, Steve wouldn't admit it to anyone but he'd been hoping for some alone time before they went to the Brooklyn Bridge to watch the fireworks.
Shifting slightly in the bed, Steve adjusted the hand behind his head so he could look at her better, the other coming up to cup her face in his hand. "That was the absolute best birthday present I've ever gotten." He leaned up to steal a quick kiss from her, and then settled back down. "How've you been enjoying the tour so far?" He asked, brows slightly raising as he dropped his hand back down.
The tour had been amazing and Peggy felt like the two of them had moved to a new level in their relationship because this was really about baring their souls and displaying their pasts. She had made sure that they went to visit where his mother was buried and she was still nervous about him meeting her parents because that meant that this thing was serious. But she had sense that was going to happen the moment he fished her out of the fountain after invading her dreams.
When he declared it was a great birthday present her face lit up in a bright smile as she returned the kiss. She had an actual present for him, but it didn’t hurt that they could also use this as a celebration of his birthday. “And I’ve loved it. It’s completely different from seeing it in the 1940’s and I’m glad we decided to do this. New York truly is a lovely place and I can see why you loved growing up here.” It reminded her a lot of London - historic and busy, but she could see the sense of pride within him when he took her around.
"It is vastly different." Steve smiled softly over at her, and he was glad that he had been able to share everything that he loved about New York with her. "It was amazing growing up here. My mom made every day special somehow, and Bucky and I had a lot of adventures here." He wondered for a moment how Bucky was doing with everything going on. He worried about his best friend more than he would let on to in front of him.
"And thank you for visiting mom with me." It'd been too long since the last time he'd visited her grave. The last time was right before he'd moved out to California, and that? That was too long to go without placing fresh flowers on her grave. "I can't wait to see London. See where you enjoyed going when you were younger." Steve was just a little nervous about meeting her parents, although he tended to be good with parents when he met them. Still, this was something special, something that he could see lasting a lifetime, and he wanted to make his best impression on them.
“That is so sweet. I love the look on your face when you talk about your mum. I wish I could have met her in either life, because I would thank her for bringing such a wonderful man into this world. I am very happy that I got to visit her grave with you at least,” Peggy could get sappy when she wanted to. She really did wish she had met his mother and almost wished things had been a little different for the two of them, but apparently that’s how their story was supposed to go, “I bet you two were little hellions. I’m enjoying that mental image.”
“I’ll show you a few of my haunts growing up and then we can go out into the countryside to Kent. That’s where I grew up and my parents still live there, but I moved to London after school when I started working in the military and government,” Peggy explained, “It’s about an hour away. It’ll be a nice break for a couple days, but it’s not as exciting as Brooklyn, which is why we’ll spend more time in London.” She knew Steve would be amazing with her parents and she had to admit that she was nervous as well. It was a big move to bring your boyfriend from the States all the way to the UK just to see your parents. They were going to give her hell.
"You would've liked her." Steve smiled still as he spoke of his mother, "She was a strong woman, very capable of handling herself and two rowdy boys when we were feeling up to it." He chuckled softly, and then shook his head, a still fond look on his face as he thought of Sarah. "But yeah," he reached up to run his hand up and down her arm, "I wish you could've met her too." She had been taken far too soon from this world, and Steve missed her every single day. "We weren't too bad. We tried to mind our manners, but we were boys." He could tell Peggy all about the time that Bucky had dared him to ride his bike down a flight of concrete stairs which he did, and ended up with a broken arm because of it or the time they'd snuck a single cigarette away from one of the neighbors and both of them had thrown up after they'd taken a single hit. Those had been simple times, fun times learning about the world around them.
"I don't mind if it's not exciting or not." Steve lifted a shoulder, "Any place you are is enough for me, so we can stay wherever you want for however long." Well, at least until their flight departed that was. Steve knew that Peggy would likely want to get back home soon with everything going on, and he only had so much vacation time that he could actually spend. Still, he was certain that they would make the best of the time that they had together. "Are we going to do all the touristy things in London?"
Listening to him talk about his mother was on the list of her favorite memories with him. He was so open and expressive and she really wished Sarah had been around so they could meet and talk about how wonderful Steve was. “I love listening to you talk about her,” Peggy commented with a lazy smile as she snuggled a little closer to him. She wanted to just stay in bed forever, but they had to get out of here soon if they wanted to make it to dinner and fireworks after that, “We are going to have to start getting ready to head out. Dinner and fireworks await and I’m excited to be helping you celebrate your birthday.”
“And you are just too sweet. It’s going to take me by surprise when you get a little grumpy,” Peggy was kind of looking forward to seeing him get a little angry. She had seen the fire inside of him in her dreams when it came to Hydra, so she liked his passion, “And we will do as many touristy things as we can while we are there. I think you’ll have a lot of fun there.” She gave him a kiss before sitting up and moving so she could swing her legs off the bed, “I better get dressed so we can get out of here or else I’m going to ask for a couple more rounds.”
Steve enjoyed talking about her now anyway. After it'd happened he'd not spoken to many people about her except to answer questions as to how she died, and all of that. Steve hadn't chimed in with any stories that people had been telling at her funeral, or after when they'd all came over to the house to eat dinner and make sure he was okay. Steve hadn't been okay. He'd felt numb, sad, angry and a lot of other things. Still, he'd made it through and moved away from the place he'd called home. Now, however, he was happy to talk about Sarah, about the life she'd led and all the good she'd done in the world.
He laughed, "I'm sure you'll see it at some point on this trip." The only thing that really got Steve grumpy was injustice to good people, and lack of food. He was one of those hangry types. Steve kissed her back, letting out a groan as she slipped out of his arms and sat on the edge of the bed. His eyes raked down her back, and he reached out to trail his fingertips down her spine. "Well, I mean, we can have another round in the shower if you want." A teasing smile lifted the corners of his lips as he looked up at her.
The lack of food was usually remedied fairly quickly when they were together, but she wouldn’t be surprised if he started acting hangry around here. She turned over her shoulder to look at him when he groaned, a shiver running down her spine when he touched her, and she let out a laugh, “I think that can be arranged since it is your birthday and all. I might just need you to carry me over there though.” Peggy was a strong woman who could hold her own, but having Steve lift her up and carry her was something she didn’t mind. It had been a long time since she was in a relationship with someone she considered her equal and she was going to indulge in that. Especially if it meant having a little fun in the shower as they got ready to head out for the evening.
"It's good to be the birthday boy." Steve replied with a chuckle, pushing the covers off himself before standing up. He stretched his arms over his head, and then raised a brow over at her. "I think that can also be arranged." Steve moved over to her side of the bed, arms going around her before he gently lifted her up. "I love you, Peggy Carter." He leaned in, kissing her tenderly as he made his way to the bathroom. This really was one of the best birthday's he'd ever had, and he'd be sure to show Peggy just how grateful he was.
