Who: Will Herondale and Kate Bishop
When: After Jem goes to the hospital
Where: Will’s place
What: Bringing dinner
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete

When Kate heard that Jem was in the hospital, she jumped into action. She hadn’t seen much of Will lately (though, she was working two jobs, teaching self defense pro bono, and practically living with her boyfriend and his dog, so the girl was a little on the busy side), but that didn’t make him any less of her friend. She picked up some to-go Chinese food, and came over to his house when she knew he’d be home. He might not feel like eating, but at least the option would be there. And a friend to talk to, if he wanted.

She knocked on the door with a big bag of fast food in one arm.

Will hadn’t slept or eaten properly in since Jem had gone into hospital, he was worried and stressed and basically a little bit of a mess. But he had showered and changed which was pretty good going. There hadn’t been much looking after himself lately.

Opening the door he gave his friend a little smile, “Hey” he said moving back so she could come in, “Sorry about the mess, things have been crazy around here”

“Dude, no apologies necessary.” Kate said as she stepped through the doorway. “You should see my boyfriend’s place.” She offered one arm up to hug him, still holding the bag of fast food. “Are you okay?”

Will returned the hug, “I’m...here?” he said with a sigh, “I don’t know everything just feels upside down with Jem ill. Tessa and I are all over the place. How are you?” he asked her.

“I’m fine.” Kate wasn’t worried about anything in her own life. She couldn’t imagine how awful things would be if Clint was ill. Injured, sure, that she could handle. She could even patch him up herself. But in the hospital? She’d be broken. She probably would tell off any nurse or doctor who told her to leave, and would curl up on a chair next to his bed indefinitely. Forget eating or drinking.

That’s why she was here. Coming back to the topic at hand, she held up the big bag of Chinese take-out. “I brought food. Come sit and eat with me.”

Will had gotten so bad that Tessa had insisted he leave for a little while, because he could be charming but sometimes when he was worried or agitated that charm turned to sarcasm and a scathing wit. It probably wouldn’t have been long before the nurses refused to be there when he was.

“I appreciate this Kate” he said honestly, no joking or winking just simple thanks.

“Hey, it’s all good man.” Kate moved to the table and opened the bag to pull everything out. They’d tossed forks in there, so Kate and Will could just eat from the cartons. She didn’t mind it. It wasn’t like using a fork was double-dipping, right?

“Sorry, um…” She said a little sheepishly, “I may have ordered way too much. I hope you guys like leftovers.” This was one of the cheaper places, but the food was good, and you got a lot of it for a little amount of money. “I guess I was hungry when I phoned in the order.”

“It’s perfect” he said, “Thanks. And take away leftovers are always the best. You ever tried cold chow mein on warm buttered toast? One of the best things ever” he told her giving an honest smile.

“Wait, on toast? I mean, leftover Chinese food is the best thing in the world, but I’ve never tried mixing it with fresh ingredients.” Kate grinned a little as she started to unpack the things. She held out a fork to Will, trying not to be too concerned about him. She didn’t want to bring the fact that Jem was ill up, but was there to listen if he needed to talk about it all. “Eat up, man.”

“Try it” Will said with a smile and a knowing nod, “Best thing ever” he encouraged her. “Cheers” he said taking the fork and doing a little salute with it when she ordered him to eat but he did as she instructed.

Kate chuckled softly. “All right, I’ll give it a go.” She nodded once, then picked up her own fork to eat with him. In his worries about Jem, she didn’t dare leave him alone to eat on his own. He might put the stuff in the fridge and forget about it. She knew she would.

“How’s the food?” She asked after eating with him in silence for a moment.

“It’s good actually. I didn’t expect it to taste of much. Kind of expected everything to be turned off until Jem comes home” he admitted in a rare honest and open moment. Will didn’t often share his true feelings. Preferring instead to hide behind jokes.

Kate paused for a moment, letting his words soak in. She appreciated that he was being so candid with her, trusting her to safeguard his feelings in this way. “Well, I’m glad I can be here to help you with this. And hey, this is the best Chinese place in Orange County, so I’m not really surprised it still tastes good.”

Will nodded and gave her a smile, “You're a good friend Kate” he told her, “with great taste in Chinese take out”

Kate chuckled softly. “I do what I can.” She said, teasing, as she smiled over at him. She was glad that she could be there to help. Whenever he needed it, she’d definitely be there.
