Lin Beifong's body was hardened and strong, well kept and fit, even for a woman just pushing thirty. Her spine was ramrod straight, her stance meant to tell others she could not be moved, she could not be swayed. Unbendable. It was her first week as a detective. Her mother would have been so proud of her. She had a hard time letting go of old habits, and when a call had come in for backup, she'd been close enough to respond.
She folded her arms as she regarded the young man in front of her. He was clearly strung out, brandishing a knife. He'd been caught with a large amount of cocaine. Not usually her beat, but he was still breaking the law. The situation had gone on long enough. Unfolding her arms, she took a few steps forward, "Okay kid, put the knife down. You're already facing drug charges and threatening a cop, do you really want to add assault to the charge?"
"Do you have any idea who my father is!" He couldn't have been much older than seventeen or eighteen, his voice cracking under the strain.
Lin shook her head. She didn't believe in special circumstances for the rich or powerful. The law was the law, even if it was sometimes unfair to the poor, "Your father could be the pope and I'd still bring you in. Come on, make this easier on yourself."
"What are you gonna do, old lady?"
It was the shift in his stance, and the flash in his eyes that signaled his intent. The knife jutted forward, but Lin had already stepped aside. She calmly grabbed his wrist, twisting it painfully to force the weapon from his hand. In the same smooth motion she pulled it behind his back and slammed him against a brick wall. Twenty-five years of Kung Fu, fifteen of that spent under the training of her mother. It was like she didn't even have to try.
"You have the right to remain silent..." She started, as she cuffed him. Just another day enforcing the law. In the years to come, this arrest would be why she continually got passed up for promotion.
