So far the trip to Disneyland had been more fun than Finnick had expected. He’d grown up in Florida and had gone to Disney World quite often, which was much bigger than Disneyland and with parts of the park closed, Finnick hadn’t been sure they would have as much fun, but he had been wrong so far. They had gotten there early that morning to check into their hotel on the Disney property then had gone over to the Magic Kingdom. After a couple of rides, Finnick had bought Annie squeened Minnie Mouse ears and himself an ear hat. He’d been tempted to have Victor stitched across the back, but instead had opted for his name.
They had just gotten off the Carousel and Finnick was looking at the map to figure out what to do next when he glanced over at Annie and smiled, “Having a good time?”
It was nice taking an actual weekend after she had buried herself in work. Really, getting sick for so long had put a lot of things on hold and she’d finally gotten everything to a workable level again that she didn’t feel overwhelmed. Well. Okay. So it wasn’t uncommon for Annie to find herself overwhelmed by things. But when it was making jewellery? That was upsetting on a different level.
While she had been in Florida for the meet in high school, the swim team had never made it to Disneyworld so she really had no idea about the actual differences of the parks beyond basics. Disneyland was the original and had been its own park until California Adventure was added in the past decade or so. Disneyworld had the five different parks. Other than that? She had no idea on the differences.
Despite being an early morning so that they could get checked in and then to the actual park for rides and the like, Annie wasn’t as if she were tired. Okay so it was hot and there were a lot of people, but it really didn’t phase her at the moment. Instead she just smiled at Finnick and nodded. “I am.”
When Annie smiled at him all he could do was continue smiling at her. It was impossible to not smile when she smiled at you after all, “I’m glad. Anything specific you wanna do?” He turned the map so that they could both see it, not that they probably really needed the map since they had walked past everything multiple times by now.
Shifting positions so she was next to him, Annie looked over the map. They had managed to get a lot of rides done already, fast passes planned accordingly so that they weren’t running across the park for different rides. There was an art to it after all. But really, for Annie, it was just about the experience, spending time with Finnick and taking a break. There was nothing specific that she wanted to get done. Not until the night when the fireworks and lights parade happened.
“I’m good with how we’re going right now.”
Finnick had wanted to make sure that everything was perfect so that they wouldn’t be rushing around and would be able to enjoy their time and not feel like they missed anything so he had done his research beforehand and made sure they got fast passes for the high demand rides. “Alright. How about we do the castle walkthrough.” It would be a nice reprieve from the sun for a little while and one of the things they hadn’t done yet. “Then maybe we can grab lunch.”
Not rushing was always a good thing. Especially since it did get hot in the park between the area in general and then all the people. So having an actual path to follow definitely was time efficient as well. Still, it was getting to midday, which meant it was getting hotter, clouds burning off and while she had sunblock on, getting out of the sun was probably a good plan so no one got a heat stroke.
“Sounds fun.” Smiled brightly. Okay so it really was just walking through Sleeping Beauty’s castle and the story on storybook pages, but it would still be fun. And out of the sun. Then lunch, which was definitely needed.
“Looks like the wait isn’t too long either,” Finnick said as they headed towards the entrance to the attraction. It didn’t take long before they were inside, walking along and reading the story as they went. Halfway through the attraction, Finnick’s hand brushed up against Annie’s and he waited a moment before slowly lacing his fingers through her’s so as not to spook her and she could stop him if she didn’t want to hold his hand.
“Even better.” Really, she was just enjoying herself. Yes, it was nice that they wouldn’t have to wait too long to get in, but even if they had needed to, it wouldn’t have really been upsetting to Annie. Nor did she pull her hand away when Finnick’s brushed against hers. She might have blushed some but other than that, all she did was squeeze his hand as their fingers laced and continued along the path, this time hand in hand.
As they continued through the attraction, Finnick couldn’t stop smiling. For awhile now he had wanted to do this, but hadn’t wanted to spook Annie or do anything she wasn’t ready for and he was prepared to go as slow as she wanted, but holding her hand was so much better than not. He knew it sounded cheesy, but he didn’t care, “We should come back here with Peeta and the others some time. Disney wouldn’t know what hit it with Johanna.” Finnick was still getting to know Johanna in the waking world, but he knew her well in the dreams and he could just tell that they were already well on their way to being just as close.
It was nice and normal and for that, Annie was relieved. She was always so worried that she would do or say something to break the illusion that things were actually okay but no, that wasn’t the case and she was just able to breathe and be herself. Something she sometimes had thought would never be possible again.
“That would certainly be something…” Panem just taking over Disney. Well, okay, not taking over. It wasn’t like there were that many of them. But they were all very...particular. And it wasn’t as if Panem hadn’t taken over Orange County before. Admittedly it would be quite different. But still. But there hadn’t really been a Panem bonding trip since the lake so it was something to consider at least.
Panem taking over Disneyland. There were certainly enough attractions in the park that it could be used for quite the twisted arena. However, those were not the sort of thoughts that Finnick wanted to have otherwise it might cause him not to return. “Something extremely entertaining, I bet.”
“Do you think the costumed characters would know how to handle it?” Because it was a very amusing image to Annie. She knew all of them. Peeta, Johanna and her had their kidnapped survivors club and had been close even before that. Then there was Gale as well, gruff but learning to be more relaxed and happy. That combination at Disneyland where there were costumed characters… well. It would be amusing.
Finnick laughed as they reached the end of the attraction and he put his sunglasses back on, “Now that’s an amusing thought. Could you imagine the pictures? God only knows what sort of poses they’d do.” He would definitely have to plan a trip back to Disneyland with the others. It was just something that needed to be done. “Hungry? Take a break then go back out there refreshed.”
“Let me guess. I’d get sent to Ariel’s Grotto.” She had accepted her place as the Disney Princess of Panem, specifically in regards to being Ariel. She had the mermaid-tail blanket thing to prove it from the holidays. Plus her shell jewellery that she continued to make. But they were at the end of the attraction and well, food was a good idea. “Sounds perfect.”
