Who: Magnus Bane and Zatanna Zatara When: Backdated: End of April Where: OC Magic Guild What: Talking about Magnus' possible immortality Rating/Warnings: Family Friendly Status: Complete
Over the last couple of weeks Magnus had begun thinking about the fact that there was a very good chance that he was Immortal and what exactly it meant. In the dreams it had been one of the reasons he and Alec had broken up and while he didn’t see that happening in the waking world, it would complicate things in the long run. The last thing he wanted was to watch Alec grow old and eventually die while he stayed the way he was. There was still no way to know for sure that he was actually immortal, but considering the fact that most things from their dreams had bled over, there was a very good chance that he was in fact immortal.
He knew he and Alec would have to talk about it eventually since it was the lack of talking about it that had led Alec to do what he had, but they were happy right now and Magnus didn’t want to bring it up. Instead, he’d decided to go to the Guild and take some of his frustrations out in one of the training areas. Target after target, Magnus took down, shooting blast after blast of blue magical energy from his hands.
The Guild’s HQ was a good place to let off steam - Zatanna had done it herself sometimes, or she would use the space to meditate, and she encouraged others to do the same. After all, that was the whole purpose for its existence, no? And to learn from others, to grow and change, and develop the gifts that had been given to you - oftentimes involuntarily, as a result of realities colliding and merging slightly. Many of them didn’t ask for this - if she could help smooth things over somehow, she would be content.
She was at the Guild stocking up on a few things - it was the hands on rooms, like for potion-crafting or alchemy, that required more upkeep. And she tried to practice her own potion skills when she could; since there was no current magical crisis on the horizon, it gave her some time to switch from occultism to simply using the space for what it was meant for. Barefoot, because she felt most comfortable that way, she wandered the tunnels below the earth and peeked into one of the well-fortified (with barriers and other means necessary, so it wouldn’t collapse) practice spaces.
The light show, like fireworks almost, was intriguing. Zatanna watched from the entranceway for a moment to wait for a good moment to speak up; she didn’t want to interrupt Magnus. “Something on your mind?” she asked, since he appeared to be focused and diligent about hitting things. It wasn’t really like him, or so she thought.
No, Magnus didn’t usually practice using this aspect of his magic with such intensity unless there was some sort of threat as a result of OC craziness so the fact that he was doing so this particular day when all was relatively quiet on the outside was an indicator that something was indeed on his mind. Blue light still crackling around his fingers, which were adorned with rings, as per usual, Magnus turned at the sound of the familiar voice. He easily could have lied and told Zatanna that he had simply decided to step up his practice, but in the end he decided that it might be better if he talked about what was bothering him with someone removed from the situation, “You could say that.”
Unlike most days, Magnus was relatively dressed down. His jeans were fashionable zipped in various places, but his t-shirt lacked any sort of embellishments and he wore no makeup or jewelry, but his thick black hair was still perfectly styled so it showed that Magnus hadn’t put quite as much thought into his appearance as he did on most days. “What brings you here today, Z? I didn’t bother you, did I?”
“Of course not,” Zatanna shook her head, stepping a little further into the room. Her dress was perfect for the arrival of spring, breezy and the typical boho style for the Mistress of Magic, halter and sleeveless - it rippled around her as she moved. “I just came for some practice myself, with the potion-making supplies mostly. I’m probably due for a break though. I could make some tea?”
One shapely eyebrow lifted curiously. She wouldn’t pry if Magnus didn’t want to talk, but perhaps it would help - sometimes, that was what you needed. Just to get things off of your chest. “And you could tell me what’s on your mind. No judgments.” Nor would she offer any advice unless asked - if he simply wanted her to listen, she could do that too.
It must be big, if he had forgone the eyeliner. He had such pretty eyes too, she liked them best when they were their natural color. All reminiscent of ancient Egypt and pharaoh's gold.
These days Magnus only glamoured his eyes when he had a shoot or meeting or something along those lines. Otherwise, anyone who was a dreamer knew things like this happened and with others he could simply say they were contacts. In fact, Magnus enjoyed the various reactions he got to his cat eyes.
“I’d love some tea. Thank you, Z.” Magnus could do with a break and tea sounded good to him. Some of the best conversations were had over tea after all. “I should probably practice my potion making at some point. Haven’t needed to make any potions yet, but in the dreams I do it on occasion.”
“Oh, really? What kind of potions do you make there?” Zatanna sounded curious, and she canted her chin toward the hallway where she led them. Down the stone corridors lined with torches for light, past the sconces, and her final destination was the library - one of her favorite sanctuaries down here; it was large, books on shelves for what seemed like miles (this was the collection from her dream manor, Shadowcrest, along with other readings she’d acquired during her stay in Orange County), and there were tables and a couch or two to compliment the wine racks. Being that the Guild was once an underground wine cellar, and thus expanded on, it meant that they wouldn’t run out of vino anytime soon.
However, she had cups and loose leaf teas at the ready. Sometimes you just wanted something a little warmer, a little more soothing. “Have a seat, and what sort of tea tickles your fancy today?” Boiling water was easily taken care of - she simply touched the kettle and murmured a few backward-speak words, and soon it was whistling at them.
“Usually it’s whatever’s needed at the time. People will pay me to make them potions and things in the dreams. So I don’t focus on them a lot.” Magnus hadn’t had any need for any potions in the waking world yet, but it was never a bad idea to practice just in case. He followed Zatanna down the hall to the room she’d set the tea up in, “That’s a nifty trick. I have a tendency to simply summon tea or coffee from somewhere else.” Before getting involved with Alec, in the dreams, that was primarily how he’d gotten his coffee, but after the Shadowhunter had begun staying at his loft and expressed his distaste in Magnus simply borrowing things like coffee from somewhere else, he’d gotten a coffee maker. In the waking world, he didn’t summon things a lot, but it was still extremely useful in certain situations.
Sitting down, Magnus thought for a moment as he leaned back in the chair, “What kind do you have?” Magnus wasn’t usually very picky when it came to tea, but there were certain ones he needed to be in the mood for.
Summoning was certainly a useful trick too - but it was true, whatever you summoned had to come from somewhere. Everything did, and there was always a price for magic too - even if you didn’t pay it immediately, you would at some point. In some way. That was just the way of things.
“It’s easy to go down a slippery slope that way,” she chuckled gently. “I’d be afraid I’d summon everything and forget what it was like to actually do things.” Various jars were obtained, featuring the tea selections - Zee boasted a whole variety, as she was something of a connoisseur. “I favor Middle Eastern teas,” she said. “So I have black tea with cinnamon and rose, mint tea, Turkish apple tea, and another black tea with cardamom and cloves. That one’s from Yemen, it’s one of my favorites.”
“That’s more or less how I lived in the dreams, before I met Alexander. He reminded me what it was like to be human.” Magnus had lived so long and surrounded himself with mostly other Warlocks and Downworlders so using magic to do things just came naturally. There had been humans and Shadowhunters in his life before, but before Alec and his friends it had been mostly Ragnar, Catarina and Tessa. “I’ll have the Turkish apple.” He’d never had it before, but it sounded good and Magnus was all about trying new things.
“That’s very sweet,” Zee smiled - she’d heard Magnus talk about his fiance before, and she was pleased that he was so happy. He deserved something nice, and someone wonderful in his life. “Have you started planning the wedding yet?”
Turkish apple it was, and she fixed them both some - carefully pouring the fragrant tea into the delicate, colorful cups, and finding the additions in case he wanted to put anything else in there. Honey, or cream, but Zatanna tended to think that this particular kind was fine on its own - the flavor of apple most prominent of course, but also hints of cinnamon and cloves. Then she sat down across from him, wrapping her hands around her own cup to let the steam waft upward and tickle her nose - nothing like a soothing cup of tea sometimes, right?
Magnus smiled and thanked her as he picked up his own cup when it was presented to him, “Not yet. We actually haven’t talked much about it since we got engaged.” Part of it had to do with the fact that Alec hadn’t been ready to tell his parents yet because of the way his father had reacted when Alec had brought Mangus home for the first time and Magnus hadn’t brought it up much as a result of his mind being on the whole possibility of being immortal. Regardless of whether or not he was actually immortal, Magnus knew that he still wanted to marry Alec, but they would need to talk about the immortality thing before really starting any wedding planning.
“Oh?” Zatanna lifted an eyebrow. That was curious - maybe they weren’t in any rush, but still. She would have imagined that some talk of the upcoming nuptials (had they even set a date yet?) must have transpired. Then again, she had never been engaged, and didn’t have personal experience to base things off of - every couple was different, after all.
She sipped her tea, concern reflected back in the blue velveteen of her eyes. “What’s the matter, Magnus? Does it have to do with the wedding? Obviously there’s something bothering you.” Or else he wouldn’t have come to a fortified space to hit targets with magic as a way to vent stress and frustration.
Magnus sipped his own tea, contemplating for a moment before looking back up at Zatanna, yellow meeting blue, “In the dreams I’m Immortal. I’m over three hundred years old. I’ve seen people I care for grow old and die.” He thought of Will, Charlotte, Henry and Etta. There had been others of course, but those were the ones who stood out to him, “My magic has bled over here. My warlock marks have bled over here. I can only assume that my immortality will bleed over, if it hasn’t already.” He’d have no way of knowing for sure whether or not he had stopped aging for a few more years, “In the dreams I stopped aging around nineteen. I’m twenty one now.”
He dropped his gaze to the contents of his tea cup as he continued speaking, “I’m afraid of what will happen if I do become Immortal. I don’t want to lose Alexander.” That thought terrified him much as it did in the dreams and it was the reason it had taken Jace and Catarina talking sense into him to go after Alec in Idris.
Zee hummed in understanding. Some thought immortality was a blessing - a wonderful thing, to never die, because how perfect would it be, knowing you had freedom ahead of you to be there as the future unfolded and history was made? But it was more like a curse, when you thought about it. There was nothing wonderful about watching your loved ones wither away and die.
“Well, let’s see...” She tapped her fingers carefully on the sides of her cup, thinking. “There might be a spell out there to do away with immortality. I know that the ancient Egyptians have used such things, so it could be a matter of finding the right words. Or perhaps - “ Now, she didn’t mean to pry, only be of assistance, so she was just firing off ideas, “...if there is not a way to do away with your immortality there should be a way to grant Alexander immortality in turn. An amulet, that I know of. This was achieved by someone in my own dreamworld.” You could do most anything in Gotham, in that city where the ground was soaked in blood and built on a graveyard.
She made sure to add as a disclaimer, “It would require discussion with him first, of course. But I will help you if I can.”
Magnus quirked a brow at Zatanna, “A spell to take away immortality?” That reminded him of the reason Alec had been meeting Camille in the dreams and the real reason they had broken up; because Alec had wanted to find out if there was a way to take away Magnus’ immortality, but had done it behind his back. “As much as I’m worried about becoming Immortal, I’m not sure I’d want to take it away. It’s complicated.” However, he did wonder if in the waking world Alec would consider Immortality. In the dreams, he didn’t think Alec wanted that, but the dreams were a different world. “I’d definitely have to talk to him about that. I wouldn’t make him do something he didn’t want to, but it is something to think about.”
Either way, there shouldn’t be any sneaking around or keeping secrets - that just led to problems down the line, so Zee was glad to hear that Magnus would at least broach the subject with his fiance. “It’s a lot to consider so he may need some time,” she lifted one shoulder in a shrug. “But I will research what went into that amulet, just in case. I’m sure I could replicate it. As long as he wears it, the powers that it grants will be in effect.”
It wasn’t exactly a simple solution, but then again, this wasn’t a simple problem. One half of a couple being immortal and never aging while the other person did, well, that was also going to cause problems at some point. She hoped it worked out for them and like she told Magnus, she’d do whatever she could - that was just in her nature, to want to help friends.
