While there was nothing especially charming about being a werewolf, Tyler had to admit that the perks made the whole thing a little less shitty. Suddenly having super strength and super speed were great, especially since it meant he didn’t need to spend nearly as much time training for football season. His senses had been increasing steadily, and while that was mostly a good thing he kind of regretted it when he had to walk passed garbage cans.
But he hadn’t been spending much time at the gym anymore. There really wasn’t much point, since there was only a few pieces of gym equipment that provided any kind of a challenge, and suddenly being able to max out the weight machines while hardly breaking a sweat would raise all kinds of questions that Tyler had no intention of answering.
Because he hadn’t been going to the gym anymore, when he caught sight of Pietro in the hall of the University, he was pleasantly surprised. “Pietro!” he called, jogging lightly to catch up with the other man. “Hey, how’s it been?”
Pietro had noticed Tyler being at the gym less lately since he himself spent most of his free time there either working or training. He may be speedy but he didn’t have super strength so he continued to work on building up his muscles and overall body tone.
“Tyler” he replied turning and giving him a grin, “It is good to see you. I have been good, busy. And you? Too busy for the gym, yes?” Unlike his sister Pietro’s accent was still almost as strong as when he had first arrived.
“Kind of,” Tyler said, because it was true. On top of turning into a wolf once a month, working, football practice, studying for finals, and spending as much time as he could with his girlfriend and his other friends, Tyler would definitely be going insane if he was still keeping up with all his training. “I got a couple of dream gifts that made going to the gym a little useless though, if you know what I mean.”
“You have abilities?” Pietro asked excitedly, he didn’t know many people with gifts like himself and his twin. “What can you do?” he was hoping for something fun and interesting.
“Bet I could challenge you to a race,” Tyler said, grinning at the other man. He’d seen - or rather, had almost seen - Pietro running and at the time he’d been a little jealous. He wasn’t sure how well he’d fair now, but it was worth finding out.
“Oh yes?” Pietro smiled bouncing a little on his toes, he was always up for a challenge and somebody who might be able to keep up with him would be great. “Are you free now?” he asked eagerly.
Tyler pulled his phone from his pocket and took a quick glance at the time. “Don’t have to be in my next class for another two hours,” Tyler said. Pietro sure seemed happy about the challenge, and Tyler had to admit he was too. Having super strength and super speed was all well and good, but he hadn’t realized how frustrating constantly holding back when he was practicing was. “I don’t think anyone’s using the football field right now. Unless you know somewhere more private we could go.”
Pietro thought about it but couldn’t come up with anywhere, he didn’t really run privately but mostly because he was so fast nobody saw him anyway. “The football field is a good idea” he said, he was super excited because when he had to move so slowly all the time to seem normal that being able to unleash his ability was always welcome.
It wasn’t a long walk to the football field, and Tyler quickly glanced around for anyone else around. He didn’t hear or see anyone, and after taking a tentative sniff of the air he couldn’t smell anyone either.
“First person to run ten laps wins?” Tyler asked, looking around. He wasn’t sure about Pietro’s stamina, but he didn’t judge that ten laps should take more than a minute or two. Hopefully he could run longer than a couple of minutes.
Pietro nodded, “Ten laps” he agreed, it wouldn’t take him a minute to do it but he was interested to see how Tyler handled it more than how quickly he could run it himself. He himself had a good amount of stamina, it was longer durations of intense speed he struggled with, this would be a walk in the palk for him, so to speak.
Tyler grinned. “Well then, on the count of three,” he said, taking his position on the center line. “One…. Two… Three!” and then Tyler was off. To the human eye, he looked like a human shaped blur. Werewolves maybe weren’t as fast or as strong as vampires in his dreams, at least not until the full-moon, but they were still fairly fast.
Pietro watched for a moment, it was impressive but not quite fast enough. Good though, better than anybody else so far. Then he took off himself, not even a blur to the human eye. He couldn’t be seen coming not when he didn’t want to be. He was waiting for Tyler after the ten laps but he was smiling, “You are quite fast, that was good” he said honestly.
Tyler thougnt that he saw something zoom past him a time or two, and he definitely noticed Pietro standing back at the finish line before he finished his full ten laps. He did one more, before he finally came to a stop by Pietro. “Not fast enough,” Tyler said, frowning a little. But if he was honest, he hadn’t really expected to win either. “Good race though.”
“It was a very good race. You are very fast, it is a good thing from the dreams yes? It does not hurt you?” he asked because he wouldn’t want to celebrate something which caused his friend pain.
Tyler frowned a little, thinking over his answer. “The running doesn’t hurt, no,” he said. “My strength and agility have improved too, which I have to admit I’m kind of digging right now. Makes football season more of a cakewalk.” It didn’t make up for the transformation once a month, but it kind of made the whole thing easier to swallow. He supposed he could have ended up with no perks at all.
“That is very good then” Pietro said with a smile, “So many people say they have bad things from the dreams it is good to see a positive thing instead” He knew the dreams were hard on a lot of people so having something good from them was a happy occurence.
“Yeah, well, it’s not all great,” Tyler said, shrugging. “It’s just that you can’t always complain about the things that are going on, right?” Especially when it seemed like there was very little actual good that came from his dreams. “What about yours? Are they more good or bad?”
“That is a good way to look at things, too many people dwell on the dreams but there is little we can do but accept it” Pietro nodded, “Mine are not too bad so far. My sister and I were helping a bad person do bad things but we are helping the good people now so I think it will be alright”
“The good and the bad, huh?” Tyler said, and he couldn’t help a bit of an amused smile. “I wish my dreams were so cut and dry.” The girl he was sure he was falling for had - if not helped murder his uncle, had known about it and hadn’t told him. The people who he’d run with after had tried to convince him to kidnap one of his childhood friends, not telling him that she would need to be sacrificed in a ritual. Figuring out who the good guys and the bad guys were in Mystic Falls was about as easy as trying to figure out quantum physics.
“Well it is perhaps a little more complicated but it is simpler to look at it this way” Pietro admitted, “I like things to be simple” he smiled, it made things easier to understand.
“Don’t we all,” Tyler said, grinning. “Anyway, there’s nothing wrong with simple. I think there’s enough to worry about here without making dream talk complicated.”
“Exactly” Pietro nodded happy his friend agreed, “We should run again soon, I will go slower, it will be good practice”
Tyler had to remind himself not to be annoyed at Pietro’s offer of going slower. Maybe it felt like a condescending ‘don’t worry, I’ll go easy on you,’ but even he had to admit that running with Pietro again would be pretty much pointless if the guy was still this much faster than Tyler.
“I’d like that,” Tyler said. “Hard to find running buddies when you’re so much faster than all your old ones. Though, I’m sure you’d know all about that by now.”
Pietro hadn’t meant it to sound condescending, he simply meant it would be nice to run together and that he didn’t mind slowing down to do so.
“I do, my sister always hated it but now she simply says no straight away. I try to slow down for her but she is too slow. That is why you will be good, I can still go faster than with anybody else” he smiled.
Well, if there was one way to completely win Tyler back it was mentioning that he was the fastest runner that he knew. It was kind of flattering, even if Tyler knew people other than Pietro who’d no doubt be faster than him. “Vampires in my dreams are faster,” Tyler admitted. He hadn’t had a race against Stefan and Caroline, but given that vampires outmatched werewolves in that category except when there was a full moon, he could probably safely assume that they ran faster than him. “But yeah man, I need a new running buddy these days, so if you don’t mind slowing down too much for me I’d be down.”
“Perhaps with training you could become faster?” Pietro suggested, “Kick vampire butt” he grinned. And he would be more than happy to help in any way he could. “Consider me your new running buddy” he nodded decisively. It would be good to have someone to run with, and a good friend at that.
“You know, I don’t see why that can’t be the case. Especially when I’ve got you to keep up with,” Tyler said. Because why couldn’t he just train himself to run faster? That’s how things worked in the real world. “Let’s meet tomorrow then. I know some pretty great running trails.”
Pietro smiled brightly, glad his idea had been received well. He certainly thought it was possible. “Tomorrow it is. I look forward to it” he nodded.
