Who: Sharon Carter and Baby When: Early May Where: Supermarket What: Random Encounter Rating/Warnings: Low/None Status: Complete!
Sharon was in the supermarket for a quick run while Viv was hanging out with her mother. It wasn’t often that Sharon had a few minutes to herself, so she was taking advantage. She headed to the market with her list in hand, ready to shop for the week’s meals along with stock up on some of the things they needed fairly desperately. Paper towels, bathroom tissue, dish soap, and diapers.
It was in the baby aisle that Sharon reached up to pull down a box of diapers, and all the other boxes on the shelves came crashing down on top of her. She gave a yelp and covered her head, wincing and frowning at the sudden cascade of boxes.
Baby hated running to the grocery store. Honestly, if she had her way she would never go shopping. Of course, she did have the option of having groceries delivered, but today it was just a quick trip to pick up a few essentials.
She'd already grabbed bread, chips, and a few other items that she'd dumped into her small cart and she was on her way to the dairy section when she heard a yelp. Her head jerked over to the side, watching the boxes of diapers as they fell upon a woman. Baby bit back a laugh, although her amusement was showing on her face as she watched for a few more silent moments. "Need some help?" She cleared her throat, moving her cart off to the side as she went to go help the poor woman.
Thankfully, the baby wasn’t in the seat in the cart. If Viv had been there, she could have been hit by boxes! That would be bad. The boxes weighed almost as much as she did! (Overstatement, the boxes probably only weighed a few pounds each, but a big cascade of them could do some serious damage to a ten month old.)
Sharon turned to look at the woman coming over to help, and was quite pink, smiling in an embarrassed way. “Thank you,” she said, accepting the help, then she bent down to start picking up the mess. “...I guess it must have been a precarious stack on the shelf?”
"Probably," Baby replied, finally letting her smile break through as she stooped down to help pick up a few boxes. "They're always in a hurry trying to get things up, or you know, some asshole picked one up and moved the boxes." She lifted a shoulder, moving to put up one of the boxes and then another.
"Are you okay though?" She asked, glancing over at her, eyes quickly roaming over her. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with her other than embarrassment.
Sharon gave a little laugh. “Some asshole like me grabs for the bottom box in the stack, you mean?” She asked, playfully, then started to organize them a little more carefully on the shelf. Hopefully, with slightly overlapping sides, they wouldn’t be as likely to topple on the next unsuspecting buyer. She gave a gentle “thanks” when the other woman helped her to right them all again.
“Yes, I’m all right. Wounded my ego more than anything else. Thankfully, I’ve got a thick skull.” Sharon lifted a hand and rapped her knuckles against the side of her head.
"Well…." Baby trailed off, lifting her shoulders with quite a comical look over at Sharon before she laughed. "But nah, I don't think that you're one of those assholes. It's possible that someone did grab from the bottom and well…" She lifted a shoulder once again and then gave a nod in Sharon's direction.
"That'll heal. By tomorrow you won't even think about it." She waved a free hand and then stood on her tiptoes to put another box up. "Least, that's how it happens with me." Of course, Baby had very little shame in her life.
“Oh, I don’t doubt that I’ll be right as rain tomorrow.” Sharon gave the other a bright smile. Then turned her attention to her cart and gave a little sigh. She just wanted to go home now. “Thank you for your help. I’ve only got a few more things on my list, I should probably get going.”
"That's the spirit!" Baby replied with a grin as she finished helping her get the rest of the diapers up. It wasn't too bad, helping people, and she let out a long breath. "Oh you're welcome. I've got to do the same thing. Hopefully you won't run into any more issues." It wasn't meant to be a jab at Sharon, she just really hoped that things went the woman's way for the rest of the day. With a small wave, Baby turned back to her cart, humming Brick House softly underneath her breath as she continued on her way.
“Fingers crossed,” Sharon said, giving the other a smile. She even crossed her own for emphasis. “Enjoy your day!” Then she, too, turned to head back to her shopping. She wasn’t humming, but smiled when she heard the other woman’s enthusiasm as they walked away.
