It'd been a good while since Sam had hung out with Lara. Hell, for that matter she hadn't really kept up with Josh lately either. Life had chewed her up and spit her out, and after the fog and the dreams, Sam had withdrawn into herself. She was trying to get back into the real world, to not let the shit that the OC threw at them on a monthly basis get to her.
She liked hanging out with Lara, and she wanted to check in on her to see what was new in her life. Sam showed up at the place a little bit early, and once she spotted Lara, she gave a small wave and headed in her direction. "Hey!" She greeted her with a smile although it didn't quite reach her eyes. "I hope you haven't been waiting too long."
Lara could understand withdrawing. It was only natural, especially with what kept happening, in or out of the dreams. But she was happy to meet with Sam again. She had precious few friends and no one local to share the good parts of her life with.
She smiled back, and almost got up. “I just got here. How are you doing?”
"Oh good," Sam replied with a small sigh of relief. She hated making people wait, and Lara had mentioned that she would probably be early. "I'm...making it. I think that's the best way to describe things." Sam took a seat, and settled in across from Lara. "What about you?" She asked, head canting slightly to the side. "How have things been going with you?"
“Some good things, some bad things.” She thought about the direction of her dreams. No matter what she did, she couldn’t escape the efficient killing machine she’d become. “Real life is going better than my dreams, at any rate. How are you though. Really? You didn’t really answer the question.”
Letting out a sigh, Sam glanced down at the surface of the table. "Some days I'm okay, other days not good. Today is a decent day. I didn't have any dreams last night, and nothing tried to kill me so I'm counting that as a win." She glanced back up at Lara with a shrug of her shoulders, "That's pretty much how I've been." The fog had been her first real taste of OC weirdness that she'd been involved with outside of the snow and Gremlins during December. It'd all been strange, but that had really frightened her. Adding in her dreams, and Sam was starting to question a lot of different things. "I'm dealing with it though. Well, as best as I can. My friend Josh is apparently having the same dreams as I am, or at least, it's the same world? I don't know what else to call it really." She shook her head with a light laugh.
Not being attacked was always a win. But even then it was kind of a lose. When you’re always looking over your shoulder how much are you really winning? Lara could emphasize. “Dreams, worlds, other realities, its all basically the same thing.” She reached across the table to put her hand over Sam’s. “There’s good and bad things about sharing dreams. Good to have someone who understands. Bad in that they have to understand it too.”
Sam nodded, willing the lump in her throat to go down as she swallowed hard. "I hate it for him. They're his sisters, and in the dreams he doesn't take it well. Hell," she shook her head, "I don't think he's taking it well here either." She worried about Josh, but there was very little that she could do in regards to everything. It wasn't as if she could wave a magic wand and make everything better, although she wished that she could for him. Sam placed her other hand on top of Lara's, giving a gentle squeeze, "Thank you though, for everything, Lara. I appreciate it."
“It’s not a problem, Sam.” Lara smiled tightly. “I’m always willing to lend an ear if you need it. I’ve seen too much not to try to be a little understanding.”
"And the same goes here. Anytime you need to talk? I'm here to lend an ear too." Sam would happily listen if Lara ever needed to talk. Pulling her hand back, Sam gave a small dismissive wave of it. "Enough depressing talk though. Anything new going on in your life?"
“A lot new going on. Mostly in the, ah..relationship front.” Lara wasn’t the kind of person to talk about that sort of thing, but she didn’t have many people to talk to about it and her OTHER Sam liked to tease her about it.
Sam's brows rose, well now this was way better than talking about other things. "Oh really?" She laughed softly, "Do tell, I want to know all the details." Sam didn't have much to talk about, she and Mike were sorta seeing each other when they had time, but it wasn't anything serious at the moment and that was completely fine with her.
Lara actually started to turn a little red, and sputtered a bit. “It’s...well it started...a few months ago? Maybe a little longer. I met her for drinks and we really hit it off.”
Sam bit down on her lower lip at the blush and sputtering from Lara. "That's great!" Sam gave a small nod of her head, a smile now on her face. She was truly happy that Lara had found a lady that she really appeared to be into. "I'm glad that you found someone." While Sam might've wanted to push for more details, she didn't want to make Lara feel too uncomfortable.
“I wasn’t really looking. It just sort of happened.” She rubbed her arm. “She’s a succubus in her dreams, but we got together before she started dreaming so I can only blame it on her natural charm.”
Sam smiled softly, "Well, I'm glad for you either way. They always say the best things happen when you're not looking for something." At least, that's what Sam had learned in her short life, and she could understand what people meant by it now. "A succubus? Wow, that's...interesting." She didn't mean it in a bad way, but that it really was interesting to her. There were all sorts in the OC apparently, and she felt as if she only knew about the tip of the iceberg.
“It is...rather interesting, and probably not all that out of the realm of my own dreams, if I was honest.” Sun goddesses, immortals, and god only knew what else. A succubus? She’d barely bat an eye at this point. “I suppose we make it work.”
Giving a small nod, Sam chuckled softly. "That's what matters. That you two can make it work that is." There were plenty of things out there, and Sam had a feeling that the psycho in her dreams wasn't the only big bad out there. There was something else going on, but she wasn't quite sure what it was just yet. "It's just interesting to me to hear and learn about all of the beings out there, you know?"
“That’s genuinely the best part. It makes one feel less alone.” She was alone in her dreams. Her Sam wasn’t here, and wasn’t dreaming, and she was grateful for that. And having people who at least could understand? Made the loneliness easier to bear.
Sam nodded in agreement, "That it does." She'd met a lot of good people on the network, and she was grateful that she joined it every single day. "Here's to hoping that things will calm down. Dream wise for us both, and that we'll get to do this more often." Sam had missed spending time with Lara, although she understood all too well how crazy life could get and sometimes the dreams did zap it right out of you. For now, however, she was going to be content just sitting there with her friend, catching up and hopefully not thinking too much more on the cold dreams she'd been having.
