Katou hadn’t known Kanan was a smuggler when he’d first decided to work with him. He hadn’t even known Kanan was a smuggler when he allowed the other man to move in. The knowledge wouldn’t have made Katou change his mind though, and the hitmen who’d been sent after Kanan only served to reinforce that Katou’d made the right decision. After all, there was a good chance Kanan would be dead by now if he hadn’t moved in with the teenager.
But that didn’t mean that Katou felt at ease knowing that there was someone out there who wanted Kanan - and no, no doubt, Katou - dead and had his address. Katou was on edge, itching to end this whole thing, but Kanan’s solution was to wait until they had no information. A smart choice, no doubt, but not one that was quick enough for the impatient Katou.
He didn’t think that he’d have much trouble taking out the Old Man’s hired guns. They were all normal humans, after all, and Katou wasn’t that anymore. The only thing that leveled the playing field was their guns, but if Katou was quick enough he didn’t think that would be a problem. But training couldn’t hurt, and even if it didn’t help it was a good way for Katou to blow off some steam.
He was at the gym now, stabilizing a punching bag with his metal arm and punching it vigorously with his right. He knew Izzy was probably due to come by the gym soon, and he was looking forward to seeing her.
Things in Izzy’s life had been remarkably uneventful lately, which honestly she didn’t mind too much. Especially since her dreams were getting busier. It was nice to just be able to get through her day with work and training and maybe hanging out with friends. She definitely didn’t have anything as crazy as hitmen and smugglers in her life.
She did always like seeing Katou though, they had a good easy going friendship and she had a massive soft spot for him. Almost sisterly in a way. Smiling when she spotted him she moved his way, “Hey you” she said, “Dream issues?” she asked gesturing to the battered punch bag.
“Naw, dreams are long done,” he said. He punched the bag a couple more times before he turned, a smile on his face. “It’s real life this time. Couplea guys broke into my house the other day. Gave me a full fucking day of cleaning the next day.”
“Oh my god, are you alright?” Izzy asked looking him over, “I hope you kicked their asses” she added because they deserved to have their asses handed to them for breaking into her friends home, “You know you’re welcome to stay at mine whenever you need to right?”
Katou blinked, a little surprised at her concern. “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Of course I kicked their asses.” Well, technically he’d killed one of them on his front lawn and then proceeded to scare the piss out of the other two guys. “Thanks for the offer, but I’ve got to stay home. My roommate got real fucked up in the fight and I gotta stay home to make sure stays alright.” Mostly to make sure those guys didn’t come back, because if they did when Katou wasn’t home, Kanan was as good as dead. Not that he didn’t trust Carolina to watch their backs when she could, but, well, she was only human.
It sometimes amused Izzy that Katou was still surprised that she cared so much, but she did and always would. He’d get used to it, eventually. “Glad to hear it” she said with a nod, “Okay, well your roommate would be welcome too. Or if you ever need help with anything just let me know right?” she said, making him promise. After all that’s what friends were there for.
“I don’t think that’d work,” Katou said, shrugging and looking a little uneasy. On one hand, he wanted to tell Izzy. She was one of his best friends and he kind of felt that he needed to get it off his chest. Not to mention if she decided to take up their cause, well, they could probably use as many guns - or, in this case, whips - as they could get.
On the other hand, Kanan wasn’t paying him to make decisions. “I can’t really talk about it though,” he said, rubbing the side of his head. “What’s new with you?”
“Okay” Izzy said, the concern obviously there, “Just know that I’ll listen if you ever feel you can” She didn’t like the idea of him having to deal with things alone, especially since he’d come so far from when they’d first met.
“Honestly not too much” she said, “Everything seems to be pretty smooth right now which I’m enjoying for as long as it lasts”
“I know, Iz,” Katou said, grinning. Really, Izzy was one of the people Katou trusted most. It was kind of a bummer he couldn’t tell some of his closer friends about the things that were going down, but if there was something Katou was good at, it was keeping things to himself.
“I’d say I’m jealous, but I was actually starting to get super bored. Maybe it’s a good thing people tried to rob my house. Shook things up a bit, ya know?” he said with a wink.
Izzy nodded, as long as he knew that was all she could ask. She wouldn’t push for more, she had to trust that he knew what he could handle. Even if it did mean she’d worry about him more.
She laughed, “Well you’re finding a positive side so that’s good. I know what you mean though, I’m sure I’ll be craving action soon enough”
“You ever get the feeling like you ain’t got much purpose unless you’re fighting?” Katou asked hesitantly.
“Not so much here but in my dreams a lot of the time. We’re born to be shadowhunters, most of us accept we won’t live past our twenties” she admitted.
Katou nodded. If he let himself think about it, it would have been kind of fucked up how many people’s dreams involved people in their twenties meeting their grisly demises, but Katou tried not to dwell on things like that. “Live fast, die pretty,” he said, winking at her. “I’m gonna be graduating high school soon and then I don’t really know what I’m going to do when I’m not fighting off people’s various dream demons.”
“Shadowhunters looking better in black than the widows of our enemies” Izzy replied, “That’s one of the mottos we have” she grinned. “And you know if you need something to do I can always use a cutie taking coffee orders at the bakery”
“That is a great motto,” Katou said, bursting into a grin. “I think our motto was ‘make sure the other guys are deader than you.’” Not a real motto, though now that he thought about it he was kind of disappointed that they hadn’t been given one.
He had to laugh at Izzy’s offer. “Oh man, Izzy, I got fired after working at McDonald’s for one day. I really don’t think you want me working in your coffee dealie.” Not that it wouldn’t be fun to work with Izzy, though handing people cakes and cookies kind of seemed like a girlie job.
“I like that one too” Izzy said, okay so the widows line wasn’t exactly an official motto but it was the one she liked the most. Jace’s creation if she remembered correctly.
“Why did you get fired? I figure as long as you can work the register and smile at people you’d be great. You wouldn’t need to do the food and drink handling if you didn’t want to” she told him in case that was his concern.
Katou laughed a little at the memory. It was kind of a bummer to not even make it through one shift at McDonald’s before getting the boot, but he didn’t regret it. “There was this fucking douchebag who waltzed in and started yelling at the chick on till. Like, sixteen year old girl, and he was probably in his forties or something. So she started boo hooing or whatever because that’s what chicks do - no offence, Iz. He’s obviously a fucking winner. So when I was time to give him his food, I looked ‘im straight in the eye, spit in his burger, and handed it to him. ‘Parently that didn’t go over so well with management.” He shrugged. “And that’s about when I realized I ain’t got the patience for jobs that involve dealing with people I’d rather be punching in the face.”
Izzy actually laughed then, “Oh my god, well I can kind of see both sides to it if I’m honest but luckily we don’t have those sorts of customers at Baxter’s, everybody is really polite and our regulars are great people. We get to know them quite well” she said still smiling. It was totally the kind of thing she could see him to it, and it was actually a very sweet thing to do.
Katou was pleased that Izzy seemed to have taken his story well. He, personally, felt like he had been entirely in the right in that situation, but he knew that potential employers probably wouldn’t think the same. He had managed to get lucky, getting the personal assistant job with Kanan, but picking up the man’s drycleaning and coffee could only fill so much of Katou’s day once he didn’t have high school to worry about too.
“Well, maybe I’ll give it a shot once all my high school and other bullshit is taken care of.” Take out the leader of some smuggling ring, graduate high school, get a job selling people their fucking coffees. He couldn’t complain, but sometimes Katou wondered exactly what direction his life seemed to be taking.
“Offer is open anytime and if it doesn’t work out then at least we’ll have tried” Izzy said, she was pretty easy going in that sense. “Now do you wanna keep hitting the bag or would a little sparring help out?” she asked him with a grin, knowing that they always managed to make each other work hard.
Katou grinned. “Aw, come on Iz, do you really gotta ask that? You know I’d much rather punch a person than a sand bag.”
“Well come on then, try and hit me” Izzy grinned in reply.
