So, Kate was on a bit of an “I’m not all brawn and no brains” kick lately. She’d gone to a bookstore to start reading again, like she did when she was in college, and she’d googled local art galleries and museums. As much fun as it would be to drag Clint along, she wanted to scope out some of these places first. Just… y’know… so she wouldn’t make a fool out of herself if she knew nothing about the art. Or whatever.
So she headed to the first one on the list and poked her head around.
Vanessa always encouraged everybody who came into the gallery to look around and enjoy the work of the artists. She didn’t believe you had to be a certain level of intelligence to like art, you just had to find the right art which spoke to you.
Moving towards the young woman she smiled, “If you need anything or have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask”
“Oh, thank you,” Kate said, turning to the woman who approached her, and broke into a smile. “This is a really wonderful gallery. Have you worked here long?” She wasn’t sure how long the place had been here, and was wondering why she hadn’t been there before.
“Thank you” Vanessa said, “I arrived and took over in October last year. It needed a bit of a make over so I closed for a little while and we re-did the decoration and layout of everything. I wanted to get involvement from the local art students, showcase their work too” She was proud of that, helping young rising artists was a passion of hers.
“That’s cool.” Kate responded, looking around the room. “So, is there stuff in here that’s done by art students? Which are the ones by students, and which are the--” she stopped herself before she said real. “--professional ones?”
Vanessa gave a knowing smile, “The students work is displayed just through here” she gestured down a corridor to another room. The gallery didn’t feel too closed in and that had been Vanessa’s aim, open free space to allow the art to be enjoyed was the ideal.
“I think I’d like to see that.” Kate said, and leaned over to look down the corridor. “I mean, I want to see everything, I think,” she added, giving the other woman a smile. “Is there a piece that you would recommend? I mean, what can I not miss?”
“As you should” Vanessa said, “But I do think it’s definitely one section not to miss. It’s interesting to see how the students tackle the same subject in different ways” she gave a little chuckle, “Ah well now that all depends on taste. What I may find entrancing you may find dull. That is the excitement of art. It is always in the eye of the beholder”
“Yes, that’s very true.” Kate said, smiling brightly. “I guess I’ll just start wandering, then, and see what tickles my fancy.” She turned to head around the outside of the art gallery, looking at the walls. She stopped in front of a painting nearby and cocked her head to the side as she examined it.
“Please enjoy your time here and if I can be of any assistance don’t hesitate to call on me” Vanessa said leaving the young woman to enjoy the artwork.
