Damian was familiar with Raven’s empathy links however usually it was Raven who could sense his feelings not the other way around. He didn’t understand exactly what was happening and to say that it was strange was an understatement. Had it not been Raven whose emotions he could sense, he would have thought that it was some other form of OC craziness. Sure, it was possible that that was what it was, but he felt that it being one of Raven’s links was a more realistic explanation.
Deciding that it would be better to talk about this in person than texting her, Damian headed to the coffee shop where Raven worked. Reaching the cafe, he went inside and glanced around to see if Raven was at the counter.
The latest set of dreams had been, well… Raven wasn’t sure. But it seemed she’d been correct in that she’d need to heal Damian. Which meant they now had a mental link thanks to the new rules of this set of dreams. However, she just figured it was a Dream thing. She was always aware of her people even if Dick was the only one she had an actual two way link with. And it was why she tended to end up in New York whenever she ended up doing a version of Portal Roulette.
Which meant that she hadn’t put too much thought into the fact that she was aware of Damian’s energy that morning. She figured it just came from the fact that she was actually interacting with him in the dreams this time around. It was a logical reason at any rate. So instead she just went to work when Damian showed up, during a lull. Which would definitely be beneficial though she wasn’t quite aware of that yet.
“Hey.”
Spotting her, Damian walked up to the counter and quirked a brow, quizzically, “Hey yourself. Sooooo, just curious. Why exactly would I be able to….” He stopped to consider his words for a moment, “...feel you in my head?” There really was no other way of putting it.
That was…. Unexpected. Though given the timing with the dream she had had the previous night? Really wasn’t too hard to put together just what he was talking about. Pinching the bridge of her nose in frustration, the teen let out a slow breath.
“Hell.” It was either sarcasm, or accurate. In the case of Raven, both. “Let me guess. You woke up and suddenly was aware of things I lock away and thoughts.”
No use in pretending that she wasn’t sure what he was talking about. Which meant she was going to need to put up a barrier like the one she had for Dick. It wouldn’t help in terms of strong emotion or energy spikes, but it would at least allow a sense of privacy.
Damian nodded, “That would be exactly it. Is this how it is for you all the time?” If it were, Damian couldn’t imagine how Raven didn’t go insane, “Feeling everything your friends feel?” In his case, he could only feel Raven, but he knew that she was in tune with all those who were close to her.
“The emotions and energies, yes. The actual images is only with an actual ink.” Sighed and motioned to her coworker she was taking a break to leave the counter should people show up. “This is because I healed you in the dreams after you fought Blue Beetle.”
Pinching the bridge of her nose, the teen shook her head some.
“I’ll do what I do with the link I have with Dick, mental block so that you’ll only be aware of energy spikes or high emotions.”
“Wait, are you saying that I fought Blue Beetle and lost?” Damian had been trained as an assassin. How could he lose to Blue Beetle? “How bad was it?” Sure, Damian had been stabbed by Jason and blown up in his own dreams, but at least with Jason they fought as equals. “And how does the whole mental block thing work exactly? Will I just not feel you in my head anymore or will you also not feel me anymore?” It was a little awkward knowing that Raven sensed certain things that Damian did.
“Yes. You fought Blue Beetle and lost. You managed to make the suit take over because you were being stupid.” Though that wasn’t hard to be apparently based on what he had told her and what she was seeing in her dreams. Again, it was basically the first day they actually were getting to know him. But still. “Bad.”
Then the question about the mental block thing.
“For you, it will be like before except you might notice spikes in emotion,” As if that ever happened with Raven. Crazy talk. She had everything under complete control. Always. “For me, it goes back to how it was before. Might mean I won’t always end up in New York if I portal without a destination as I tend to do more often than not now. But otherwise, back to how it was for the most part beyond you getting a chance to be aware of anything on my end.” That never happened.
Nope.
“Oh wait, I think you mentioned that before.” Damian recalled Raven mentioning the fight with Blue Beetle when she’d begun dreaming about another version of him. “That was probably a fluke. I’m usually not beaten that badly.” Yes, he was trying to save face for his dream self that he hadn’t even dreamt about.
“Wait, didn’t you say that once you portaled onto Dick? Does that mean you could portal wherever I am if you’re portaling blindly?” Now that would be interesting, especially if he were with Celaena. He had no idea how his girlfriend would react to something like that.
Damian’s attempt to save face was met with a brow quirk, though she said nothing on the matter. She really didn’t know. Or care. Maybe she cared in so much she considered him a friend and one of her people, but she honestly didn’t care if he had an ‘off’ moment in the dreams or not. He’d been an idiot and she had needed to heal him because of his stupid actions.
“It happens more often than I like. I think him and Ruby enjoy making me feel awkward.” The comment was said with a scrunch of her nose. Honestly, the two of them seemed to be more amused at her and making her feel awkward and uncomfortable as it wasn’t so unusual. “But it’s possible I guess.” Honestly there were things Raven really didn’t need to know. But portal roulette was a dangerous game. Usually because she felt awkward where she was and was just trying to get away quickly. It was a vicious cycle.
“Well, if you ever portal in and I’m just studying or meditating or something like that, it’s cool.” Damian crossed his arms over his chest, “And I’ll let Celaena know that there’s a possibility that you might randomly portal in.” He figured it was best to prepare his girlfriend just in case. Weirder things had happened, so he didn’t think she’d really be that weirded out by it.
“Probably a good idea.” Since it wasn’t like she always had control on where she ended up when she was just...trying to get out of an awkward situation. She was very familiar with New York now. And while it would be easier to remain within Orange County in her random portaling, well…. Still awkward. “So. Anything else you need to know?”
Damian shook his head in response to Raven’s question, “No, I don’t think so. I just wanted to come by and let you know what was going on before things got awkward.” He glanced towards the menu then back at Raven, “But while I’m here, I might as well get a latte.” He smirked at his friend.
“Well thanks for that.” It might have gotten awkward and while Raven had a feeling she would figure it out eventually, knowing now was definitely preferable. Besides, no one needed to know the literal hell that was her mind most of the time. It would undoubtedly drive even the strongest insane. And then he mentioned a latte and she sighed. “Fine, I guess I can get that for you.” With that, she returned to her job to make Damian a latte.
