It was a little strange to be hanging out on his own with Caleb, but he had felt bad for the guy who had shown up a little tipsy to his bakery. He had been in his shoes once upon a time when he was mad at the world for his injury. So, he had made a point to invite Caleb to meet him for coffee or something and they could talk and get to know each other a little since they barely knew each other. Yep, it was basically a man-date. He had picked a nice cafe that he had been to a few times and decided that the two of them would sit outside.
They had been having a good conversation, but Peeta was hearing some strange noises off in the distance. He lifted his cup to his lips and made to take a sip when he saw someone running at the end of the block. That really wasn’t a good sign. And it got even worse when he saw someone in white body armor that looked really familiar. “Is that --- “ he lowered his cup and squinted, “is that a Stormtrooper?” His eyes went wide in surprise before turning to look at Caleb to make sure he wasn’t insane.
Peeta wasn’t the only one is was strange for. Caleb didn’t make it a point to hang out with his girlfriend’s friends’ boyfriends. Okay so maybe he did in the dreams but that was slightly different. Plus Peeta seemed like an okay guy, he hadn’t ratted Caleb out to Hanna as far as he knew. And the guy was actually his age, most of Caleb’s friends were either older or girls. And he had been struggling a bit lately with the dreams and ghosts and just all of it though he would never admit that. But he did agree to meet Peeta for coffee.
He was enjoying their talk so far which he hadn’t fully been expecting when Peeta’s eyes widened. Caleb whipped his head around to see what the guy was looking at. “Shit,” he replied his own eyes probably just as wide. “I think it is,” he stood up to get a better look. There was still a chance this was a dude in costume or a girl. But knowing this place he wasn’t so sure. “You think it’s real?” his question was answered when the stormtrooper pulled out a blaster rifle. Yeah, that was definitely not a prop.
“Oh shit,” Peeta gasped when he saw the blaster pulled out. That wasn’t good. Even if they were rumored to not be able to hit the broadside of a barn armed Stormtroopers were still dangerous, “I don’t really have anything on me to fight them, but we could try to take a couple down and steal their blasters? It looks like they’re attempting to invade or something.” It didn’t make much sense as the Stormtroopers wandered down the street and were shooting people and trying to round them all up for something.
Caleb didn’t have anything on him either. He did have a gun, back at his apartment, but maybe he should make a habit of carrying it around with him with how crazy this place was. Although the fact that he had been shot with his own gun in the dreams wasn’t exactly encouraging. “Seems like the best idea.” The only idea really. Caleb was usually good with his fists but he didn’t think punching would work with their armor. “I’ll tackle you grab the blaster.” Hopefully they would be too stupid to realize what was happening, or at least to respond to it. They drew nearer and Caleb took off jumping on one of the Stormtroopers bringing him to the ground.
“Good plan,” Peeta agreed to it because it would be the simplest way to do it. He was more than happy to grab a blaster and it would be reminiscent of military training. He made sure the two of them were keeping a cover as they made their way towards the Stormtoopers and soon enough they were within reach. After Caleb took off Peeta kept watch until the white armor clad man was on the ground and he rushed into wrestle the blaster out of his hand. He quickly shot the Trooper and hoped that it was set to stun and not kill. He had no idea how to quickly, but his reflexes were still there as he turned to take down another one and rushed over to grab the blaster and tossed it to Caleb, “Hopefully they’re stunning.”
Getting the first blaster was easier than expected. Then Peeta managed to get another and Caleb had no problem catching it. He did have somewhat good reflexes. “I don’t see it’s ghost,” Caleb replied to let Peeta know the Stormtrooper was probably still alive. Although Caleb could really care less if they died or not. He shot another one with his blaster missing on the first try unlike Peeta, Caleb didn’t have any military training. The Stormtrooper shot back missing Caleb as well. On Caleb’s second try he managed to hit the Stormtooper knocking him down.
Well, not seeing a ghost was a good thing. They must be set to stun, which was good because Peeta didn’t really see the point in killing random people from the Dreams. “I think if we manage to clear out this area then we’ll be fine,” he didn’t want to stay and fight forever, but they had to make sure at least the area they were in was secure for civilians. He watched Caleb fight and shot down a few more Stormtroopers before trying to cross back over towards Caleb. And of course when his back was turned was when he didn’t notice one that hadn’t been properly stunned raise its blaster and send a shot at him. It grazed his side and he stumbled forward, “shit.”
They seemed to be doing a fairly good job clearing out the area. Caleb’s aim got better with each shot and he wasn’t missing anymore, unlike the Stormtroopers. Man these things were stupid. Caleb still wasn’t seeing any ghosts. Which was good because it probably would distract him. But he honestly had no idea if he would see their ghosts. It was all still so new to him. Unfortunately when he took a second to think about it Peeta had been hit. “Shit,” Caleb echoed rushing over to him, shooting a Stormtrooper on his way. “Are you alright?” stupid question.
It didn’t hurt like being shot with a bullet, but it stung like crazy. He placed his hand on his side as he tried to make a move for cover so he could assess the damage. He lifted up his shirt to see the burn on his side and hissed again as he adjusted his body. “Um, it’s not horrible. Not great either. I might have to call in a surrender and head back to my place to get Caroline’s help with the healing.” That part would suck and he knew he was in for an earful when he got home, but at least it wasn’t severe.
“I think when someone gets shot it’s time to call it quits,” Caleb agreed using the blaster to shoot that last two of the Stormtroopers. At least the last of the ones that were near him. He wasn’t even going to ask about how Caroline was going to heal him. He didn’t think he wanted to know just how all the vampire stuff worked. “Come on,” he said lending his shoulder for Peeta to lean on if needed. “I’ll drive you home.”
