It was about time they’d gotten around to doing this. Every time they’d promised to meet up with Setsuna, something had come up, or the universe tried to explode, or something else ridiculous had tried to happen.
Now that all three of them seemed to have such mysterious items, it seemed only logical for them to meet up. There was just no escaping it this time... hell, even if something randomly invaded, they’d probably end up fighting it together, thanks to the weird powers they’d started developing.
Haruka idly span the Space Sword around her fingers, still slightly in awe of how well it fit to her hand, and how effortlessly it moved. It barely weighed a thing. “Has that mirror started doing anything yet, Michiru? I’m curious...”
“It... It actually has” She sighed and set it down, glass to the table. “And I really don’t like it. I see glimpses of things. I don’t see it fully, and it disappears, but I see wrong doings.” She’s yet to learn the ability to focus it to only show foreign energies, but she doesn’t know she should know it yet.
She ran her hand over the symbol on the back, curiously looking at it. “When is she supposed to get here?” She meeped when suddenly a mama kitty pushed her butt in her face. “Dammit cat...”Pushed her off. Someone is irritable.
“She’s not due for another few minutes... and she’s pretty good at arriving on time,” really, whatever these things were, they were kind of fascinating. Even if the bruise the sword had left hadn’t really gone away for a while. “Maybe we should put the cats somewhere so they can’t interfere.”
Haruka might not’ve known much about the Talismans, but there was definitely a feeling that bringing them together would cause... something. Maybe it was linked to that recurring dream about silence coming?
“I don’t have the energy...” She wasn’t lying. She’d been kept up, every night for the past week. Her eyes seem darker around, and she hasn’t been for much of anything. She went so far as putting her head on the cat after forcing her onto her side, and let out a whimper.
She hated this, all of it. Every five minutes, a flash of a nightmare, and she’s up. “Fuck, I’m so goddamn tired. Whatever the fuck is wrong with whatever the fuck. Urgh!” Buried her face in cat fur and just groaned.
Haruka arched an eyebrow, setting the sword aside. “When I figure that out, I’ll let you know... the dreams seem to be getting worse, somehow.” They hadn’t had exactly the same ones, but the ones they’d shared had been terrible enough. “I just keep hearing the same phrases over and over... Messiah, Silence, Talismans, things like that.”
All words with multiple meanings, unfortunately. Posting about them on the network just seemed to attract people who thought they were religious crazies, when that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“I’ve only gotten dreams of weird things. One, attempting to fight a blonde woman, ending in you hurling at me. Another, you being a doofus and referring to fish. And then just about this mirror and my powers. “ she groaned and pulled at her hair. “What I keep getting is flashes of actual events on the planet, involving real people that I don’t KNOW! AND IT’S EVERY GODDAMN FIVE MINUTES APART AND I CAN NEVER FUCKING GET TO SLEEP!”
Yes, she’s yelling. She has every right to be cranky. A week of little to no sleep leads anyone to going a little batshit crazy.
Okay, Michiru yelling would never cease to terrify her a little. It seemed almost like a miracle when there was a light tap on the door, soon followed by Setsuna entering the flat with coffee. “You two had better be decent, or you’re not getting any of this.”
It was almost like she’d sensed her fellow soldiers’ plight on the way there. Maybe starting to awaken as the Soldier of Revolution had its perks.
“Get any of what?” Wasn’t daring to look up at all because ugh, light. She kept getting dizzy. “We’re decent, haven’t had the energy to be anything close to intimate. In fact, seems jerk-off here has been avoiding me...” Groaned again. “Not that I really blame him...”
“Hey!” Haruka managed a fairly manly pout. She wasn’t a jerk-off, dammit. Or a doofus. Or, really, half the things that Michiru called her. “I’d say ‘be nice’, but that tends to backfire...”
Setsuna could only arch an eyebrow. So much for destiny. “Coffee. I sensed something wasn’t quite right.”
“Give. Now. Before I kill something or someone.” Flashed her eyes to Haruka. As soon as she did, she swooned and slumped back into the chair, holding her eyes. “I don’t like this...” She dropped her head forward onto the table. It didn’t last long before the mirror glowed and she had to pick it up.
Once it flashed again she threw it. Instead of falling, it just shot right back at her, hitting her square across the face.
God, that thing was a bastard. Haruka was quick to come to her side, ignoring the sword’s own slight glow. Michiru came first. “I don’t think we’re meant to throw them, you know. Probably indestructible somehow.”
It wasn’t something that Setsuna could exactly confirm nor deny, but she could definitely hand over the coffee. Anything that led to a less cranky Michiru was definitely a good thing.
If it weren’t for the fact that the coffee wasn’t insanely hot, she would have chugged it down in seconds. She’ll have to just sip on it quietly. “You guys are lucky...” She groaned and ran a hand through her hair. At Haruka having shown her the attention, she smiled. “Thank you, love.... Forgive my rude outbursts.”
It wasn’t like Haruka hadn’t shown her any attention recently. It was just that she tended to err on the side of caution when Michiru seemed in the mood to break things - even though she wasn’t strictly male, being kicked in the crotch still hurt, dammit. “I think I can deal with it. The seas are allowed their odd moments of rage, right?”
Oh, that was cheesy. So cheesy, in fact, that Setsuna almost whacked her over the head for it. “Don’t get carried away with that. Please.”
“Just like the sky can never be tamed or told where to go properly.” Smirked at her, pulling her down for a gentle kiss that she may be getting too into. So much in fact that she forgot Setsuna was even there, so she deepened the kiss, tangling a hand in her hair.
Was it just their ‘thing’ to completely forget she was there? Setsuna rolled her eyes, shaking her head. “I’m still here, Michiru-san...”
Despite how nice it felt, Haruka forced herself to pull away, not wanting to get too into the kiss. That was just a slippery slope to disaster, honestly. “We can do that later. Promise.”
“You better live up to that promise, it has been a week after all.” She turned to Setsuna. “Spoilsport. Why don’t next time we see you with.... Good god, why her? Seriously?” Pushed her lips together. “Did you just pick a random girl from town?”
Like Setsuna was the type to do something like that. “I needed some business suits making, she was the first person I thought of. It’s not my fault that one thing led to another.”
“I did warn you she gets pretty hands-on.” To that day, Haruka was still surprised that Rarity hadn’t figured her out. Maybe she passed really well even by those standards...
“So, how much do you like her?” Took another sip of her coffee, leaning in. She’s rather interested after all. “I seriously never pegged you to actually being... Well, sexual. I always thought you were celibate.” Shrugged her shoulders. “Good to know I was wrong, you won’t have your panties in a bunch all the time now that she’s with you.”
Setsuna’s eye twitched, the Time Key appearing in her hands. “Say that again, and I swear to the gods I’ll make you regret it.”
Michiru arched an eyebrow. “Would you rather I comment on the fact that I know she groped Haruka? A lot.” She’s going to ignore saying she got insanely jealous of it and ran off crying when she caught her doing it. “Is she good in bed?” Gave an evil smirk.
That was quickly stepping into personal territory. Setsuna wasn’t even going to dignify that with a proper answer. “I don’t ask you about your sex life, you shouldn’t really ask me about mine. Common courtesy.”
“I think that’s just because ours would confuse you to no end.” Haruka shrugged, leaning to take hold of the Space Sword again. Hey, it felt nice to hold! “The man who isn’t a man and his girlfriend... the tabloids would have a field day, honestly.”
Michiru sneered at her, rolling her eyes. This was not fun, she wanted to go to bed, wanted to sleep for a week. Yet every five minutes... she held up the mirror. “So, what the hell are these things? Would rather figure out so you can leave.” They obviously weren’t getting along well enough right now. “Don’t even see how we’re such close friends in the dreams. Too full of yourself. “
This is the sleep deprivation talking, Haruka should know that much to explain to Setsuna. Sure, Michiru had her bad mood days, but never like this. Losing sleep could make the nicest person a royal asshole. She was no exception.
Haruka was quick to cut in when the Time Guardian looked like she was about to deck Michiru with that key. “I’m really sorry about her. She’s... more sensitive to the nightmares. I think part of it’s to do with the mirror.”
Setsuna nodded and lowered the key. “There’s a myth back home about items like these. There’s a shinto shrine on one of the islands in Tokyo, and its enshrined deity is Susanoo, brother of Amaterasu, and the first wielder of three ‘treasures’ - a sword, a mirror, and a jewel. They’re known as Shiki, and they’re one of the symbols of the emperor.”
It was like a little lightbulb went on in Haruka’s mind. “I’ve heard of those! They can’t be linked to these, right? I mean... nobody gets to see the Shiki, except the emperor and a couple of priests...”
Setsuna could only shrug. “These are, arguably, from another universe. They probably hold more power than any old myth.”
“My grandfather told a story like that once... I was just a little girl at the time.” Took another sip before resting her head on her arms. “Said something about being able to see when things went wrong in the world, when things weren’t right.” She yawned. “I figure he made up parts, mostly the one where he said my eyes should be the mirror, because they were so clear and bright.”
She shrugged. “I always knew he was just flattering me. So that has nothing to do with this, forgive my tangent.”
“These things might’ve always been part of us. It’s not so great a tangent.” It wasn’t likely that the dreams had suddenly made them manifest. That just didn’t make any logical sense, even by the somewhat dubious standards of people who fought crime in miniskirts with magical powers.
God, that sounded weirder than practically anything else in the goddamn state. “They seem to call to each other, in a way. Less than a week after you returned with yours, mine decided to appear...” honestly, it was mysterious. Setsuna wouldn’t even attempt to deny that. “Maybe they’re meant to be brought together...”
“It’s possible, I mean... I found mine at the bottom of part of the ocean floor. And my powers seem to stem from the ocean... and. “Let out a snicker. “Haruka’s powers resemble the sky and the sword fell on her head.” Okay, laughing even more now.
“Hey! You promised not to tell anyone!” Haruka might well’ve been pouting. At least it was a somewhat manly one, in her opinion. “It really hurt, you know...”
Setsuna rolled her eyes. “Have you ever thought that your boyfriend complains too much?”
“It’s more contemplated on the uses of either a gag or duct tape.” She rolled her eyes. “Setsuna isn’t named ‘anyone’, I promise not to tell someone by the name anyone, about it.” Stuck her tongue out at her and winked.
Haruka groaned and facepalmed, shaking her head. “Okay, next time, I’m being more specific... should’ve known you wouldn’t listen.”
Oh, the stories Setsuna could tell them. She might’ve only had a few dreams, but she’d certainly had enough involving their escapades. “Don’t gag anyone whilst I’m still here. Could go downhill a little too fast.”
“I only listen when you manage to collar me.” Winked again before laughing Setsuna’s direction. “You say this as if it already hasn’t gone downhill.” Took another sip of her coffee and set it down. “Let’s get back to what we planned on doing today, alright?’
Haruka coughed, trying to disguise the sudden blush, and Setsuna tried her hardest to pretend that she hadn’t heard that. Why was it that these two seemed to revel in being inappropriate at the worst of times?
“Right. These things,” Haruka lifted the sword, the sheathed blade glowing just slightly. “Maybe if we put them near each other, something’ll happen? Considering they’re calling out to each other.”
Or, at least, it seemed like they were. The sword was glowing a little brighter than it usually did.
“Probably.” The mirror was already glowing more than she’d ever seen it glow. She lifted it up in the same manner Haruka had. “Shouldn’t do any harm, right?”
“We’re guardians. I doubt they’d entrust us with anything that’d cause terrible damage...” Setsuna did love being the voice of reason, sometimes. She raised the key, the orb on the end glowing brighter the closer she brought it to the other two.
“Might have to brace ourselves for this...” Haruka was almost scared to look, considering how powerful these things sometimes seemed in their dreams.
The closer she put the mirror towards the others, the brighter it glowed. She bit her lip, shocked when her forehead began to glow with the symbol for Neptune. Her eyes went wide, focusing solely on the three moving slowly closer.
At around the same time Michiru’s symbol appeared, the symbols for Uranus and Pluto appeared on Haruka and Setsuna’s foreheads. The moment the three items touched, there was a blinding surge of white light, an outward surge of massive energy.
When Haruka opened her eyes again, having shut them to avoid blinding herself, she quickly realised she was in the goddamn sailor uniform. Not that she was the only one, but... her attention was quickly drawn away by the chalice floating above their joined Talismans.
“What the hell...?”
Michiru tipped her head, staring at it. “I’ve... I’ve drawn that before. It was also in the hands of a faceless woman in white with blond hair. She never had a distinct hairstyle but... I’ve always drawn it.” She looked to Setsuna. “You’re the smart one, what do you think it is?”
For once, Setsuna was stumped. It was certainly something intensely powerful, if the fact that it’d made them transform was anything to go by. “A source of power of some kind. Perhaps something else that comes from a myth...”
There was a short pause before Haruka spoke up again. “That light... feels like the light that girl gives off in my dreams. Like the moonlight.”
“It’s the same energy the woman we fight against at one point gives off... And then she just... I forget some of it. But we end up bowing before her.” She looked to Setsuna. “And in the dreams, I feel like she’s something very important to us.”
“There’s always that one person we’re destined to protect.” Even from the few dreams she’d had, Setsuna knew that. It wasn’t all about being the lone guardian and the final taboo. “Maybe it’s linked to her. Maybe they’re the same person. Who knows.”
It wasn’t like they’d be able to find out here. It seemed incredibly unlikely that more people who shared their dreams would turn up... but hey, she’d been wrong before.
“Well... I’m not going to touch it. You touch it Setsuna. You’re the one used to touching unusual peop- er I mean things!” Way to ruin the moment, but oh well. She’s still sleepy and cranky.
Setsuna arched an eyebrow and pulled the Time Key away. The chalice’s glow didn’t dim in the slightest, the air around it shimmering. It was probably still pulling energy through the other two Talismans, she reasoned.
“I’m not sure we’re meant to touch it. It feels... almost as if it’s going against some cardinal rule of the universe.” Maybe that was just the Soldier of Revolution being a little bit too cautious, but you could hardly blame her. “All three of us must share the duty of guarding it... at least until the person who’s meant to hold it shows herself.”
“I vote you get it!” Pulled her own Talisman away, forcing it to disappear and somehow the sudden images every five minutes stopped happening. This meant her becoming increasingly tired despite the caffeine.
“I think she has enough weird things in her apartment...” honestly, Haruka was glad to see the thing go. It kept reminding her of that damned dream in the cathedral, and their deaths, and all manner of unpleasant things. “Maybe the more powerful we get, the longer it’ll last.”
“You’d think so.” Setsuna could only assume that what they were now was only a fraction of their proper power levels. Considering Haruka had blown up a car that one time, that was a slightly frightening thought. “I just hope that didn’t draw too much attention.”
It would be the last thing the three of them needed. Even without knowing what it was, it was clear that it was a source of massive power. It’d be dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands.
