Audrey was lounging on the sofa, half-asleep. The television was on commercials, and for a moment Audrey couldn’t even remember what television show she’d been watching. Her hand was resting on her tummy, and she could feel the baby move. Then her eyes opened a little wider and she sat up just a bit.
“Merlin!” Audrey called out, startling Ben, who was stacking blocks on the floor in front of the sofa. “Merlin! Come here! I can feel the baby move!”
Once Ben got over his shock he began banging his blocks together excitedly since his mum seemed to be so excited too.
Merlin rushed into the room and dropped down in front of the sofa, “Are you okay?” he asked, not really registering what she’d said just that she’d called him urgently.
“C’mere!” Audrey sat up just a little, onto an elbow. She was afraid if she moved too much, the baby might move, too, and then they might not be able to feel it from the outside. Her free hand lifted to wave at Merlin, frantically. “C’mere! Hand… Hand right here!”
Once Merlin was close enough, she grabbed his hand and pulled him closer so she could press it against the side of her belly. For a minute, nothing happened. Then the baby moved under his palm.
Merlin was smiling at her but when he felt the movement it turned into a bright happy grin, “Hey baby” he said to her belly, “This is daddy, I can feel you”
And the baby moved again. Audrey laughed. “C’mere, Bennie!” She called out to their first born. Maybe Ben could come and feel it, too?
But the toddler didn’t move from his spot. He was far more interested in the blocks than he was in whatever Mommy and Daddy were doing. Though, they did look happy.
Audrey lowered her hand to cover Merlin’s on her belly. “What do you think? Boy or girl? I guess we’ll find out soon, if we want to.”
“Apparently playing is more interesting than his baby brother or sister” Merlin said but it was with affection and slight amusement.
“A girl would be nice, one of each but a boy would be just as good. You wanna find out?” he asked her.
“I know it sounds cliche, but I really mean it when I say all I want is a healthy baby,” Audrey sighed softly and closed her eyes. It was nice to have Merlin so close, to feel the baby moving in her belly. “...I would like to know, I think.”
“Then we’ll know” Merlin said, “And it’s not cliche, I will be happy too. No matter what, after all we have a gorgeous boy already. We know whatever we have he or she will be incredible”
“I love you,” Audrey said, then leaned forward to steal a kiss from her husband’s lips. “So much.”
“I love you too” Merlin said, laying his hand on her cheek and stroking his thumb over her cheekbone.
Audrey leaned forward to rest her forehead against his. She closed her eyes and enjoyed that moment with her husband.
