Who: Elsa of Arendelle and Kate Bishop
When: May (post Storm Trooper Plot)
Where: Archery School
What: Elsa’s looking for classes
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Ever since the stormtrooper incident Elsa had been thinking about different ways she could use her power in a defensive manner. After all she couldn’t always rely on the person she was up against being susceptible to the cold or unable to keep their balance on an icy surface. It hadn’t been until someone on the network had mentioned arrows that she had looked into it.
If she managed to use a normal one then perhaps she could create one of ice and use it that way. It was worth a go. Pushing open the door she smiled at the receptionist as she made her way to the desk.
Kate was sitting behind the receptionist’s table. The place was a little run down, but it was the best damn archery school in all of Orange County. The reviews brought in new customers, and the skill level of the instructors kept them around.
When a woman with white blonde hair came in, Kate’s thoughts instantly went to Emma Frost--but then she realized it was someone else. A little younger, and much kinder. (This young woman was smiling, even.) So Kate smiled, too. A little relieved and definitely friendly.
“Welcome to the Archery School. How can I help you?”
“Hi” Elsa said, “I’m looking into archery lessons and, well, google suggested this place” she admitted, “I’m a complete beginner so I don’t know if that would be a problem or anything”
“Oh, that’s not a problem,” Kate said, giving a little smile. “We have people of all ages coming in to learn how to use a bow and arrow. Here, let me give you an interest form to fill out, then I can give you a tour of the facility?” She pulled a clipboard out and passed it over the counter to the other woman.
Elsa’s smile brightened, “Thank you so much” she said taking the clipboard and moving to sit and fill in her details. When she was done she stood and handed it in, “Here you go”
“Thank you, Ms…” Kate glanced down at the form to read the woman’s name. “Arendelle. We’ve got a lot of beginner’s classes here, and there’s the option of private lessons, too. Here’s our schedule,” she passed over a paper with the calendar on it. “Do you want to take a tour of the facility?”
“Oh thank you, that’s great” Elsa said with a smile as she took the details, “If that would be okay?” she nodded, seeing the place and getting a feel for it would be good.
“Of course.” Kate said. She put the paperwork away, locking it carefully into the filing cabinet. “The guy who owns this place doesn’t really trust computers? I’m trying to bring him into the twentieth century, but it’s been a struggle. It’s a good place, though.” She grabbed the keys and motioned for Elsa to follow.
“Okay, tour. We’ve got locker rooms over here, men’s on the left, women’s on the right.” The hallway was recently renovated, with what looked like fresh paint and carpet. “And there’s the storage closet. And through here…” A short hallway later and they were in a large room the size of a gymnasium. “This is where most of the lessons take place. We’ve also got an outdoor range in the back.”
“I think there’s something to be said for paper systems but I don’t think I could do without my computer” Elsa admitted with a smile as she followed the younger girl.
“It’s a nice large area, much bigger than it looks on the internet. I have to admit the website almost put me off, I take it that is part of the not trusting computers?” she asked with a smile, she was glad she’d come to see it.
“I can’t imagine living without my smart phone. My boss? He doesn’t even have a flip phone. I swear the guy is living in the stone age.” Kate teased, giving the other young woman a bright smile. “I put the website together myself, and I’m not that great with all that… stuff. I mean, Instagram I can do, but building a website with html and css and all that? I should probably take a class.” She mused aloud.
“You want to see the outside?” Kate asked, and motioned toward the door. “All our students are welcome to come and practice when we don’t have classes in session.”
“Oh I’m sorry I didn’t mean any offence, I’ve seen a lot worse ones I promise” Elsa said looking a little worried she may have insulted the girl with her comments.
“Thank you” Elsa nodded, “That sounds nice. That’s the sort of thing I’d like I think, less pressure than a class maybe. Once I know the basics I mean”
“No, it’s okay. I know the website isn’t great. And some of the pictures are old and stuff.” Kate said, shrugging. She wasn’t offended. Maybe it was time to hire someone to do something like that for them. Make a professional website. But eh. Kate wasn’t really in charge of that stuff, and couldn’t convince the old guy who owned the place how important an internet presence and social media was.
“Sure. I’m often around during the day, too,” Kate said, turning to lead the way to the range outside. “You could take a group class or some private lessons. Once you’ve taken a couple and we’ve gone over the safety features, you’re welcome to come whenever and use the facility.”
“That sounds wonderful. I'm looking forward to learning a new skill. So do you teach here yourself?” she asked, perhaps she had wrongly assumed that Kate was the receptionist.
“Oh, yeah.” Kate said, nodding. “The old man’s got me on the front desk whenever I’m on the clock but not actually teaching anything. I think it’s how he goes without hiring a receptionist.” Kate grinned. “Do you have any experience with archery? Or is this your first time with any of it?”
“I see, well I guess it makes good business sense” From a certain point of view anyway. “Well, please don’t think I’m crazy but I have an ability and it was suggested that this could work well for me”
Kate paused, turning to look at the other woman. “An ability?” She asked. Of course, she knew about all kinds of crazy stuff in Orange County. It would just be a funny coincidence if this woman was like those others. “What kind of ability?”
Looking around to make sure nobody would see Elsa held out her hand and created a small flurry of snow which turned into one large sparkling snowflake, “That kind” she said softly.
Kate’s eyes went a little wide. She hadn’t seen many outward displays of magic in this world, and it always caught her by surprise. She stepped a little closer, breaking into a bright grin at the sight of the snowflake. “That’s amazing!” She nearly laughed. But then… “How do you think archery will help with this ability?”
Elsa smiled when she realised Kate was more fascinated than scared, that had been her hope in the dreams but it hadn’t been that way. Her parents had taught her to hide it because people would fear her. Here it was different. “Well I was hoping once I was good enough that I could maybe create an ice bow and arrows” she admitted.
“Holy shit, you can do that?” Kate asked, eyes wide and grinning over at the other young woman. “That’s amazing! Of course. I’ll help you in any way that I can. Classes? I’ll give you a hefty discount if you promise to make me an ice bow.”
“I can, I can make rather intricate things” Elsa said before she smiled, “No need for a discount I would happily make you an ice bow” she added, “Thank you so much for your help” She truly appreciated it.
“Anytime. Seriously. Let’s head back to the front and schedule you some classes.” Kate said, and turned to head back inside. The place was mostly deserted, as it was a lot of the time, but that didn’t matter to Kate. She was thinking about ice bows and ice arrows. Things that would do damage but melt before they could be recovered? Talk about awesome!
