Celaena loved dancing and she loved sharing it with her friends when and where she could. When Rey had responded to her message on the Net, she had been extra excited. Now that she had the scars hidden with Magnus’ glamour she felt like her old self again and she wanted to share her lifelong passion with her newest friend. Celaena grinned as she saw her friend coming up the drive to the mansion. Clapping to herself as she moved to the door, she got there before the butler and thanked him as she shooed him playfully on his way. Celaena opened the door before Rey could ring the bell and grabbed her friend in a tight hug. “Rey! I’m so happy you came! We’re going to have such an awesome time!” she beamed as she pulled back to look at her. “How are you? Everything ok? Find the place all right?”
Learning to dance was probably a good idea eventually. While Rey didn’t normally do such things she could expect Finn to drag her somewhere some day and she wanted to be prepared.
Celaena’s house was huge and she was a little wide-eyed as she tried to take it in. “I’m fine, thank you. It wasn’t too hard to find, but how do you not get lost in this place?” She squeezed Celaena back, not really minding the affection.
Celaena shrugged and started to lead Rey through the house to her dance studio. “Points of reference?” she joked. “And if you do get lost, just call for Mr Thomas, he’s got mad skills when it comes to orientation and stuff,” she laughed, pushing open the door to her studio and bouncing into the room. She spread her arms wide to present the large room. It had a high ceiling, mirrors on three of the wall and large windows on the remaining one with a ballet barre placed around the room. “Well, what do you think?” She bounded over to the other side of the room and opened another mirror covered door to reveal a fully equipped gym as well. “You’re welcome to come and use any of this whenever you want,” she told her friend. Celaena enjoyed sharing with her friends. She was in a fortunate position to be able to after all.
“Wow…” Having an actual butler? It kind of blew Rey’s mind. Her eyes remained wide, taking everything in. “Oh you have no bloody idea how badly I need a gym. I have this makeshift...thing… in my closet that I’ve been using for pull ups and the like but it’s a little dangerous and I’m afraid one day it’ll topple over and kill me.” She sounded cheerful as she spoke of it.
Celaena laughed and shrugged as she looked around the room. “Like I say, you’re welcome to come and use it any time you like. Don’t want to be hearing that you’re in the emergency room with concussion or anything. It’s only really me who uses it,” she looked back at Rey. The room was equipped with a treadmill, elliptical trainer, weight machines, yoga balls and much more. “There’s also a hot tub by the pool you can use when you’re finished in here,” she offered. “Speaking of which…” Celaena clapped and bounced over to Rey with a big grin. “Do you wanna have a look at bikinis and check out the pool?” she tempted playfully.
“I’ll have you know it’s not as dangerous as I make it sound,” Rey joked. Though really she had her at gym and hot tub was the icing on the cake. “Well, I don’t see why not.” she should feel more embarrassed than she was, but it was just swimsuits and a pool. She didn’t see the point in being self-conscious.
“Yeah, but why take chances when you could be here with me watching out for you!” Celaena pointed out perkily as she took Rey’s hand and led her through the house back up to her room. “I’ve got the cutest little bikini that is going to look amazing on you! Just wait!” she reassured her excitedly, leaving Rey by the door and heading over to her dresser. She pulled out a selection of bikinis and laid them on her bed for Rey to see. “I’ve got this one, or this one, and this one’s cute too! Oh my god! There are so many you would look amazing in!” Celaena told her, turning around and throwing a few more into the fray. “What do you think then? Any you like the look of?” she asked expectantly.
They were all so skimpy, and Rey had a momentary worry that it was showing too much. She was used to covering things because of the sun, but this was quite the opposite. Still, she pointed to the first one. “That one. The other two are a little too frilly for my tastes.”
She wasn’t going to back down, now! “I doubt I’d look good in that.”
“Are you kidding? With your figure?” Celaena asked incredulously as she picked up her own bikini. “I could put you in a sack and you’d look amazing,” she smiled as she told her matter-of-factly. “There’s a bathroom through there to change into it if you’d like,” she pointed to the adjoining room to her room before stripping her t-shirt off. She was a dancer, so she didn’t really have any qualms with partial nudity or anything. She had her necklace on, so she didn’t need to worry about the scars on her back showing either.
“Thanks,” Rey said. She smiled, and slipped into the bathroom. She wasn’t used to changing around people at all. Or being around people at all.
She doubted Celaena’s words, but there was no harm in at least trying it on. She snapped a picture in the mirror, though really who would she show it to. Finn? She wasn’t sure she wanted to encourage his crush on her. She didn’t even understand her own feelings on the matter. Dating was never something on her radar before she’d accidentally gone on one with him.
She came out and struck a pose. “How do I look?”
Celaena turned at the sound of her friend’s voice, grinning when she saw her. “Shit hot!” she exclaimed, wishing she could wolf whistle. “Wow girl, you look amazing! If only I didn’t already have a boyfriend…” she trailed off jokingly and tossed a wink at Rey over her shoulder. “Just one last thing…” she trailed off and looked over at her hat stand. Picking a wide brimmed, light straw hat, she came over and placed it on Rey’s head, examining the look before deciding it was good. She nodded, pleased with her work then picked up the towels from her bed that she’d set aside earlier. “So? Do you have one?” she asked, throwing a towel in her direction before picking up her sunglasses and own black, wide brimmed hat. “Or is it just me who gets to appreciate that fine bod?” she teased, leading the way back down and out to the pool.
“I uh… thanks.” Rey adjusted the hat a little. “What’s it like? Having a boyfriend. I’ve got a bloke who’s interested but I don’t know how I feel about him. I care about him a lot but…” she shrugged and followed Celaena. “I’ve never dated before, or anything of the sort. Been too busy. And too alone, really.” Except she’d felt something back during the Empire invasion. She just didn’t know what it had been. “Should I send him a picture?”
“You’re welcome,” Celaena shrugged easily and smiled at her as they walked. “What’s it like? Uhh...I’ve never really thought about it to be honest,” she tilted her head as she considered the question. “Damian...Damian is amazing,” she shook her head and shrugged as she tried to explain. “He challenges me, trains with me. He’s kind and considerate and quite the gentleman really, but get him on the training mat and he’s a force to be reckoned with,” she grinned, remembering training sessions where they pinned each other down, leading to much more...enjoyable activities.
“But what it’s like? Well, it’s great to have someone I can always rely on, who loves me for everything, even my faults,” she told Rey, thinking back to how he had supported her when her scars had appeared on her back. The magic necklace she was wearing was doing a perfect job at hiding the god awful things thankfully. “I uh...don’t know if you noticed, but I can be a little high maintenance. Means I can be a bit of a handful, but he just takes it all in his stride. I love him and I don’t want to ever be without him,” she admitted.
“Why don’t you tell me a bit more about this guy then? What’s he like? How does he make you feel?” she asked as they approached the pool. She draped a towel over one of the recliners as she listened to Rey respond. “What you say may decide whether I think it’s a good idea to send him a pic or not,” she told her.
Training with a partner would be nice, Rey reasoned. She could get on board with that. Cel seemed to be really into her boyfriend, which was more puzzling to her, but she could still get on board with that.
She smiled at her friend, voice wry, “I hadn’t noticed at all that you can be high maintenance.” She winked a little, then stood at the end of the pool looking at the water. For a moment, she was a Jakku girl again, and that much water was intimidating. “Uhm. Finn? I guess you could say he’s a little high maintenance too. But he’s sweet, and caring. Funny. Rather brave. The only person to ever..come back for me.”
“Cheeky,” Celaena grinned as Rey winked at her. Celaena smiled sadly at her friend Rey as she spoke. She remembered feeling like that before she was adopted, always waiting for someone and always disappointed when they didn’t come for her. It was weird to miss people that she’d never really known, weirder still to want them to come back for her. Eventually realising they never would. She stepped over to stand next to Rey and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, squeezing her shoulders tight. “Well he’s not the only one now,” she reassured her, looking straight into her eyes.
“Come on, sit with me,” she said, sitting down on the edge of the pool and dangling her feet in the water. “So this Finn guy, how do you know him? How did you meet?” she asked.
Rey leaned into the hug for a moment. “Thank you. That really means a lot.” Having friends was the strangest feeling. People she could rely on, and she was glad it extended beyond her dreams. Cel meant that she could connect with someone without all that baggage.
“We met on the network. And then started dreaming about the same place.” Rey didn’t want to believe in fate, or destiny, but her lightsaber said otherwise.
“Anytime, you know that,” Celaena smiled at her. She and Rey came from similar places but both had different journeys to where they were now. She only hoped she could be of some help if Rey ever needed it.
“Cool, so what are your Dreams about? Are you...close in them?” she asked, taking Rey’s hand and gently pulling her down to sit next to her.
Wishing she could express her feelings properly, Rey simply nodded and let Cel pulled her down. She folded her arms over her knees. “Well, we met when I hit him because I thought he’d stolen a droid’s master’s jacket. Then we made a great team escaping the First Order. I suppose we got close. Saved each other a few times.”
“Well, teamwork’s a good start I guess,” Celaena shrugged. She could tell by Rey’s disposition that this was something important that she was figuring out. “Now, you don’t have to listen to me at all because Damian’s my first and I’m pretty sure he’ll be my last, but tell me,” she breathed. “Do you feel excited to see him? Do you get all jittery and nervous? Do you want to just...grab him and never let go? Do you miss him when you’re apart?” she asked. “That’s how I felt with Damian anyway. Some people feel differently. I’ve heard people say they feel this deep yearning, like they’re irresistibly drawn to each other and can’t seem to help themselves when they flirt or kiss, does any of that sound familiar?” she asked. “It’s ok if you don’t. Some people are just meant to be friends,” she offered quickly, not wanting Rey to feel pressured into saying yes to anything she’d said if it wasn’t true.
“I never get jittery or nervous, I’m not sure that’s in my disposition.” Rey smiled. “It is nice to see him, and there are times I want to grab him and not let go, but I don’t know if that’s my abandonment issues speaking or not. I’m always afraid of people leaving.”
But she did feel drawn to him. Rey rolled her shoulders. “He took me on a date and I never realized it was one. But he kissed me once and I guess I liked it? I don’t have anything to compare it to. I don’t want to… lose him.”
“How did you not realise it was a date?” Celaena asked, curious as to how she missed that clue. “You guess you liked it? What do you mean? Did you want to...y’know, do more of it? And don’t say I guess,” she told her friend with a gentle nudge of her shoulder and a smile. “If you don’t want to lose him then you have to be honest with what you want and what you feel. If he doesn’t turn you on that’s ok, but if he does, if there’s some spark there then you have to look at it and see if you want it and if you’re ready for more,” she reasoned
“I’ve never been on one before! I barely watch movies or television, how was I supposed to know dinner and a movie is a romantic date!” She threw her hands up. “I guess it only really bothers me because I don’t want to hurt him or lead him on. Or have him assume things that aren’t there. But there’s a part of me that… likes it.” She dropped her hands. “I just wish I knew what I actually wanted. Or what I’m actually feeling.”
“Hey, hey, it’s ok,” Celaena put a hand over Rey’s and squeezed gently. “Look, how long have you actually known this guy?”
“A couple of months now,” She replied. “Well, longer than that. We met earlier this year, actually. Is that bad?”
“No, it’s not bad at all,” Celaena shrugged and sighed as she looked out over the pool. “Some people can be friends for a long time and then they find they suddenly feel more for each other. Others feel it right away. I can’t tell you how you feel Rey, you’ll know eventually, but if you want to keep him as a friend I would say...be honest with him. Tell him what you’ve told me, that you’re not sure, you don’t want to hurt him and you’d like to just be friends for a time and see how things go. If he respects you then he should give you your space,” she reasoned. “But you don’t have to listen to me if you don’t want,” she shrugged amiably. “I’ve only ever had Damian as a boyfriend and we danced around each other for some time before we got together,” she smiled.
Rey thought there would probably be more dancing before she figured anything out. She just didnt want to take Finn for granted. He meant enough to her that it caused her physical pain to think about losing him. She pulled her legs up and hugged her knees. “I suppose...we shall just see how it goes.”
“You’ll be fine,” Celaena wrapped an arm around Rey’s shoulders and squeezed. “And if you need to blow off some steam or anything you know just where to come.”
