It had been far too long since Backup had seen his favorite mini-human AKA Viv. Since she had moved out actually. Veronica still saw Sharon on a daily basis because of work and just spending time with her best friend in general, but her dog had been deprived. Which was precisely why they were all in the park. Although at the moment Backup was currently running around with some of the other dogs while Viv watched happily in her stroller. Veronica could have sworn she saw the little girl clap.
“I’m glad we finally got around to doing this,” Veronica commented. It was long overdue but she had been pretty busy with the move and she knew Sharon was also busy in general.
Veronica was busy, too. Sharon had a full life--and though she saw Veronica every day, she didn’t get to see Backup much at all. Not since Logan stole them away from her. Sharon was very happy for her friend, though, absolutely thrilled that things were going well for her and Logan. Viv seemed to be enjoying the dog show as Backup bounced around and played with some of the other canines in the park.
“Me too.” Sharon said. It was a few minutes when they could just sit and enjoy the sunshine, they weren’t on surveillance or going through data. This wasn’t a work assignment, it was purely social. And that was nice. Sharon glanced over at her friend. “Does Backup miss me terribly?”
“Not as much as he misses Viv,” she quipped. “Have you found a new dog yet?” she was pretty sure she remembered Sharon mentioning that she was going to look for one with Leon. Leon could use a dog too. It beat having a pet butterfly because really what was up with that? Veronica still didn’t understand.
“No.” Sharon said, shaking her head. She was more resigned than sad about that, really. If Leon was ever going to come over, she wasn’t sure she could handle him seeing her dog as a person. It was bad enough he could communicate with them, but seeing them as … people? Sharon couldn’t shake the weirdness she felt at that thought.
“I’m keeping my options open.” She said, picking up a toy and passing it back to the baby. “I only went looking once, but it wasn’t very fruitful.”
“I guess that means you’ll have to come visit Backup more often,” Veronica replied. She couldn’t blame Sharon. Her old dog Pete was pretty damn sweet and special. And then there was Backup and he was definitely one of a kind. Finding a dog after them was going to be challenging. “Maybe you can try again when Viv is a little older and can play with him or her?”
“I would love to visit Backup more often. And if you ever need anyone to watch him…” Sharon offered. Backup was an amazing dog. And now that Viv was sitting up, playing with toys, and interacting with her environment more and more, Sharon would love to have Backup around more. She wanted Viv to get used to having a dog around, and learn from an early age how to treat them. “Yeah, that’s a better idea. Maybe when she can help with the training and everything.” That’d be a few years, but Sharon was a patient woman.
“You’re first on my lift.” There were plenty of people who enjoyed watching Backup. Her dad, Sharon, okay two. Well Leon but that had sort of been forced upon him. “Next time Logan takes me on a surprise trip I’ll be showing up at your door with him,” him as in Backup. Not Logan. She would not be dropping off her boyfriend for Sharon to watch… although that might not be the worst idea.
“I bet Viv would be great with that. And in the mean time you can visit Backup or have him visit you as much as you want,” Veronica promised. Good luck finding a dog as good as Backup though. He came dream trained which had always been a definite bonus.
Sharon already had Viv to take care of. Dumping Logan on her, too? ...okay, bad joke. But she’d love to watch Backup. Anytime. It wasn’t like he was difficult--and walking him got her out of the house, too, anyway. “Do you expect many surprise trips out of Logan?” She asked. That sounded romantic.
“I would love it, and I’m sure Viv would, too. I just worry that Backup might not. I mean, it’s hard to keep her little, grubby hands away from his ears and nose. Hopefully he doesn’t mind being a tug toy.” Sharon teased.
“I have no clue,” Veronica replied. She honestly didn’t even know what Logan was up to half the time. Like this barbecue they were apparently throwing. It was a shame Sharon was going to have to miss it, but she’d have fun on her trip with Leon. As far as surprise trips? She supposed they could be considering romantic but Veronica honestly didn’t think too much of it.
It was a good thing Backup was so well behaved. Other dogs might bite Viv for tugging on their ears and nose. Not that Backup was all bark and no bite. He would go after anyone that tried to hurt Veronica. He was probably the same way with Viv and Sharon at this point as well. “Backup is fine,” Veronica said looking over at her dog still playing happily with the others. “If he didn’t like it you guys would know it.”
Sharon wouldn’t put it past Logan to do something like that for Veronica. He was that kind of guy--the kind who wanted to make things perfect for her. It was sweet, really. He put on a gruff exterior, sometimes, but Sharon could tell he was head over heels for her best friend--and that was adorable. “Well if they happen, let me know.”
Backup was probably the best dog in the whole world. Sharon smiled fondly. “That’s true.” She turned to look over at where Viv was sitting on the blanket watching the world around her. She was surrounded by toys, and the dog was nearby. It was likely like heaven to the little baby. Sharon’s heart swelled. “It’s kinda weird now that Aramis and Porthos are gone.”
“Like I said, first on the list,” Veronica assured her friend. And really she had a feeling Logan just might take her away on another surprise trip. It was his style.
“Yeah, but they’re still involved right?” Veronica asked raising a brow. “Besides it’s not like Viv is lacking love and attention in her life.” That baby had more pseudo parents than anyone Veronica knew.
“Oh, yes. Of course.” Sharon said, nodding. “But now that they’re all the way across the country, it means I have more day-to-day stuff to do. More decisions to make. I can send them notes and they’re financially supportive, absolutely. But… they’re not here to turn to for the uh-ohs and the just-in-cases. You know?” It was hard to describe. Now that Aramis and Porthos were gone, Sharon felt even more like a single mother than she ever had before.
Veronica wasn’t so much referring to her two fathers as all the other people in Viv’s life. Sharon’s mom, herself, Peggy, Leon, Logan, probably Sharon’s new boyfriend, hell even Keith. Both Sharon and Viv had a good support system around them. “That’s what your mom is for,” Veronica quipped.
“And you and Logan,” Sharon said, breaking into a smile as she looked over at her best friend. Sharon had never had a sister, but Veronica was as close as they got. “And Leon, and Peggy. And Bucky. Speaking of…” She leaned back on her hands in the shade of the tree, enjoying the breeze in the warm, pre-summer air. “...he said he wants to be around more. He said he loves me. Well, he said he loves Viv first, then he said he loves me.”
“That’s pretty serious,” Veronica commented with a small smile. She wasn’t much for feelings talks but she was happy for her friend. “So he’s been around a lot?”
“Yeah. We've been spending a couple nights a week together for a while now.” Sharon explained. She knew Veronica wasn't into the feelings talk stuff, but it was good to let her friends know how big things we're getting with her boyfriend. “It's… a little terrifying. But nice. I think.”
“I’m sure you’ll figure it out,” Veronica assured her. Adjusting to a more serious relationship could be a challenge. At least it was for Veronica. But it was also worth it in the end.
