It was warming up outside, and the planter boxes in the front of the store needed work. Audrey had talked to Izzy about putting some flowers into the boxes, both at Baxter Bakery and BB2. She didn’t want them to be identical, but she loved the look of some nice, bright, summer annuals.
So Audrey was out in front of Baxter with her gardening gloves, hat, and apron on, digging around in the planter boxes. Her very pregnant belly was covered by the apron, but it was still obvious that she was well into her second trimester of her pregnancy. The protruding belly might have been a little smaller if it’d been her first pregnancy, but it was her second. Audrey was definitely showing now.
It wasn’t until this moment--when she’d purchased the seedlings to put in place--that Audrey realized she should have asked Gabe if he wouldn’t mind giving her a hand with this project. Damn. That was a missed opportunity.
Splendid had heard a lot about Baxter's thanks to the Network, but she'd yet to stop by there. Life had kept her busy, however, today was an off day and she was going to grab some treats for the evening and maybe for the rest of the week. She'd found a parking spot, and had gotten Valerian out from the backseat. The little boy was all smiles and giggles for his momma as she tickled his belly.
With a chuckle, Splendid hefted him up onto her hip and started walking down the sidewalk down to the bakery. She had just about reached the door when Valerian somehow managed to kick off his shoe right beside the woman working out front. "Oh my goodness, I'm sorry." She gave Valerian a sideways glance, and the little one was still smiling. "He hates shoes so much, and will kick them off anytime he gets a chance to."
Being a little further along in her pregnancy now, Audrey was definitely showing as she knelt beside the planter to do her work. She was well into Maternity clothes, with the bump more prominent than before. She felt like the second pregnancy popped sooner and bigger than the first. Trying to ignore her belly, she scooped dirt and planted the little flowers, until someone dropped a baby shoe on the ground in front of her. Smiling, Audrey picked it up and held it out to the young mother with the little boy.
“It’s quite all right! My little one’s the same way. Though, I think he’d just run around starkers if I let him. He just hates clothes in general.” Audrey would have to let Ben run around naked a lot more this summer. It might help with potty training later. “How old is he?” She asked, looking fondly up at the baby.
"I have a feeling this one will be the same once he manages to start walking." Splendid cut her eyes over to Valerian again and shook her head at his giggle. "Ten months. He'll be a year old in August." It was hard to believe that a year had nearly gone by so quickly. Splendid was finally in a place where she felt peace about everything. Well, almost everything. There were still sometimes when she could feel the paranoia creeping back up on her, but she tried to remind herself that she was surrounded by a wonderful support system and they would do anything that they could for her.
"How far along are you?" She asked as she took back Valerian's shoe from the woman and tried to put it back onto his foot.
“I’m due September twentieth, so I think that makes me around twenty something weeks?” Audrey said, giving the other woman a smile. “My first born is almost eighteen months. He was born on Christmas. So they’re not that far apart in age.” She said, and reached a hand up to wiggle a finger at the little one’s foot. “Hello! I’m Audrey. It’s nice to meet you, little one!”
"About half-way through it then." Splendid could remember when she was about half-way through her pregnancy with Valerian. It'd been hard, not just being alone, but still trying to decide what she was going to do. Keeping him, however, was the best choice she'd ever made. "Aw, no, they aren't. I've not planned on having anymore any time soon." As it was, hers and Max's...whatever it was was still new, and while they were sleeping together she wasn't quite ready to make that step just yet. Valerian kicked his little foot, giggling softly as Splendid smiled. "This is Valerian, and I'm Splendid. It's nice to meet you Audrey."
“The pleasure is all mine, really.” Audrey said, grinning up at the baby and his mother. “Valerian and Splendid. You have such interesting names!” She didn’t mind, though. Audrey was married to Merlin. She dusted her hands off, then sat back on her heels, thinking she really should have just asked someone else to do the planting. Or maybe she should use a little magic to speed things along.
“Are you two headed inside for a drink?” Audrey asked. “I could sure use a break from all this gardening.”
Chuckling, Splendid nodded. "Yes, that we do." Splendid was aware that their names were different from the norm. She'd have said her parents were hippies, but that wasn't the case. They'd never really explained to her why they'd named her what they had, but she never minded.
Splendid glanced toward the door, and nodded. "Yes, that's what we were planning on." She offered Audrey a hand. "I think that it would be a good idea for you to take a break too. Need some help getting up?"
“Oh, I think I can manage...” Of course, Audrey’s center of gravity was all messed up, considering the growing belly. But she accepted the hand and used it for balance as she hoisted herself up using her legs. “Thank you!” She gave the other a smile. “I could definitely go for a cup of tea right about now. Maybe iced?” Holding her hand out as if testing for rain, but really testing for the temperature of the air, Audrey turned to lead the way into the cafe. “It’s been so hot lately.”
"You're welcome!" Splendid could remember how hard it'd been to get up herself when she'd managed to get down. "I definitely think iced would be the way to go." She replied with a nod, and then let out a long breath. "It has been. I'm looking forward to winter again." Of course, she hadn't minded the snow either, so she was hoping that it would, again, snow in the OC. Heading into Baxter's, Splendid held the door open for Audrey before finally stepping on through the door. "I think I'll also have an iced tea." She wasn't exactly in the mood for coffee right now, iced or not.
“Brilliant! Come with me.” Audrey said, giving the other woman a smile. She led the way up to the counter to get the two most delicious iced teas ever, and a handful of sugar cookies with delectable royal icing on them. This was going to be a wonderful break from the heat.
