In the dreams, Magnus and Tessa had been friends for many, many years and to Magnus, who was much further in his dreams than Tessa was, it felt like they had known one another longer than the two years or so that they had actually been friends in the waking world. After Will had passed they had lived together in Paris for a time and had traveled together. Tessa had been there the first time Jocelyn had showed up at his loft with baby Clary, but Tessa didn’t know any of this yet. Tessa didn’t know she was part Warlock; at least he didn’t think she did yet. There was so much history that sometimes Magnus forgot which events came first. As much as Magnus wanted Tessa to dream about their times together, he knew that it’d mean she’d have to dream about the loss of both Jem and Will and he didn’t wish that on her. He knew it would happen eventually, but there was plenty of time for that, especially if they both turned out to be immortal in the waking world. It would be sometime still before Mangus would know for certain if he’d stopped aging or not, but he had a sinking feeling that he had and it terrified him every time he looked at Alec, because he knew what it would mean in the long run.
Putting thoughts of immortality and mortality out of his head, he balanced the two cups of coffee he’d brought, in one hand and opened the door of Tessa’s book shop. Stepping into the store, Magnus let the door close behind him and headed towards the front counter where Tessa was, “Hello, darling.” He smirked and presented her with one of the cardboard cups.
Tessa was going through some of the stock books when she heard the bell on the door of the shop tinkling. Smiling up at Magnus, she reached out and took the offered drink from him with a bright smile. “Magnus, great to see you,” she patted the chair next to her. “Come, sit down and tell me how you’ve been. I’m sorry it’s been a while, things have been really busy here lately,” she apologised.
Magnus took the offered seat after Tessa took the coffee and he crossed one leg over the other, “I’ve been alright. Getting ready for a shoot, which includes working out regularly,” Not that Magnus didn’t work out regularly when he didn’t have a shoot coming up, but when he was getting ready for a shoot he had to step up his workout routine even if he wasn’t going to be taking his shirt off in the shoot, “And what have you been up to lately? Will and Jem doing well?”
“I'm sure Alec has been helpful in that regard,” Tessa smiled. “And of course he reaps most of the benefits,” she teased, casting a sideways wink at her friend. “What have I been up to lately? Not much, just uh...getting more intimately familiar with the two loves of my life,” she grinned smugly, still feeling inordinately happy with herself for taking that last step with the boys. It had been a massive personal milestone for someone who most people considered as controlled and essentially prudish.
Magnus couldn’t help the grin that spread across his face at that tid bit of information, “Is that so? And how was it?” Magnus would be lying if he said that he hadn’t wondered how the three of them managed things when they got intimate. Neither Tessa or Jem were exactly raunchy, but he felt like Will could probably talk them into a few interesting positions. And of course it still amused him how he’d walked in on Will and Tessa the morning after when they had come to rescue Tessa from Mortmain. He was still waiting for Tessa and Will to get to that part.
Tessa couldn’t help the grin splitting her face at Magnus’ question. “It was...amazing,” she bit her bottom lip as she remembered the night, her eyes dropping from Magnus’ face as she drifted back to the night. Remembering where she was and who she was talking to, Tessa looked up at him again, colour filling her cheeks as she did. “And private,” she giggled, smacking Magnus lightly in the arm as she did. “You’re asking the wrong third of me for that information Magnus,” she winked at him.
Magnus chuckled at Tessa’s response and nodded, “Right. I’d have to ask William for those details.” Will might not go into extreme detail, but he would probably get a few more tid bits out of him. “Well, it sounds like the three of you are doing quite well. I’m happy for you.” He took a sip of his coffee, “So, I’m curious, where are you in the dreams?” It had been sometime since he’d heard where the three Victorian Era Shadowhunters were in their dreams. Jem was the one who posted about his more often, but Will and Tessa were a little more secretive with theirs.
“Well hopefully he’s retained enough of his gentlemanly memories to protect my honour and that of our lover. We wouldn’t want any scandalous details getting out, would we?” Tessa grinned at him and gently nudged him with her shoulder. At the question of her Dreams, her smile faltered slightly and she diverted her gaze to back to her tea. “My Dreams are progressing...Jem’s getting sicker and a part of me worries that the same is happening here. After we...our night…” she felt herself flush with colour as she discussed it. “He was tired. Extremely tired. I think he’s using more of the drug as well. I know he wants to be happy and healthy for as long as he can, but I’m concerned that he’s pushing himself too hard,” she admitted to him. After all, Magnus was a dear friend and he would understand.
“Oh I’m sure he won’t give away too many raunchy details.” Magnus didn’t doubt that Will would want to protect some of Jem and Tessa’s virtue. He was sipping his coffee as Tessa spoke about her dreams and Jem’s sickness in the waking world, “How can you tell if he’s taking more? Doesn’t the box magically refill itself?” Magnus knew that in the beginning they had worried about where Jem was going to get more Yin Fen when the supply he’d gotten from the dreams ran out, but from what he understood they had discovered that the box actually refilled itself. “Was this his first time as well?”
Tessa smiled at him softly, watching as she ran her finger around the lid of her coffee cup. “I don't know he's using more, it's...it’s just a feeling I have,” she shrugged, trying to explain her suspicions to her closest friend. “I think he and Will have...experimented,” she blushed, shifting slightly in her seat as she spoke.
Magnus wanted more than anything to tell Tessa what happens to Jem in the dreams. To assure her that he doesn’t actually die, but instead becomes a Silent Brother, because if something similar happened in the waking world then at least his illness would be put on pause. He didn’t know if Jem would literally become a Silent Brother in the waking world or some equivalent of it, but either way, he hoped that Will and Tessa would be spared the pain of his death. “I’m sure everything will work out one way or another.” He could tell her everything, but he knew that he shouldn’t. Tessa needed to dream it on her own, even if it was painful. He’d already accidently let it slip that she eventually had a son. “Is that so? Well, I admit, I’m not too surprised. Will can be pretty persuasive after all.”
Tessa smiled at him knowingly. “You’re hiding something aren’t you. Man of mystery,” she teased, taking a sip of her drink as she watched him over the rim of her cup. “It’s not really surprising that Will was the most...forward in that aspect,” she grinned. That’s not to say that when she had finally let go of some of her prudishness that she hadn’t been more than willing however. “But enough about me, how are things with you and Alexander?”
“What I’m hiding is nothing you won’t find out eventually.” Magnus knew it would be better that way, “I don’t want to spoil anything else for you.” He took a sip of his coffee as he listened to Tessa, a smile turning up the corners of his mouth at the question about Alec, “Alexander and I are good. Before you ask, we haven’t started making any wedding plans yet, but we have plenty of time for that.”
“So long as you have one and we’re invited. I don’t know how we’d all cope with Will and Jace’s wounded egos if you ran off and eloped without telling us,” Tessa winked at him. Will probably wouldn’t let them live it down. Ever. After all, it wasn’t that he held grudges over things like ducks or anything. “What are your thoughts on the wedding? Big and stunning?”
Magnus laughed and shook his head, “You don’t have to worry about that. We will definitely be having a wedding.” He wasn’t sure how big it would be, partly because he didn’t know exactly who Alec would be inviting from his family. He assumed he’d invite Maryse and Max, but had no idea if Robert would come nor did he know what other family Alec and Isabelle actually had. “Big or small, it will be something to remember.”
“With you involved? How could it be anything but?” Tessa asked rhetorically as she smiled at him fondly. Raising her cup in a little toast between them. Yes, Magnus and Alec’s wedding would be a marvel to behold, of that she had no doubt.
