John was feeling quite proud of himself. With the prized cakes in the box in his hands, he hoped to put a smile on the faces of two of his favourite girls. Heading up to the front door, he knocked and waited for an answer.

Sarah knew John was coming over and she was looking forward to it, so was Kira. She talked about him a lot, and Cosima too. She had a feeling her little girl would be a science nerd thanks to the combined efforts of those two.

When the doorbell rang Kira ran to answer it, “Hi John” she beamed at him, “I looked for the constellations you told me about”

“Hey there monkey!” John grinned at her, using the nickname Sarah used for the little girl. “You did? That’s great! You’ll have to show me later on tonight!” he enthused, giving the little girl a quick one armed hug against him. “Where’s your mom?”

“Really?” she beamed returning the hug, she liked John he was nicer than anybody else her mum had dated. “She's in the living room, come on” she took his hand and led him further inside, “Mum”

“Hey you” Sarah said with a smile, moving from where she was folding laundry, “You okay?”

“Hey,” John smiled as Kira led him over to Sarah. He leaned over and kissed her soundly before pulling back. “I’m ok, just thought I’d swing by with some tasty goodies for my two favourite girls,” he told her, holding up the box of cakes in his hand.

“Mmm tasty goodies? That sounds promising” Sarah said with a grin and a wink before turning to Kira, “Wanna get me some plates and things from the kitchen monkey?” smiling as her daughter nodded and went to do that.

“This is ok, right? I just thought a treat might be nice for you both,” John asked with a little shrug, finding himself doubting his decision to do this. He forgot occasionally that he wasn’t the one who made any decisions for Kira and that it was Sarah’s job. He didn’t want to overstep his bounds.

“Hey” Sarah said, laying a hand on his cheek, “This is absolutely fine. It’s very sweet and thoughtful” she pressed a kiss to his lips. Sarah was glad that John and Kira got along so well and honestly he was so kind to Kira and patient too. She couldn’t have asked for more.

“Ok,” John nodded and smiled at her, feeling buoyed by her words. “So, do you guys have any plans for the rest of the day?” he asked while they waited for Kira to return, wrapping his free arm around Sarah’s waist to pull her closer to him.

“Actually we don’t” she said looking at him, “Wanna spend the day with us? I’m sure we can think of something to do”

“Not kissing mum” Kira said though she was grinning at them as she put plates and napkins on the little table in the living room.

“Ha, ha” Sarah said as they moved to all sit down ruffling Kira’s hair as she did so.

John grinned at Kira’s sass as he sat down with them. Placing the bag on the table, he reached in and handed out the individual boxes with their favourite cakes in. “Something special for my special girls,” he told them. “So if I'm not allowed to kiss your mom, what would you like to do today munchkin?”

Kira grinned as she opened up her box and stared for a moment, “Mum he got my favourite”

Opening up her own box Sarah replied, “Mine too” she replied shooting a wink at John.

“Can we keep him?” Kira said with a cheeky smile before moving to hug John, “Thank you for my cake” she said, before adding, “Can we go see that pet movie? My friends at school said it’s good and you can even kiss mum if you like”

“You’re welcome,” John grinned and returned Kira’s hug, resting his head against hers briefly as he looked up at Sarah. “Well thank you Kira, but it’s not me that you have to convince about going to the cinema,” he winked at the little girl when she pulled away and nodded in Sarah’s direction.

Sarah smiled, it was so good to see Kira happy and accepting of John. “Oh I think we can endure a movie, sounds like a nice way to spend a couple of hours. If that's okay with you?” she checked with John, maybe they could go to the park afterwards too. She liked making sure Kira got out and about especially if she hadn't done much that day other than sitting down.

“I think I can make some time in my schedule,” John joked, leaning over to nudge Sarah’s shoulder with his. “But first of all, cake and my best girls telling me how their day has been and what they’ve been up to since I saw them last,” he smiled at them both and started to tuck into his chocolate eclair.

“Glad to hear it” she said with a smile nudging him back. “Well for me it’s been fairly routine” Sarah said before taking a bite out of the millionaire shortbread he’d brought her.

“School is finished so I’ve been at a child minders” Kira told him, “She’s okay, she makes good sandwiches”

“Do you like being at the child minders Kira? Are there other kids there? What sort of things do you do with her?” John asked, his mind starting to form an idea. He had some time free over the summer, he could look after her a few days if Sarah would like that, but if Kira was happy where she was he’d not bring it up.

“It’s okay, sometimes there are other kids there but they do boring stuff like play with dolls. We don’t do much really” she said, smiling as Sarah reached over and ruffled her hair, “I know, next time I’ll find someone better okay? It kind of snuck up on me this time” Sarah said, she was at home some of the time since the services she offered in the schools were on hold until they started back but the services in the community had increased.

“Well uh, I’ve got some free time over the summer,” John shrugged as he looked across at Sarah. “I’m sure we could find some fun things to do, experiments to run and stuff. If you don’t mind, that is?”

“Are you sure?” Sarah said, she didn’t want to take up all of his spare time, “Please mum?” Kira piped up, “It’ll be much more fun to be with John”

“Yeah, of course,” John smiled at her. “It makes sense, doesn’t it? Kira and I can have some fun and it saves you some money. I might not be able to do it all the time, but we can look at my schedule and see what works,” he told her.

“Thanks” Sarah said, “That would be great” and so she leaned in to press a kiss to his lips, even Kira didn’t comment on that. She was just happy she’d get to spend some fun time with John.
