Who: Kate and Heather When: Early May Where: DMV What: A Random Run In Rating/Warnings: Low/Possible cursing at the DMV folks on Heather's part Status: Complete!
There were few things that Heather hated more than standing in line at the DMV. One was definitely the dreams she was having, but it didn't do her any good to dwell on them. There wasn't anything that she could do to change them, and well, she was certain that in the end things would work out.
Or she'd be dead. Either way, she just wanted them to stop soon.
She'd damaged her driver's license while carrying it around in her back pocket. It'd cracked completely down the middle, and while Heather could've taped it together, she figured it would cause her less questions if she was pulled over if she just got a new one. So there she stood, waiting in line, foot tapping on the floor and she knew better than to think that it would be a quick run.
Things were never that easy at the DMV.
Kate hated to sit still. It was one of those things that killed her about amusement parks, banks, the DMV… all that. She hated being in one place for any stretch of time. She was like a shark--if she stopped moving, she’d die. At least, that’s how it felt sometimes.
But the DMV was a necessary evil. Kate had to get her license updated, or something, so she was in there waiting. And waiting. And waiting. All the waiting and the standing still was making her go absolutely bonkers, especially because she didn’t bring anything to do. No book, no ipod, and her phone had just run out of batteries. The screen went black as she was in the middle of an email to Clint. God Damnit.
So she was seething, her knee bouncing, as she stood in line. “God, hurry it up already,” she sighed under her breath.
"They're never in any hurry here." Heather replied with a sigh, and shake of her head. It was rather unfortunate that they weren't in any hurry either. Heather had things that she needed to do, and well, she actually rather do anything than stand in line here.
Pursing her lips slightly, Heather shifted to look toward the front of the line and then sighed as it appeared the woman up there was arguing with the worker behind the counter. Figured. The other lines weren't any better to be honest, they were moving just as slowly as the one they were standing in.
“Jesus.” Kate said, having seen the same thing. “You don’t argue with the lady at the DMV. It’s not her fault that the system sucks. She can’t do anything about it.” Kate lifted both hands to take off her sunglasses, then ran her fingers through her hair and put the sunglasses back on as if they were a headband.
“It’s futile.” Kate was grumbling to herself more than anything else, wishing that stupid people would just GTFO and she could be in the front of the line.
Heather shook her head, and let out a long breath. "Right?" People, however, were dicks most of the time in public. Heather often wondered if they actually saw customer service types as people. Sometimes she didn't think that they really did.
"People, however, love being dicks for the sake of being dicks. And then they think that everything should just be handed to them as quickly as possible." Heather lifted a shoulder and then shook her head again. Regardless of how much she wanted to get out of there she wasn't going to be rude just to be rude.
“God, I wish it wasn’t true, but it is.” Kate said, shaking her head a little. She turned to look over at the other woman--the one who seemed to agree with her so well on DMV etiquette. All Kate needed was to update her address, and now she was stuck in the line that wouldn’t end.
“Though, I have to admit that sometimes I’m the ass.” She added, breaking into a little smirk. “Just not to DMV employees. Because that’s a whole different level of jerkface. Clogging up all the works and making everyone late? Talk about inconsiderate.”
Heather chuckled softly with a nod, "Me too. What can you do though?" Heather knew better than to rush people, most of the time they were doing things as quickly as their systems would allow them. Heather shifted on her feet, switching the documents she'd brought with her to her other hand.
"I think that we all can be depending on the circumstances." She wasn't a picture perfect customer either, and she could admit to that. "It is. Hopefully they'll get their shit sorted out so the rest of us can get about our day." Of course, Heather didn't see the end of that argument stopping any time soon, so it was possible that they'd be shifted to another line. "I'm Heather, by the way." She stuck out her free hand with a smile.
“There’s nothing we can do except give the woman dirty looks as she walks by,” Kate said, all too amused by that idea. Actually, she couldn’t wait to give the woman dirty looks. There wasn’t much else she could do at that point. She’d already waited in the damn line, and it wasn’t like she was going to start a fistfight at the DMV. At least, not with a woman for being rude.
“Kate,” Kate said, turning to give the woman a smile and a handshake. “I hope you cleared a whole afternoon for DMV Business. Seems like we’re gonna be here for a while.”
"Bitch face is a go." Heather replied with a slight nod all for giving this woman a bitch face as she walked past them. Heather was actually pretty sure that everyone in line would be giving her that look too, since they all appeared to glaring at the woman with contempt. Heather couldn't blame them, honestly, she was getting irritated herself.
She gave Kate's hand a firm shake, with a small nod of her head. "Seems like, and I really didn't have much planned. However, I really didn't want to spend my entire evening here, you know?" She laughed softly and shook her head.
Kate chuckled at the phrase ‘bitch face’ because it was so appropriate. When the woman walked by, she would get NO LOVE from the line. None. Especially not from Kate and her new friend.
“Oh, I know,” Kate said, smirking. “I don’t have anywhere to be, but that doesn’t mean I’d want to stay here.” She glanced around, then down at her phone. “I don’t know if I’ve got enough battery for this. And I’m gonna get hungry. And thirsty.” She couldn’t help but chuckle at herself. “I sound like I’m four.”
"I can completely understand that." Heather replied with a nod, arms folding over her chest as she let out a long breath after she spoke. With a light laugh, Heather glanced over at her new found companion, "It's fine. I think we all have a tendency to revert to a younger age when we get hungry and thirsty." At least, she got real cranky when she hadn't had anything to eat or drink in a while.
There'd been times the girls up front had brought her back a sandwich from their little selection of deli products and placed it on the desk in the back. She took that as a sign that it was time for her to take a break. Sometimes Heather did forget to take care of herself, and it was nice that the girls cared enough about her to help her out. "Ah," the woman up front finally stopped arguing with the clerk, "looks like the drama is over with." Heather did, in fact scowl as the woman passed them and then snorted as she glanced down and away from all of the other angry eyes. "Some people."
