Jem was unsure if his dreams were influencing his health or if it was all in his head as a result of the dreams. He knew that mind over matter was a very strong thing so it was entirely possible that subconsciously he thought he should be getting worse because he was in the dreams and so in the waking world he felt that way and all he needed to do to feel better was to think it. Lately he’d been waking up feeling extremely run down after a dream or he’d have to try and cover up bone wrenching coughed that followed even the simplest tasks. He had been taking more Yin Fen than he has in the beginning to try and mask these moments and he knew deep down that he should tell Will and Tessa, even if it was all in his head, but he didn’t want them to worry more than they already did. He knew it was stupid, but they both had enough to deal with without him adding to it. Will had classes, just as he did, and Tessa had the book shop. He told himself that he could deal with his health on his own at least until finals were over then perhaps he’d see someone. Not that he thought anyone could do much.
Jem was walking through the park, looking for Will who he was meeting up with after having spent a few hours helping Tessa at the book store. He had taken a little more Yin Fen than usual that morning so he didn’t have his dragon headed cane with him this day so he could pass for mostly normal. He’d felt the need to feel normal that day after the dream he’d had the night before where they had been ambushed in front of the Institute and Tessa had been taken.
Will always worried about Jem, it was hard not to when the person you loved had an illness you couldn’t do anything about. He tried to keep an eye on him because he knew Jem didn’t trouble himself or Tessa with things. Had he got access to Jem’s supply he would have noticed the increased usage but he wouldn’t show such distrust as to check on it constantly. Even if he wanted to. He had to trust Jem.
Spotting his boyfriend across the park he smiled and made his way over, slinging an arm around his shoulders, “Hey gorgeous” he said, “Missed you this morning”
Jem had been so deep in thought about the dreams that he jumped slightly when he felt someone’s arm around his shoulders and it took him a moment to realize the it was Will, “Hello, William.” He smiled and brought a hand up to run through his hair, which had been colored recently to hide his silver roots, “Tessa and I had to leave early to open the shop.” It was only a little bit of an exaggeration; he’d actually left after Tessa had, but before Will got up.
“Sorry didn’t mean to make you jump” he said, pressing a quick kiss to his temple, “She should make the other staff do the early starts” he teased, before frowning a little, “Are you okay Jem?” he wasn’t sure what it was but something felt off. More than just him catching Jem unawares.
Jem wasn’t usually one for PDA, but at the moment he didn’t mind that they were outside in public where anyone could see Will kiss his temple. He needed the closeness right now. “I didn’t mind. I enjoy helping Tessa at the shop. And going early means I get a little extra time to spend with her before the shop opens., And I’m fine, Will. You worry too much.” He smiled at his boyfriend in an attempt to reassure him.
Will didn’t care one bit who saw them but he knew Jem and Tessa were more reserved than he was so he tried to keep his displays to a minimum. “Urgh why are my boyfriend and girlfriend morning people” he teased, before admitting, “My worry is directly proportionate to how much I love you. So it’s no wonder I worry a lot” he said in his charming way.
“I love you too, Will, but you worry too much sometimes,” Jem was glad that Will worried, but he didn’t want him to worry too much. He didn’t want it to take over Will’s life. “You need to be able to have time for yourself too.” They walked a little further when Jem heard someone call Will’s name and he turned his head to see a small group of guys walking in their direction.
Before Will could answer that he turned at the sound of his name, “Hey Guys” he called back with a wave, “You should meet these guys, I’ve told them all about us” he told Jem, meaning of course about their awesome dream abilities. Which, as soon as they were close enough, they begged to see since both Will and Jem were here. “What do you think? Fancy a sparring demo?” he asked with a grin. Will did love the chance to show off.
Jem wasn’t surprised that Will had told his friends about their sparring, but he was curious just how much more Will had told his friends, not that it was exactly a secret that they were dating or anything like that. As Will’s friends asked for a demonstration, Jem figured it was a good way to assure Will that he was okay and he had taken extra Yin Fen that morning so there shouldn’t have been anything to worry about, “Alright. Why not.”
Will wasn’t the shy sort, most of the people he knew and worked with in his classes knew he was dating Jem and Tessa, he didn’t think there was anything to be ashamed of. They were all happy, consenting adults after all.
Giving Jem a grin he nodded, they put down their bags and took off their jackets and after a quick quiet chat decided what they were going to do. And then they began.
After setting down his bag and jacket, Jem rolled up his sleeves, which showed off the few Runes on his forearms as he and Will discussed what they were going to do. It wouldn’t be like when they sparred at home, but they were still going to give Will’s friends a show. Since they had begun training together they had become extremely familiar with each other’s fighting styles just like in the dreams and what they did was almost more like a dance than anything else. It was almost hard to believe that they hadn’t been doing this their entire lives. In the dreams it had taken years for them to learn the things they were currently doing, but thanks to the dreams it came naturally now.
It was almost easier since they’d become lovers to anticipate and move accordingly to the others attacks and defences. It was like a mix of dance and gymnastics which could have a dangerous edge. It certainly seemed to be impressing Will’s friends and he winked at Jem as they moved.
In their dreams, the relationship that they had in the waking world would have been illegal since they were Parabatai, but there were no rules about it in the waking world so there had been nothing stopping them once they had managed to admit their feelings and it had helped when it came to their sparring and pretty much anything else that they did together.
Jem smiled in return as Will winked at him and he dodged a swipe then came at Will with his own punch, but he had somehow overestimated where Will was and the momentum of the punch, while it wouldn’t have hurt Will, propelled Jem past his Parabatai and as he tried to catch himself felt a wave of dizziness overtake him and he fell to one knee, coughing.
Will immediately stopped and moved to kneel next to Jem, “Are you alright?” he asked in concern, ignoring their audience to focus entirely on his boyfriend. “Tell me what’s wrong?” he said laying a hand on Jem’s cheek.
“I’m fine.” Jem shook his head, turning it away from Will’s hand to cough into his own, not wanting to cough on Will. As he took his hand away from his mouth, he noticed the blood and he knew there was no way Will didn’t see it either. It was easy enough to explain away a coughing fit, but not a coughing fit and blood. “I...it’s no...thing.” Jem placed his other hand on Will’s shoulder, attempting to get to his feet, but felt a fresh wave of dizziness come over him, both legs buckling under his weight.
“Oh Jem” Will said when he noticed the blood, how had Jem gotten this bad without him noticing, he felt awful. Catching him when he could have fallen he lifted him easily, too easily, into his arms and turned to his friends, “Rob you have a car right? Please can you take us to the hospital?” he asked nodding thanks when his friend nodded and they moved towards the car park.
Jem knew that if they went to the hospital there wouldn’t be anything they could do for him. The first time he’d gotten sick all the doctors had been able to do was wait. It had been his dreams that had stabilized him. The doctors had been baffled by what was making him sick after all. “Will...no, I’m fine…” However, simple talking was difficult for him at the moment and he found himself coughing again and this time when the dizziness hit him, he knew that he should have paid heed to the dream he’d had the night before where he’d passed out after fighting a group of automatons. Before he could say another word everything went dark and he went limp in Will’s arms.
