Caleb felt a bit as if he was frozen in time. He hadn’t had any new dreams since Hanna and the rest of the girls’ kidnapping. He had pulled back a bit on seeing Hanna. Knowing his girlfriend needed her space and that he was crowding her. Plus finals were keeping her occupied. That didn’t ease his worries any though. He was spending more and more time at the bar after work.
Now Hanna’s finals were over and she had the summer off. Caleb would hopefully be able to keep a better eye on her. And of course spoil her. That started with letting her choose how she wanted to celebrate. Of course she picked the perfect activity. A movie on the beach sounded perfect to him. Not to mention the live entertainment before hand and the booths for food and drinks? He was particularly happy about the drinking part.
“So where to first?” he asked his arm wrapped around Hanna as they walked from his car to the beach. “Dinner?” which would probably consist of some type of food truck creation.
Hanna had definitely been feeling crowded, even if she couldn’t quite place the why. Sometimes a girl needed her space. Add in the stress of school and how everything was ramping up for the end of the quarter and she’d been a bundle of nerves and studying. Still trying to prove herself that she wasn’t the dumb blonde airhead she had been in high school in her attempts to be popular.
But now, that wasn’t an issue. Classes were officially over until the fall and she could relax and spend time with Caleb. And worry about dreams. She was relieved that she hadn’t really had any recently because who needed that extra stress? (How she and the others managed to survive school with the constant threat of A was beyond her) But now that she was free? She knew more was to come, it didn’t feel over. Merry Christmas, Bitches indeed.
For now though, she wasn’t worrying about that. It was some much needed boyfriend time. While she had no real opinion on the movie that was being shown, it was still something that promised to be fun and so instead. Yes. Food trucks. Not the healthiest but you could find some and usually portions were smaller. “Sure.”
“How about tacos?” Caleb asked as they walked through the options. Tacos and beer sounded pretty damn good to him. But it was Hanna’s night. Her choice. He would really be fine with whatever as long as he got to spend some quality time with her. And of course make sure no one was lurking in the corners to take her away from him. It was probably silly to be that paranoid, but living in a town with A did that to a guy.
The dreams certainly made paranoia a much more….reflexive reaction. Even though she (mostly) knew that A wasn’t around, she still found that she was uncomfortable with the network just because you never knew who was watching. It just also went against her social nature to hide away, thus it was a struggle. School had kept her busy but now with the summer, it would be interesting to see if personality or paranoia ruled. Not to mention whatever the dreams might throw at her next. Because honestly, it just kept going on. You think it can’t get worse and oh right, it does. Because A was a freaking sociopath.
“Sure, that sounds good.” It would be the only thing she’d eat most likely but hey, tacos. Tacos were good.
Tacos it was then, Caleb ordered three for himself. What? He could eat. He was a growing man after all. Well, grown, but whatever. And a beer. Just one of those for now although he had a feeling he would be going back for more. He found an empty picnic table where they could sit and eat, leading Hanna over to it. “So what are your plans for the summer? Internship?” they hadn’t discussed it much and he did have a full time job, but hopefully they could go on a trip for a few days at the very least.
One taco was enough for her. Still had to watch what she was eating. And even if she wasn’t really wanting to do modelling, the pictures had set in her mind (even more) that she needed to keep an eye on her weight. And it was something she could still use as one form of control in her life. Taco and coke in hand, she went to the table as well, thankful there was an empty one available as well. Made it infinitely easier to eat.
“Yep. Not every day of the week, but it’s still something to keep me busy.” And then trips to the beach. Hanging out with friends. Hanging out with Caleb. Just summer in general.
“You think you could take a few days off?” Caleb asked biting into his taco. “It might be good to get away from Orange County for a few days,” he could definitely use a break. The last time he had left the crazy place, the only time, it had been without Hanna. And it hadn’t exactly been by choice. No way was he going to let that happen again.
Taking a bite of her own taco, Hanna nodded. Once she had swallowed and taken a drink, she actually answered the question, “Yeah, easily. A weekend away can be done.” After all, it wasn’t like she had to work on weekends for this internship. So planning some time away? Not difficult at all. And it would be good after all the stress of the past few months.
“Great,” he grinned already finishing off his first beer. “We’ll go somewhere.” Where he had no idea. Probably not anywhere too far considering Hanna had only said a weekend. He’d have to think of and plan something. “Be right back,” he told Hanna giving her a quick kiss on the cheer before going to get another beer.
Back at the table he noticed Hanna hadn’t eaten too much. He picked up his taco giving it a quick sniff. It seemed fine to him. He took another bite to be sure. Yup there was nothing wrong with it. “What’s wrong?” he asked washing down his bite with some beer. “You don’t like it? We can get something else.”
“Cool.” Grinning up at Caleb, she nodded and had eaten some more of the taco while he was off getting another beer (they hadn’t been there that long, how was he already on a second one?) but then blinked as he asked if something was wrong.
“Nothing?” Which then was answered as he mentioned her not liking the food. “No, it’s fine.” Honestly, why was he seeming to be concerned over something that really wasn’t an issue at all.
“Okay,” he shrugged finishing off his first taco. But the time it was time for the movie Caleb had already had three beers and it didn’t seem like Hanna was eating much. But again that could just be his paranoia. He couldn’t do much about it other than keep an eye on it. “You ready for this movie?” Caleb asked getting one more beer before it started.
To Hanna, one taco was perfectly adequate for the night. Between stress and limiting her food intake, she’d managed to suppress her hunger since the dream about Mona’s death. So to her, it really wasn’t that strange to her at all. Even if she had noted that in the not so long time they’d been there, it was now at four beers. She remembered the dreams. She remembered how the two of them had turned to alcohol to deal with their numerous issues.
Had Caleb started drinking more since the Ravenswood dreams? Had she not noticed? Or was it just paranoia?
“Definitely.”
Beer in hand he walked with Hanna to get a seat for the movie. He wrapped an arm around her as they settled in. “Have I mentioned how glad I am you’re done with school,” he whispered in her ear giving her a kiss on the cheek before turning his attention to the screen.
Shaking her head in amusement, Hanna just shrugged.
“No but I’m pretty sure you managed to telegraph it just fine. But I’m glad I’m done with school for the quarter as well.” Too much studying. Too much being isolated from people in general, not just Caleb, as the need to study was important and she was determined to prove everyone wrong. Tell her she can’t do something and you sure as hell can bet Hanna would decide to prove you wrong. At least usually.
Caleb didn’t really get college or studying. He had dropped out of high school. It was fair to say that school was never really important to him, but he could tell it was to Hanna. Once his paranoia died down a bit he did his best to let his girlfriend study. Besides Caleb had plenty of other friends to hang out and drink with when he wasn’t at work. “Telegraph is too old school for me,” he teased right back. “Must have been one of your secret admirers,” he added referring to her photos.
“Ha, right. Of course. That’s who it was.” Rolling her eyes, Hanna took a sip of her coke before getting settled for the movie. So what, some random guy liked the photos. They were good photos, the photographer was skilled like that. Though she also knew it was just teasing. Secret admirers or not, it wasn’t like Hanna actually paid them much attention. She was hypersensitive and paranoid thanks to A and the dreams. But secret admirers? Please.
He didn’t get how Hanna was not aware of just how gorgeous she was. But before he could say more the movie started and Caleb certainly wasn’t one of those douches who talked throughout a movie ruining it for everyone else. So instead he just pulled Hanna closer to him, kissing the top of her head, before shifting his attention to the screen.
