One of the best things about being married to your best friend was that the mornings were fun. Lazy mornings, anyway. Audrey didn’t have to go to work on Friday mornings anymore, since she had so many college students who wanted the hours. So she and Merlin got their ‘lie-in’ day on Fridays.
No alarms went off, no baby started crying, the morning simply came. It washed over Audrey slowly, bringing consciousness with it. She rolled, stretching her arms up over her head, and pressed her body up against her husband. After a seriously long and deep stretch, Audrey’s arm came to wrap around Merlin’s middle. She pressed her face into his neck. “Morning.”
Friday’s, as far as Merlin was concerned, was the best day ever. He loved snuggling up with Audrey in the morning and just simply enjoying being together. Lying there and knowing there was nothing that needed doing was pretty good.
“Morning love” he said, pressing a kiss to her hair as he held her close, “I love how Ben loves Friday lay in’s too. I wonder if our little girl will too” he said, rubbing a hand over Audrey’s belly.
“I bet she will. It's a family tradition, after all.” Audrey closed her eyes and felt sleep tugging at her again, but she resisted. “We should probably figure out what to call her. At least for now? I don't like using the word Peanut, though.”
“True” Merlin agreed with a grin, sliding down a little he spoke to her bump, “What do you think? Princess? Little bit? Bump?” he looked up at Audrey, “We need to think long term too” he said since they hadn’t had the name discussion since finding out she was a she.
Audrey thought the baby moved when he said Little Bit, but she wasn't sure. “We haven't talked names. That's funny. I think it was one of the first things we did for Ben, isn't it?” Audrey had pregnancy brain, and her memory was off. But she didn't really care. She pressed a kiss to Merlin’s lips. “Do you have any ideas?”
Merlin nodded, “I think it was, you’re right” he said with a smile, “No ideas really. Maybe something like Ben’s, traditional but still casual enough for a kid to grow up with”
“We have to pick something that’ll go with Ben. We’re probably going to be screaming both names out a hundred million times.” Audrey grinned, leaning in. She pressed a kiss against his mouth. “Barbara? Or are we staying away from B names?”
Merlin laughed, “Are you suggesting our children won’t always listen the first time?” he teased before scrunching his nose up, “Barb? Too traditional I think, maybe a different letter would be good”
“Well, we can start with the beginning of the alphabet. Maybe… Annalise? Anna. Amy?” Audrey suggested the names, each time pecking a kiss against her husband’s face. “Maybe not an A name. Maybe Candice? Dana. Ellen? Florence? Georgia...”
As she did so Merlin couldn’t help grinning, “Georgia is nice” he said, “Hannah? Heather?” he added some suggestions of his own, stealing a kiss to her lips with each one.
Audrey couldn’t think of any names she liked that started with I that weren’t already taken by someone close to her, so she simply leaned in and kissed her husband hungrily. Hey, it was morning. She was feeling awake, warm and safe, and talking about names was making her feel incredibly loved. Her arms wrapped around him and pulled him close against her. It was nice to be close, even with the baby bump between them.
Merlin wasn’t about to argue if his wife would rather kiss him than discuss baby names, so his own arms came to wrap around her and hold her close. He grinned into the kiss when the baby kicked between them, “I hope that’s approval little bit” he said, moving a hand to stroke over her stomach.
Audrey grinned, her lips against his. “Probably. I think the baby likes you.” She kissed him again. “I like you, too.” Her hand came up to cup the side of his face as she kissed him, drawing him in against her. The other hand moved down over his hip, caressing his skin.
“I should hope you both do since I got you both into this situation” Merlin teased her before kissing her back and letting his own hands stroke over her skin too. Being married to his best friend was pretty damn amazing sometimes and Merlin was incredibly grateful that the powers that be had brought them together.
“I think I’ll have to take part of that blame,” Audrey teased right back. She brought her hand back up and threaded her fingers in his hair. “Hey, it’s something we do really well, I must say. Making babies. Both the practice and the actual… y’know… making.” She gave a little chuckle, then kissed him again. Hungrily this time.
“Okay, you can take half the credit for it” Merlin chuckled, “We do seem to have a knack for it” he agreed returning the kiss and pulling her close up against him.
“We should get a little more practice in,” Audrey whispered, nibbling her lips against his. “Both because it’s good in case we want a number three, and…” She gently squeezed his lower lip with her teeth. “And because it’s fun.”
“It's always fun” he grinned kissing her once more and letting one hand slip down to cup her ass while the other said into her hair, the bump between them cosy as they kissed.
There was no more talking. At least, not from Audrey. Both her arms wrapped around him, kissing him hungrily. Fingers threaded in his hair. One hand slipped down between them, feeling his chest and stomach on the way down.
Words definitely weren’t needed anymore as they moved together, kissing, touching and enjoying their time together.
