Katou’d been on edge for a couple of weeks already. After someone had set hitmen after Kanan and Katou killed one of them (and scared the piss out of the other two), he’d been waiting for retribution. To wake up one night to find out that there were people in his house intent on killing them both. But he and Kanan had talked. There was a game plan to take out the mastermind in effect, and just knowing that made it easier for Katou to relax and go out and have some fun. Which, in this case, meant picking up Baby on the back of his motorcycle and hitting the beach.
It had been a few months since Katou’s sister had inherited their father’s fortune and bought Katou a new motorcycle because of it. He’d been getting lessons from Kanan, and had tried very hard not to think about the fact that that was the kind of thing a father often taught their son. His own father would have never taught him something like that, even if he hadn’t been dead a year now, and thinking of Kanan as some sort of father figure would no doubt be a mistake.
He still didn’t have his motorcycle license, just his learners, which meant carrying someone else on the back of his bike was definitely illegal. But Katou had never worried much about legalities in the first place. He was wearing his swim trunks under his jeans, and had his towel and other beach things in the small backpack on his back, and he was, he was a little surprised to discover, actually really excited about going to the beach.
The drive to Baby’s didn’t take long, and he stopped his bike outside of her place. Without bothering to turn it off, he honked obnoxiously.
Relaxation was definitely in order for Baby. The dreams were, well they were getting to her a little bit in the grand scheme of things. She'd never thought she'd be a cold blooded killer, and enjoy it as much as she did in her dreams.
That was what bothered Baby the most about them, but it was what it was, and she couldn't control them. All she could do was cope with them, and keep moving on with her life. That meant distractions, and today's distraction came in the form of hanging out with a good friend at the beach.
Baby wore her bikini underneath a pair of jeans and a crop top, her small drawstring bag holding everything else that she'd need for their trip. The windows of her apartment were open, letting in the nice breeze when she heard the honking. Baby stuck her head out the window, and spotted Katou. "Hang on, I'm coming!" She cupped her hands around her mouth as she yelled down. Going toward the door, she slipped on a pair of sneakers, and rushed down the stairs.
Putting her sunglasses on as she exited her apartment building, Baby flashed Katou a grin. "Well look at you, handsome. The whole bike thing definitely works for you."
Katou tossed her his spare helmet and shot her a toothy grin. “Don’t it?” He leaned back in the seat. “I’m pretty sure it makes me about fifty times sexier,” he said winking at her. Then he took a glance at her. “You ain’t looking so shabby yourself. That beach ain’t gonna know what hit it.”
Catching the helmet, Baby took her sunglasses back off so she could slide the helmet on. "Pretty hard to make you any sexier, but I think you're right." She flashed Katou a bright smile and then laughed. "We'll be the two sexiest mother fuckers out there." Putting her sunglasses back on she made a final adjustment to her helmet before settling onto the back seat. "Alright, let's get this party started!"
Katou revved the bike a couple of times, laughing, before taking off. He’d driven with a passenger before - he’d taken Ed out, after all, but it was still different, needing to adjust for their weight and hoping that they didn’t screw things up by leaning the wrong way or too far over.
Didn’t mean Katou was going to slow down none though. What was the point of having a bike if you didn’t go fast and weave through traffic in a way that cars never could? Despite how reckless he seemed to be driving though, he was paying attention to Baby and he’d slow down and take ‘er easy if she asked him to.
Katou's laughter was infectious and Baby found herself laughing as well as they sped off. She held on tightly to his trim waist, a bright smile on her face and a manic look in her eyes as they weaved in and out of traffic. Baby wasn't afraid of death, hell, it came for everyone eventually.
In her dreams she was the predator, and she knew that at any moment that things could drastically change for all of them. Fuck, it'd come knocking at their door already in her latest set of dreams, and Baby was just thankful that she and Otis managed to get out alive. Now, however, with the wind rushing by them Baby couldn't help but to let out a whoop as they continued toward the beach.
Katou made good time to the beach. It wasn’t as good a time as it would have been if he’d been flying - shorter distance, no traffic jams - but people had to make exceptions. He’d carried people flying before and that was way more work than just doing it by bike. Besides, the sky was blue without a cloud in sight, which made for bad flying weather but great beach weather.
The beach itself wasn’t that busy yet. Maybe it wouldn’t get busy - it was a weekday after all - but Katou prefered it. There was nothing worse than getting to the beach and realizing there wasn’t any good place to lay a towel. “So, whatdya wanna do?” he asked. “Grab some ice cream or find a place on the beach first?”
Hopping off the back of the bike, Baby removed the helmet and shook her head before running her fingers through her hair. "Hm, ice cream, definitely. Then we can figure out where to set up for the day." Baby was all about ice cream, especially if said ice cream was Tutti Frutti flavored.
Shifting her bag on her shoulders, a light bounce in her steps as she started toward the first ice cream stand that she saw. Giving a bright smile to the attendant, she ordered herself a sugar cone with Tutti Frutti ice cream and she was thankful that they actually had it. "Go ahead, it'll be my treat." She shifted her bag around to pull her wallet out from it, and waited to see how much it was going to be.
Katou himself was partial to chocolate ice cream. The chocolatier, the better. Maybe replacing a heroin addiction with a chocolate addiction wasn’t what people tended to recommend, but hey, at least Katou didn’t become a violent psycho when he was chowing down on chocolate bars.
“Cool,” Katou said as an almost thank you. He could pay for his own, but Katou would never pass up on having someone else pay for him. “I’ll get a couplea scoops of double chocolate fudge,” he said to the attendant after a very quick glance at the menu board. “Oh, and make it one of them chocolate dipped cones."
Baby offered him a smile, and pulled a twenty from her wallet before stuffing it back into her bag. "Oh that sounds good too." Maybe later she would have to grab herself one of those, but for now she was very content with her own cone.
Once the attendant handed over Katou's cone, Baby paid and dropped a few dollars into the tip jar. Putting her bag back onto her shoulders, Baby turned and started toward the beach. She swiped her tongue across her ice cream, humming softly at the flavor on her tongue. "So," she started as she turned to look over at Katou, "how've you been doing?"
Katou, pleased, took a moment to answer as he enjoyed his ice cream. He didn’t even notice the spot of chocolate ice cream that ended up on the tip of his nose. “Not too bad,” Katou said. Talking about the fact that his roommate had been jumped inside his own home just garnered sympathy, which was the last thing Katou wanted. “Gonna be graduating in a couple weeks,” he said cheerfully instead. “Didn’t think that was ever gonna happen. How ‘bout you?”
Baby giggled, "You got a little something there." She tapped the end of her own nose before she took another lick of her ice cream cone. "Oh yeah? That's great!" Baby had yet to finish getting her GED. Between work, and well, life in general it had been put on the back burner for the time being. Perhaps this summer she would finally go, and finish it up. It wasn't as if she really needed it considering where she worked. "I can't complain. Work at the Need/Want is going well, and Wade's moved in with me now." That was also going very well, but that went without saying. "So yeah, things are good!"
Katou rubbed his nose with the back of his hand, not the least embarrassed. “Maybe I oughtta come watch you dance sometime, Babe,” Katou said, winking. He wasn’t twenty-one yet, but that’s not what his DMV issued ID said. Katou fought back the stab of jealousy. He hadn’t been with anyone since Kung Jin had moved back to Korea, and it kind of bummed him out that so many of his friends were in happy relationships. But he knew it was petty, so he smiled cheerily. “Congrats on moving in with the old ball ’n chain though. That’s kinda a big deal.”
Baby grinned over at Katou, "Anytime you want to, baby. I'll be sure to give you a great show." Baby knew that Katou was young, but hell, she'd been there before with a fake id and getting into clubs that she wasn't supposed to be in. Baby licked her ice cream, looking thoughtful at Katou's words. It was serious, she wasn't sure how long it might last or if they would be able to co-habitat for a long time but hey, it was fun for now. "We'll see how things go." She looked over at Katou and gave a shrug of her shoulders, "We're both crazy, and so it works for now. We'll see how well our crazy meshes in a couple of months." She couldn't help but laugh, and then glanced around at the beach. "What about over there?" She pointed to a place on the beach where there weren't a lot of people.
“Well hey, he start giving you any trouble, let me know and I’ll kick his ass,” Katou said, giving her a wink. He was joking, mostly - he didn’t want to think any of his friends were dating someone who deserved a ass whooping, and Baby’d never said anything that indicated that he might need one - but he did mean it. He looked out for his friends, and if they wanted him to beat someone up for them, well, he had a fist made out of metal and he wasn’t afraid to use it.
“There looks great,” Katou said, heading over to the spot on the beach. Lots of space, lots of sun. “Great place to work on my tan.”
It warmed Baby's heart to know that Katou would stick up for her if she asked him to. Baby hadn't really had too many friends over the years, and it was nice to know that she had people that really cared about her. "Awww," she looped her free arm through his, leaning up against him with a grin, "I appreciate that, Katou. Really." Where her tone had been playful before, it turned more serious at the end. She really did appreciate it. "I'm glad that I have a friend like you in my life, and I'll be sure to let you know if Wade gives me any trouble." She didn't think that he would, actually, but it was nice to have that offer.
"Awesome!" Baby's mode shifted from serious back to her typical playful self. It would be a good place to work on their tans, and Baby was looking forward to just chilling and relaxing with Katou for the rest of the day.
