Summer was officially here, and had been for ten days to be fair. But that didn’t mean much to Hanna. While she had already been planning to meet up with Caleb once he had gotten off work that day, at her internship? She’d just learned that something she considered to be a pipe dream and wouldn’t happen was, well, suddenly able to happen. When she’d applied to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, she didn’t expect to get in. Then she did. But the issue of housing and things like that had been a problem so she had figured she wouldn’t be able to attend. Then the woman she interned for had said she had a niece who lived in New York and was in search of a roommate and that she had mentioned Hanna and now….
Now dreams could feasibly become reality in a non Orange County sort of way and Hanna suddenly wasn’t sure what to do. She had a life here, even if she really would be fine with the dreams stopping. Being framed for Mona’s murder and sent to prison with Ali? Yeah. That was annoying. Typical dreams though.
Still the sudden reality that she could go to New York, get away from the crazy? It was a lot. But something she needed to talk over, not just with her mother (because screw her father, it wasn’t like he cared or would help), but Caleb as well as her other friends. So even though it wasn’t what she had thought would come up during their hanging out, well… now it had to. She had all the information in her bag, just to be certain. But right now? She had to wait (more anxious than she would have thought) outside of Stark Tower until Caleb got off work.
Original Caleb walked out of a very tall building filled with strange machines and people dressed in odd clothing. His hair was slicked down, dressed in a grey suit and brown tie. The last thing he remembered there was a World War going on and he was part of some pact to protect the town. Along with Miranda. And now he was in some strange place.
As he exited the building he walked up to the first person he saw. A blonde who seemed to be waiting for someone. He wasn’t sure why he was drawn to her when there were so many people in this strange new place but there was just something about her. “Excuse me,” he said to the woman. “Do you know where Ravenswood is?”
The second she noticed Caleb, Hanna quirked a brow because what was up with the Edwardian look. “Did you lose a bet to Tony or some--” And then he was asking about Ravenswood. What. The. Hell?? “Haha, very funny, Caleb.” Okay, so she had no idea why Caleb would be joking around about Ravenswood, he never talked about it. In fact beyond the random ghost issue, she was pretty sure he would sooner just forget it. Which meant there was no reason he would make a joke about it.
Especially dressed in Edwardian fashion.
So now what did she do?! It wasn’t like Ravenswood actually existed here. And even if it did? Well, this was California. Which was on the complete other side of the country.
Who was Tony? And how did this girl know his name? His eyes brown knitted together in confusion. “I’m sorry,” Original Caleb replied giving her an apologetic smile. “How do we know each other?” And she still didn’t answer his question about Ravenswood. If she knew who he was how come she didn’t know where she was from? He scratched the back of his head clearly disorientated. He just wanted to go home, back to Miranda.
If she hadn’t already decided that this wasn’t her Caleb, well… the confusion he showed at her would definitely confuse her. He wasn’t that good an actor really. So the fact he really and truly didn’t know her? Yeah. This was apparently the Caleb from Ravenswood. Who was sacrificed for a curse. Or pact or...whatever. Either way, she had no idea what to do.
“Sort of… Or, I know of you. I kn--ow Miranda and she told me about you…” Yeah that wasn’t awkward at all. But there was still the part of Hanna that would want to help someone, take in her strays as had been the joke. “I’m not really sure how you got here, but you’re in California right now….” At least that would give him an idea. While she tried to figure out what the hell to do.
Hell yeah. Work was done for the dat. Time to see Hanna, his favorite part of any day. The selfish part of him was glad she was done with school for a bit since it meant more time together. Shutting down his work computer he grabbed his things and left the building for the day. Once outside he spotted his girlfriend right away. Only who was she talking to? The guy’s clothes looked a little out of place. When he got closer he froze, it was him. Well not him. It was Original Caleb from Ravenswood. He recognized him from the picture on the tombstone.
What the hell?
Caleb froze just staring at the scene.
“California?” There was a frown on Original Caleb’s face. That was a long way from Ravenswood. But the girl had said she knew Miranda. That was at least something. Maybe Miranda was here too? Although how they ended up here was still lost on him. “How do you know Miranda? Is she here?”
“Yeah, between San Diego and Los Angeles…” Two major cities, that would give a basic idea at least. Not that she could tell him how he got there. Though it seemed that her claim of knowing Miranda helped. Sort of. “Yeah, we met at summer camp, but if she’s here I haven’t seen her…”
Which would be awkward. The ghost she had been convinced Caleb had cheated on her with in the dreams because that was what he made her believe to keep her ‘safe’. But she had felt horrible upon learning the girl was dead.
Did they have summer camps in the 1910s? Well. Too late now.
Snapping out of it Caleb slowly made his way toward this other him and his girlfriend. They were talking about Miranda and summer camp it sounded like. Caleb was kind of used to seeing ghosts now but this was something else. It was probably the most surreal experience of his life.
“Uh, hello,” he said to Original Caleb once he got close enough.
Summer camp? What was she even talking about? And then some guy also dressed in strange clothing that looked exactly like him only with shorter hair approached. “Who are you?” Original Caleb asked.
“I’m Caleb,” Caleb replied stepping closer to Hanna. “And this is my girlfriend Hanna, but I’m guessing you already met,” he added wrapping an arm around Hanna protectively. The Original Caleb he had learned about in his dreams about Ravenswood didn’t sound dangerous. But who knew what this thing in front of him was. The last thing he wanted was for Hanna to get hurt.
Okay… so he looked confused about the summer camp comment. Not like she really had any control over that. How was she supposed to say that she knew Miranda’s doppleganger from the dreams, and then she had died? And that he was technically dead. And the year was 2016, not...1917 or whenever it was he was from.
And there was Caleb. Scratch that. Her Caleb. Wow her head hurt with this. Stupid Orange County being stupid.
“That we have.” Because what else was there to say? Yep. Awkward times were awkward. And they were going to have to figure out what to do with past Caleb as well.
Now how to handle this Original Caleb. The poor guy looked so confused. If this was the Original Caleb Rivers from Ravenswood Caleb felt bad for him. He and the Original Miranda were killed so young. Plus he knew how in love they were had their wedding vows to prove it. But maybe if Original Caleb was here Miranda would show up as well. Original Miranda hopefully, he didn’t want to have to deal with modern day Miranda.
“How can we both be Caleb?” Original Caleb asked. He was from too early a time to even consider cloning to be an option. He honestly had no idea how this was happening.
“Uh, it’s sort of a long story,” Caleb replied with a frown. “You know that death pact you and Miranda were part of? Well you guys died,” that was awkward to tell someone. “You’re technically my ancestor,” at least he was in the dreams. Here? Who the fuck knew. “But I don’t know how you got here. If you are Miranda might be around somewhere,” he offered.
Yep. Definitely not something that was going to be easy to explain. God this was awkward, so Hanna just stayed there, quiet for the time being. It was one thing to be told about the death pact and the Original versions of Caleb and Miranda, to see the tombstone. Completely different to be interacting with one of them.
“And we’ll definitely help you out.” Because they would. It was Hanna’s nature at the end of the day, even if she was suspicious. Because this poor guy was from a hundred years earlier than they were, which meant he would have no idea how to survive. It was only right to help.
And if Miranda were around, well… Hanna didn’t know. But she sort of hoped the original Miranda was, just because it sucked being separated from someone you were in love with.
He died? And Miranda? How was that possible? He was most certainly alive and standing right there in front of them. “I don’t believe that is possible. I’m clearly alive.”
Caleb scratched the back of his head with his free hand as he tried to figure out how to explain this mess. “Uh, yeah I’m not sure how you got here.” But Hanna was seeing him too so he had to be alive in some way. He wasn’t a ghost. “This place has a way of doing weird shit like that. Why don’t you come back to my place and I can try and explain better.” Plus there was that gravestone there which might help with the whole believability issue. Good thing he hadn’t gotten rid of it like so many people suggested. “You can stay there for awhile too. However long you need.” It wasn’t like he had any place else to go.
The question of the ages. How did these things happen and what was it about Orange County. But there were no answers, just questions and they had all learned how to deal with it, even while growing frustrated with it. One thing was certain, plans for the day, and who knew how long, were definitely changed.
“I’m sure we’ll figure out the how of it soon.” She hadn’t noticed anything on the network about it. Which meant that whatever was happening? Probably just started. “But yeah, we’ll get you settled, and answer whatever questions we can.” And pray it didn’t last that long.
Original Caleb nodded, the confused expression still on his face. Maybe it was the fact that the guy looked exactly like him but for some reason he trusted this couple. And it really would be better to go somewhere else to try and figure it out. “Thank you,” was all he said still at a bit of a loss for words.
“No problem,” Caleb replied breaking into a bit of a smile. “Come on, we can take my car.”
