Lexi had just gotten home after a long day at the Happiest Place on Earth and was planning on grabbing a blood bag and soaking in the tub for awhile. A few years ago she would have chosen wine over blood and at times she still did, but as the night had begun to wind down she had realized that she was getting thirsty and not for water. She’d fed the day before and probably could have gone until the next morning because she had her blood consumption well under control, but after such a long day, it was probably best if she drank at least half the bag tonight and the rest in the morning. She’d sleep better that way.
Dropping her bag in her room and kicking off her shoes, she crouched down in front of the mini fridge in her room and swung open the door, a frown creasing her brow almost instantly. Lexi kept a count on how much blood she had so she’d know when she needed to go borrow more and if her calculations were correct, she was missing at least two bags. Closing the door, she straightened up and moved out into the hall. It wouldn’t have been Anna, considering she was human and Caroline had her own stash at Peeta’s, so she probably wouldn’t have come to take any of Lexi’s, at least not without letting her know first.
After listening to the sounds of the house, she found that Stefan was in his room and upon approaching the door, she knocked, “Stefan? You in there?”
Stefan was, indeed, in his room. He was nursing a bottle of whiskey, lounging in his desk chair, reading a book. An actual, physical book. Stefan wasn’t the kind of guy who went in for all that Kindle nonsense. He might have been before the Dreams, and now? Now he was flashbacking to his roots. When people printed words on paper instead of glowing them up on a screen.
He looked up from the book and set the glass down. “Come on in.”
Opening the door, Lexi stepped into the doorway and crossed her arms over her chest, “I was just wondering if Caroline or someone came by and needed some blood cause I’m missing like two bags.” She already knew it probably wasn’t Caroline and far as she knew Damon wasn’t invited in nor did he drink from blood bags so she was about 99.9% sure it was Stefan, but there was still that little part that hoped it hadn’t been him. Stefan on human blood was not a good Stefan.
Stefan was caught. He’d thought he’d have time to replace what he’d borrowed from her supply. His face showed it, too. There was a flash of concern, then concentration as he tried to figure out how he was going to get himself out of this one. He knew that Lexi would be overly (and, in his opinion, unnecessarily) concerned that he was drinking from blood bags.
“Oh, that was me. Sorry, I thought I’d have a chance to replace them before you even noticed they were missing.” He closed the book to set it on the table. “I hope that’s not a problem.”
“I’m sorry, I think I might have had a little crazy in my ear.” Lexi said as she moved further into the room, “I thought you said that you took it. You who aren’t supposed to drink human blood.” Bad things could happen if Stefan started drinking human blood such as, he could become a Ripper and that was the last thing Lexi wanted. She could handle Stefan if something like that happened, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t still dangerous.
“It’s okay, Lex.” Stefan was cursing himself inwardly now. He should have lied--should have said that Damon was over, or that Caroline needed a snack. This was going to lead to the third degree, and Stefan just plain didn’t want that. Lexi was amazing at getting him back on the wagon when he fell off, but Stefan didn’t consider himself off. He was fine. This was him in complete control over his hunger. “It was only two bags. I’m not gonna lose control.”
“Only two bags, he says.” Lexi moved further into the room until she was standing in the center, “We both know that blood bags are like your gateway drug. First it’s one or two blood bags then it’s one or two necks then you’re full out ripping peoples’ heads off. And that’s really hard to cover up in a place like California. Mystic Falls, maybe, but not Orange County.”
“We both know that’s it’s a gateway drug for the Stefan from the Dreams. But in case you haven’t noticed, I’m not him.” Stefan stood from his chair and moved a couple of steps forward to talk with her eye to eye. “I’m in control. Trust me.” It was said with every ounce of sincerity. Stefan truly believed he was in control.
“It’s not that I don’t believe you, Stefan, but the dreams influence us more than we think.” Lexi wished that she could take Stefan’s words at face value, but she’d seen him as a Ripper in the waking world and knew what he was capable of in the dreams and it worried her, “I’m just looking out for you, Stefan.” And everyone else, but she left that part unsaid.
“I know you are.” Stefan meant the words. He trusted Lexi, he just felt that her worry wasn’t founded. He was in control. The hunger wasn’t that bad, and he wasn’t feeding off people. Just blood bags. No big deal. “But trust me on this one. I’m all right. I promise.”
Lexi sighed, knowing that as much as she was worried about Stefan, pushing him would only result in pushing him further towards what he was doing, “Fine. But promise me that you’ll let me know if you start to feel like you’re losing control of it.” Sure, she couldn’t probably chain him up in the basement by force and let him desicate to get the human blood out of his system, but she didn’t want to go that route like when she helped Elena get Stefan off the human stuff when she was a ghost, “Anyway, I’m starving for actual food. Interested in a pizza?”
“I promise.” Stefan was a man of his word. He knew that he would send her a message as soon as things started to go out of control. He didn’t see it happening anytime soon, but the promise had been made. He would absolutely be turning to his best friend should need be. “Pizza sounds great,” Stefan replied. He turned to head out of his bedroom, wrapping an arm around Lexi’s shoulders to drag her along with him. “I’m thinking anchovies.”
Lexi made a face at Stefan’s suggestion, “What does it say about me, that I’ll drink blood, but won’t eat anchovies?” There were some things that Lexi had to draw the line at and that was eating anchovies, “But I’ll compromise and we’ll get anchovies on half.” She left the room with Stefan to head into the kitchen where they could find a menu. She could only hope that Stefan would decide to switch back to animal blood soon, but until then, Lexi wouldn’t push it unless things got bad.
