Michael was really happy that Alyssa had asked him to come visit the campus with her even though he knew it was probably only because he would be a little more likely to let her go off on her own for a few minutes with some of her friends. Which was exactly what he’d done, heading into a little cafe on the campus to grab a cup of coffee while he waited for her to come back. Or to call him and tell him she was taking off with friends for the rest of the day. He’d be fine either way. He looked around after getting his drink, finally spying a table in the back and making his way to it, sitting down with his back to the door as he started playing a game on his phone, just trying to kill time.

Kurt really needed some coffee. He had woken up late thanks to his cat unplugging the alarm and in order to make sure he got to class on time he had to forgo his daily stop for caffeine. He supposed he could have still gone and just have been late to class. But he was a punctual kind of person and hated being late to anything.
Of course it was crowded but thankfully he had managed to find an empty seat at one of the back tables. Setting his bag on the floor he bent down to get one of his books when he noticed the man playing a game at the table next to him. He was unfamiliar but that didn't mean anything. The school was pretty big. Having seen his roommate play it a lot, the boy couldn't help but comment.
“If you swipe left and diagonally, it kills that thing quicker.”

Michael looked up when he heard someone talking to him, a friendly smile on his face - partly due to his friendly nature and partly due to it being drilled into his head that he needed to be friendly and approachable when he was in public. “I wish I’d met you three days ago. That’s how long I’ve been stuck on this level,” he said. He turned his attention back to his game for a second, following the other man’s advice and finally beating that level.
He put his phone down and turned his attention back to the other guy. “Thanks for the advice. I’m Michael,” he said, holding his hand out to the other man to shake.

Kurt laughed softly as he pulled out one of his text books. With finals coming up he had been focusing all of his free time on studying. He was definitely looking forward to when all this stress and cramming would be over.
Reaching out he took the man's hand and shook it politely. “I'm Kurt” he replied with a smile. “Do you go to school here or just visiting?”

“I brought my best friend’s sister to visit the campus. And then encouraged her to go explore with her friends,” Michael admitted. “She’s not here by herself, technically, and doesn’t have to worry about me looking over her shoulder, scaring off any guys. Everybody’s happy,” he added. He heard his phone’s text alert, and turned back to it after he and Kurt shook hands, checking his messages quickly and responding. “And now she’s off with her friends for the rest of the day.”
He noticed the textbook. “Do you like going to school here? I noticed the textbook and I just want to try to help her make the right decision about college,” he explained. Alyssa was practically his little sister and he wanted her to be happy, to pick the school that was right for her. Even if it wasn’t necessarily the one all of her friends were going to.

“It's a very good school,” he commented sipping his coffee. “I love it here. If she's interested in fashion and wanting to stay close this is a good choice.”
He chuckled a bit at the man's comment about scaring off guys. “You two must be very close if you tend to go into protective scary man mode,” he teased lightly.
***
“I’m not sure whether staying close is more her or me and her brother but all the schools she’s looking at are close so I’m telling myself it’s all three of us,” Michael told him with a small shrug. “She’s pretty into fashion, constantly critiquing me and her brother both for what we wear. I keep expecting to come home and find a pile of my clothes on the landing because she’s decided they have to go.”
“It’s not my fault she keeps getting interested in guys that aren’t good enough for her,” he joked before getting serious. “She’s like my little sister too. I’ll do whatever I can to take care of her. To keep her safe.”
***
“I think it's sweet that she has someone to look after her,” Kurt smiled. Being an only child meant that he didn't really go through an overprotective stage. But still it was cute to see especially when the person wasn't a relative.
At the mention of her critiquing what he wore, Kurt tilted his head slightly as he looked over the outfit Michael was wearing. It certainly wasn't bad. But still it could be better. But that seemed to be the way Kurt's brain was wired even at a young age. “You should let her shop for you.” He grinned. “It can count as a learning experience.”
***
“I try. She deserves somebody looking after her. Keeping her safe,” Michael said quietly. She and Shane hadn’t had it easy back in Texas with their dad. Here or in the dreams. Thinking about what happened to Alyssa in the dreams still hurt him even though he’d dreamt about it months ago. He’d gotten even more protective of her after dreaming about that fire.
He laughed at Kurt’s comment, not taking any offense at it. “I could but...it’s more fun to see her face sometimes when I come out of my room. Apparently as a professional musician I need to ‘think more about my image’ when I’m going to be out in public. At least that’s what she and pretty much everybody at the label keep telling me,” he said with a shrug. He knew that it was important how he looked when he went out but a part of him still wanted his career to be based just on his talent. Not on whether or not his tshirt was for a band that had been popular three years ago but had since faded into obscurity.

Kurt laughed softly at the man's response. It sounded a lot like his dad when he'd tried to give him a makeover. It hadn't ended well, and his dad was back to wearing his favorite flannel shirts a week later. But the fact that his father had been willing to go through it was one of the things he loved.
“A professional musician?” He echoed, his head tilting slightly in interest. “What do you play? Or are you in a band?”

Michael was glad when the conversation shifted from his wardrobe to his music. That was where his true passion lay and it probably showed on his face as he grinned and sat up a little straighter. “I’m a singer mainly but I play both the guitar and the piano. Compromise with my mom for guitar lessons. I write a lot of my own stuff too,” he said, leaning forward slightly without realizing it.
***
“My mom had me learn piano too.” He said with a laugh. “She’s a huge supporter of arts programs and she said growing up that I had to learn at least one instrument. I haven't played in awhile, much to her dismay.”
He could tell Michael loved what he did. The man's eyes seemed to light up at the mention of music, much like his did when it came to clothes. “What genre do you play?”
***
“Sounds like our mom’s would get along. My mom has always been really supportive of the arts and music in general. My career specifically,” Michael said with a grin. “I only really play when I’m writing these days. I always liked my guitar better,” he admitted. “Or when I’m performing certain songs.” He didn’t know what it was but in his opinion the best way to play love songs tended to be on the piano - they just sounded better.
“Mostly rock. A little bit of pop mixed in,” he said, his voice warming up the more he talked.

“You should come to the campus’ coffee shop one Thursday night. There's an open mic night that's even open to the public.” He suggested. He wasn't sure how famous Michael was. Kurt was more into pop and musicals. Something like that may be beneath the blonde across from him. But it couldn't hurt to mention it.
As he reached for his coffee, Kurt caught a glimpse of the time. Shit. He was going to be late. Alicia was going to murder him! Jumping up, Kurt started to hastily shove his books into his bag with an apologetic but frenzied look.
“I'm so sorry, I was supposed to be at study group ten minutes ago!” He explained quickly, knowing he looked like a total spaz. Grabbing a scrap of paper, Kurt scribbled down his phone number and slid it over to Michael. “If your friend has any questions about the school feel free to give me a call!”
***
Michael still preferred the quiet intimate shows like open mic nights to the large concerts so he’d definitely have to check out the campus’ coffee shops. He had Baxter’s on the third Thursday, although he wanted to talk to Audrey about maybe adding another night since she now had two locations. Or playing at one one month, the other the next. Try to expand his audience a little more. “I’ll check it out.” He said with a grin.
He felt a little pang of guilt when Kurt said he was running late for his study group. If they hadn’t gotten caught up in talking maybe he wouldn’t be running late now. “I’ll do that. Or well I’ll have Alyssa do that if she’s got any questions about the school. Thanks.” He gave him a friendly grin as Kurt headed to the door. He stayed there long enough to finish his coffee before heading out himself, making sure to put Kurt’s phone number in his pocket before he left so that he could give it to Alyssa.
