Tyler had been worried when Caroline hadn’t shown up for her final. Worried enough that it took him a while to manage to get his head in the game, though he thought he managed to get most of the answers on his final. Not that he was that worried about it anyway. Between everything else that was going on, Tyler was giving serious consideration to just not going back to school next semester. If it wasn’t for football, and the fact that he was pretty sure that he was a shoo-in for being a starter in the next season due to his new werewolf powers, he’d have no reason to go back. Well, that and he wasn’t sure how Blossom would feel about dating a college drop-out.
But she looked fine now, whatever had gone on that morning. Tyler was still getting used to this vampire thing in his dreams, but he’d been filled in on the whole desiccation thing. That’s what happened when a vampire got staked, and that’s what happened when a vampire was starved.
“You look good for waking up desiccated,” Tyler said, moving some things around in their fridge to make room for the twelve pack of beer he’d picked up for Caroline and Peeta. He’d have one or two, but it wasn’t like he could get trashed. He did have to work that afternoon.
Peeta had made himself scarce so Caroline and Tyler could talk. About a few things. Caroline wanted to know how the final was and maybe get some hints for when she did take it. And also to talk about dreams and her recent desiccation. She wasn’t exactly sure how much she should tell Tyler. There was nothing really about him, he was barely even in the dreams anymore. Although he had come back to Mystic Falls for her baby shower. Because it’s totally normal to have your ex-boyfriend at your baby shower but that was besides the point.
“Grab me one,” she called to Tyler as he put the beers in the fridge. She was sitting on the couch her feet tucked under her. “Thanks, I think,” she replied to his comment. “I’ve had more than my usual amount of blood today.” Helped her recover. Well that along with Regina’s magic.
“Obviously,” Tyler said, returning with the beers. Truth be told, he was glad that Peeta had stepped out. He was willing to give the guy a chance, but that didn’t mean he wanted to get buddy-buddy with him. He held one out for Caroline, and when she took it, he sat down on the other side of the couch. “You doing alright, Caroline? I don’t just mean physically,” because physically, she probably was fine. Vampires didn’t seem to let much get them down for long.
Caroline’s fist reaction to say that yes, she was fine. She didn’t like people worrying about her and really it wasn’t a big deal. She was all healed now. There was no more immediate danger, although in the back of her mind Caroline was worried it might happen again. Like in the dreams. But there were no actual magical babies feeding on her blood so hopefully it was just a one time thing. But Tyler was right. She wasn’t so great emotionally. She had basically been dying this morning.
“Physically I’m obviously fine,” she replied opening up her beer and taking a sip. Tyler could clearly see just how fine she was, hell he had even commented on it. “Emotionally? I don’t know. Desiccating is not a pleasant experience.”
“No, I don’t think it would be,” Tyler said, frowning to himself. “Seriously though, what the hell happened? You didn’t get starved, did you?” he asked.
“No. Not starved,” she confirmed. That would have been so much easier to deal with. Just blood and she’d be back to normal. There would be no need for Regina to have rushed over in the middle of the night. “More like my blood was fed on?” Caroline didn’t completely understand it herself. “Or like the magic from my blood was siphoned out.” That seemed more accurate since apparently Alaric’s babies were siphoners. Thanks Jo.
Tyler’s eyebrows furrowed. He was obviously missing something. “The magic from your blood?” Tyler asked. “The magic that makes you a vampire? Can people do that?” Some kind of vampire that went after magic blood instead of the normal stuff?
Caroline paused thinking about Tyler’s question. She was unsure about just how much to tell him. But whatever. This wasn’t about him, so it wasn’t really a spoiler right? Oh well she was going for it. “They can if they are living in your womb.”
It was evidently the wrong time to be taking a sip of beer, because Tyler choked. He coughed a couple of times, and then gave Caroline a bewildered look. “In the womb? You got knocked up in the dreams? How’s that even possible?”
Caroline sighed. Not because she was annoyed with Tyler. It was just a very complicated thing to explain and she had been through it so many times. But that wasn’t his fault. “Alaric got this witch pregnant,” Tyler’s new-now-dead girlfriend’s older sister to be exact but she didn’t seen to go into all that. She didn’t even think Tyler was at the part where they dated yet and that lasted a while. “She was killed and her coven did some spell to transfer the babies to my womb. So yay I get Alaric’s dead wife’s magical babies. Until they are born then I gotta give them up… except I think I stay in their life cause I’ve seen three years in the future and apparently I’m engaged to Alaric.” Ooops that was a little far but oh well. Whatever, the words had all poured out of her mouth in a rush. She took a breath and then a nice long sip of beer.
Tyler didn’t really know what to say, so for a moment he just stared at Caroline as he attempted to process everything that she had just said. “That’s the most fucked up thing I’ve ever heard, Caroline,” he said after a moment.
“Tell me about it,” Caroline agreed. The dreams were in such ‘what the fuck is this BS’ territory now it wasn’t even funny. “That’s life in Mystic Falls for you.” That basically summed it all up. Mystic Falls was just in-fucking-sane.
Tyler wondered how he’d feel about that when it happened in the dreams. In the dreams, he and Caroline had started hanging out quite a bit after Klaus had sacrificed Jules and Elena’s aunt for some ritual. He was kind of crazy about her, though he wasn’t about to make another move. Not after he’d already kissed her and been shot down. But he couldn’t imagine he’d be happy about something like that.
Then again, Caroline was way ahead of him. Maybe by then he’d moved on. “Man, if only we could dream of evil talking monkeys and kindergarten,” he said, smiling a little. As far as the dream lottery went, Blossom and her sisters seemed to have come out near the top.
It took a minute for Caroline to get the reference. Sure she was friends with Blossom but they didn’t talk a ton about dreams. However she did remember Blossom saying she was five in the dreams. And she was pretty sure she saw a post about an evil monkey from either her or Bubbles. “We all can’t be as lucky as your girlfriend.”
“If only, huh?” Tyler asked. Instead of talking monkeys and nap time, Tyler got to break every bone in his body once a month and Caroline got stuck with weird magical babies - which was something Tyler was still having trouble processing. It said something about how much he’d already grown to accept the transformation that he was pretty sure that Caroline got the short end of the stick on that one. “But hey, at least you don’t have any magical blood sucking babies here.” He frowned. “They’re not going to be vampire babies, are they?”
Nope. She definitely didn’t have any babies here. Had already freaked out twice about it. Making Peeta buy her a test and then having Regina make sure there was no cloaking spell on her womb. But Tyler’s question did make her laugh a bit. “No. They’re witches. Like their real mom.” And just like that the laughter was gone. This whole dreaming about babies thing was fucking with her big time.
Tyler frowned, a little concerned when Caroline suddenly sobered up. He scootched closer to her on the couch and went to put a comforting arm around her shoulders. “Hey, I’m pretty sure that carting them around in your womb makes you real enough,” he said, hoping that that was the right thing to say. What exactly was the right thing to say when your ex-high school fling was apparently sad because she was loaned her womb out to a couple of magical witch babies that she hadn’t had a part in conceiving? It wasn’t like they wrote books on the subject.
“I guess,” she replied forcing a smile back on her face. It was weird knowing the only babies she would ever have were in dreams and they technically weren’t hers. “But anyway,” she added slightly more cheerful. She wasn’t exactly her usual self considering everything she had gone through that day, but she was as close and she was probably going to get for now. “How was the final? Should I compel to postpone or just give myself a B?”
“I wouldn’t write a final I didn’t have to,” Tyler said, grinning. Hell, if he was a vampire he was pretty sure he’d have no need of school. As it was, he was considering dropping out now with everything else going on. Who had time for papers when you had to make sure you were properly chained up every month? “But it’s not so bad. You’ll probably do okay. We can go over the questions I remember if you want.”
The thought of just compelling her grade was super appealing. However Caroline wanted to get a grade she actually earned. She had compelled herself better grades in the past thanks to dream nonsense this time she wanted to do it right. “Yes, please,” Caroline agreed her smile widening slightly. Okay so it was still kind of cheating but whatever. “Thanks, Tyler.” Not just for the finals help and beer either. It did mean a lot that he stopped by to check up on her.
