The unexpected barbecue was going better than Veronica anticipated. Not that thought it was going to go horrible but Logan had caught her off guard when she mentioned it. Still the barbecue was casual, some of her friends brought people with them like Peggy with Steve which was totally fine with Veronica. Especially with Leon and Sharon being out to town. Mostly Leon because last Veronica knew Peggy was sort of seeing him. Not that Veronica cared who her friends dated as long as it wasn’t a serial killer… or Logan’s dad. But she was a bit curious about what was going on.
She saw Peggy was by herself at the moment, burger in hand, or well on her plate in hand Veronica made her way over. “Hey,” she greeted with about as much of a smile as you’d get out of Veronica. “Glad you could make it.”
Things were settled between Peggy and Steve and she felt good about bringing him along to the barbeque because it was about time that he got to meet some of her friends. They had a nice time at the Memorial Day service this morning and now it was all about relaxing and seeing her friends. Logan was a pretty decent grillmaster and Peggy had really taken a shine to good hamburgers from the grill during her time in the States.
When Veronica approached she had just taken a bite of her burger and let out a chuckle as she quickly chewed and swallowed, covering her mouth in the process, “Oh gosh, sorry, love. And I’m glad you invited us. It gave me an excuse to get out in the sunshine for the day. Are you enjoying it?”
“Don’t worry about it.” Veronica honestly didn’t care if Peggy had her mouth full or not. She wasn’t exactly Miss Manners. “Yeah,” she replied with a nod. “Logan kind of sprung this on me but it’s nice having all our friends together.”
Backup approached looking at Veronica with those puppy dog eyes of his. She just shook her head laughing. “I already gave you some hot dog,” she said reaching down to give him an ear scratch. “You’ll get more later,” she told him before taking a seat next to Peggy. “So, Steve huh? What happened to Leon?” Straight to the point, that’s how Veronica usually rolled.
“Logan seems somewhat impulsive, but it’s probably a good thing to get you guys out and mingling with actual people. You don’t want to be that couple that just sits around and watches law shows all day,” Peggy pointed out with an easy smile. She honestly didn’t know much about Veronica and Logan’s relationship, but they seemed to work quite well together.
“Awww, I really want to get a dog. Hello there, Backup,” Peggy cooed and turned slightly so she could pet the dog properly and held her hamburger out of reach. A blush rose on her cheeks when she was asked about Steve and Leon, “Oh gosh. I don’t know if Leon and I were going to go anywhere. Steve wanted commitment and when he mentioned it I realized that’s what I wanted too. This is finally our chance to be together after the short stick the dreams gave us.” She glanced over her shoulder to look at him with a small smile before turning back to Veronica.
Peggy was right in her assumption that they worked well together. It was a lot different than their dream selves. If only Peggy or anyone knew how often they broke up in the dreams, but still their story was epic. “Yeah that’s never going to happen,” Veronica assured. There was no chance of them turning into that couple. Veronica was far too active to sit around all day. Logan too.
“You should. Backup just showed up for me, but now I can’t imagine not having a dog.” Veronica almost laughed at Peggy’s reaction, of course she noticed the pink cheeks. “I get that, sometimes dream relationships are unavoidable.”
“We never really had pets when I was growing up, but it seems a little lonely just being by myself at the apartment, so a dog might be fun. I’m sure I could drag Steve out with me to go look at them, but he’ll probably try to get me to adopt them all,” Steve was a bit like a puppy in the first place, but she was excited about the idea of having her own pet to take care of. Someone to be excited when she came home from a long day at work and it certainly would encourage her to leave on time, “Well, I’ve been seeing Leon and Steve for about the same amount of time and I think almost 9 months is more than enough time to stop pussyfooting around and commit to someone.”
“Well now that you’re in a relationship who knows how often you’ll be in the apartment alone.” She smirked at her friend. “Steve’s big into animals?” she asked in reference to Peggy’s comment. Veronica knew a hell of a lot more about Leon than she did about Steve. “I guess an apartment full of dogs beats a pet butterfly.” Because seriously what was up with Leon and that thing. “Yeah,” she agreed. “Logan and I only dated for a month or two before I committed.” Cause let’s face it getting Veronica to commit to anyone was a big deal. Logan had pushed for it a lot more than she had.
“True, but I’m also the type that likes her independence every now and then,” Peggy retorted with a laugh, “And I’m not sure. I mean...he loves kids and things like that, so I assume he also loves dogs. It’s that Captain America thing - he has to like them, right?” And she wasn’t even going to touch Leon and the butterfly because it didn’t make much sense, but Leon’s dreams were really strange. When she mentioned that her and Logan committed so quickly she raised her eyebrows a little, “Wow, that was quick. I think Leon isn’t the type to commit right now anyway and Steve wanted to make sure it wasn’t Dream-related feelings clouding his judgement.”
Veronica definitely got that. She was the same way. She still had no idea how she ended up living with Logan. Well he had asked and she said yes. That was how. Plus she did love him and when her dreams ended he had left for one hundred and eighty days. Both Veronica and her dreamself didn’t want to be away from him for that long.
“Living with a boyfriend isn’t as bad as I thought,” she admitted even though she knew Peggy and Steve were no where near that stage. At least she assumed they weren’t since Peggy had just ended things with Leon. “Yeah, it’s weird to decipher between the dreams and real life sometimes. Especially when you’re with the same person in both places. But I like Logan a lot better here than dream!Logan.”
“I’ve done it for so long, so I think I can handle it. A dog will just make things a little more fun,” and she truly did need a reason to go home some days. It would help her start to pull herself out of her work fog if she had a dog and a boyfriend. But at least Veronica agreed that dream feelings were quite weird, “Well, we had a very brief love affair, but we never got to see where it went because he went and crashed a plane. So, it feels like this time is finally time for us to explore that. I like that he’s not exactly the same as he is in the dreams, it makes it more real. And I’m glad you like Logan a lot better in this world.”
“I think the fact that we aren’t in high school has something to do with it,” she shrugged. Logan had been a jerk in high school in both worlds. But that was beside the point. “But it’s good you guys get to explore things here,” since it didn’t sound like they had much of a chance in the dreams. “Just keep him away from planes.”
“That is incredibly helpful. School boyfriends never worked out that well,” Peggy had to admit she had her own share of awful boyfriends from her teen years. Things were far more mature now as an adult, “And yeah, I’m happy. But don’t worry, he won’t be going near any planes. Have you gotten to speak to him yet? I would certainly like you to meet him.”
Veronica hadn’t dated until college. And before Logan she only had a few boyfriends but that didn’t matter now. “I haven’t,” she said looking around to see if she could spot him. “I’ll sure I’ll meet him soon. I have to make sure he’s good enough for you,” she was only half teasing. Veronica was very loyal and extremely protective of her friends.
“Well good. I’ll make sure to drag him over to you and abandon him so you can do your worst,” Peggy leaned over and gently bumped her shoulder against Veronica’s. She was happy to have have her as a friend and it would be incredibly amusing to watch her boyfriend get the third degree, “But for now let’s finish up this food and drink a couple more beers.”
