Where: Baxter's
What: A customer comes in with a question
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
She was free! Finally! Sam was so happy that finals were over with and she could just focus on work and Mike and doing a hell of a lot of nothing else. Well, except dealing with the dreams, but whatever. That was small potatoes in comparison to finals for her classes, or at least, she felt that way.
She'd woken up late, later than she had actually intended, but she didn't have anything at all planned for the day. She spent about half of her morning lounging around before finally deciding to shower and dress for the day since she wanted to actually get out of the house and do something for herself. A mani and pedi later, Sam was walking by Baxter's Bakery and decided to stop in to see if they had any vegan options. Walking in, she smiled at the woman behind the counter. "Do you happen to have any vegan options?" She asked, a small smile on her face.
Audrey was the one behind the bar when a customer came up and asked about vegan options. Of course, they’d looked into a lot of options when it came to some of the items, but vegetable shortening and xantham gum could only take a girl so far. She had a few items, though, and they offered different kinds of “milk,” too--soy, almond and coconut.
“I do,” Audrey replied, smiling warmly at the woman on the other side of the counter. “Our coffee is fair trade, and we have soy, almond and coconut milk. When it comes to snacks, though, our options are a little more limited. But we’ve got a fig bar with rolled oats and honey, and we’ve got a gluten-free, vegan shortbread. It’s actually pretty good. I have both chocolate-dipped and plain.” Audrey wouldn’t sell something if it didn’t pass her standards for being delicious.
"Oh good!" Sam replied, a bright smile settling on her features. She knew that not all places offered vegan options, although she always hoped that they did since she liked trying out different places. Sam listened to the options that the woman gave to her, lips pursing in thought as she tried to decide what she might want.
"I think I'll take a coffee, with some almond milk no flavoring." Sam didn't mind a little flavoring sometimes, but today was not one of those days that she wanted any. It was understandable, that they didn't quite have as many options here. She knew it was hard to find good vegan recipes. "And the shortbread with chocolate sounds amazing. So I'll take two of those."
Audrey beamed. She’d had people from all different walks of life come into the shop, and she wanted to be accommodating to them. There were dietary restrictions due to health issues, to morals, to religion, to all sorts of things, and Audrey didn’t judge. She wanted everyone who came into Baxter Bakery to feel welcome and supported.
“Coming right up!” She said, and turned to the pastry case to get the cookies. “I like these, I hope you do, too! They’re obviously a different recipe from a typical shortbread cookie--as there’s no milk or butter. But I think using the alternatives give it a really great flavor. You can taste the sweetness and the bitterness of the dark chocolate.” She passed them over in a little, paper wrapper. “And I’ll pour that coffee. I’m Audrey, by the way. I own the place.”
"Thanks!" Sam replied with a bright smile, and she nodded. "Yeah, for Christmas I baked a bunch of different cookies, some vegan some not, and handed them out as gifts to friends. Most of them seemed to enjoy the vegan ones, although they might've been saying that to be nice." Sam knew that it could be hard to find good vegan food, especially where dairy products were used. There was nothing like the real thing if you were used to it, but Sam had been vegan for seven years now, so she'd grown used to the taste.
Taking the shortbread cookies, Sam looked back over at her with a smile. "Oh! I'm Sam, it's nice to meet you Audrey."
“That’s so wonderful!” Audrey said, then she gave a gasp. “Wait! We should do that this year! This Christmas, we should host a cookie exchange! All our close friends, we can come together and everyone bring a couple dozen cookies… and everyone gets to go home with a variety of our best recipes!” She brightened, sitting up a little. “That’s better than cheap stuff that we’re just gonna donate in six months, anyway.”
She beamed. “It’s my pleasure, really.” She finished up the transaction and gave Sam her change. “I’d love to share recipes. It would be great to have more vegan options in the bakery.”
Sam was about to respond when Audrey gasped. Her eyes widened a bit, and then she laughed softly. "That would be a great idea!" It would be something nice to do for others, and well, Sam did tend to prefer home made gifts as opposed to store bought ones. Well barring the expensive pair of boots her parents had bought her for Christmas this past year.
She had, however, asked specifically for those. "Oh I agree. I like homemade gifts better myself." There was something nice about getting something that you knew people had put a lot of time into. "Sure, I'll get together some of my favorites, and bring them by. It took awhile to find things that worked, but I think I've found several that people liked and that I liked myself."
Audrey was grinning brightly. This was a great idea! She’d thought about hosting baking “classes” at the bakery--a way to bring people in and build community--but this was a perfect opportunity for such a thing. She nodded a couple of times. “I love this plan. Let me get in touch with Izzy over at BB2, and we’ll make it happen!”
"Glad that I could help." Sam replied with a half smile and nod of her head. She truly was glad that she could help a business expand their variety of foods to certain groups. Sam might even bring over a few things that were gluten free for those that had issues with wheat. She was thankful that she wasn't one of those people, although she'd tried a few things because, well, it was worth trying something new in her opinion. "Awesome, I'll be back by with those, and you'll have to let me know what she says."
“I absolutely will.” Audrey said with a smile.
