Capable loved her job at the bookstore, she regularly read to the children there and Tessa had set up different age groups for different days which was nice. She was becoming very good with their book search engine and ordering from their suppliers too. She was almost always smiling and she’d discovered a passion and love of reading. All in all it seemed she had found the perfect job.
When she heard the tinkle of the bell over the door she made her way out from the stacks, “Hello welcome to Much Ado About Books, if I can be of any help just let me know”
Kate didn’t have a whole lot of time for reading, but she felt like she wasn’t up on the times… right? She’d read a whole lot when she was in college, and since then? She’d fallen out of the habit. Working two jobs, watching tv, spending time with friends, hanging out with Clint… it took up a lot of her time. But it was time to get back to her intellectual roots.
So she headed to the bookstore she walked by all the time, and broke into a smile when she stepped inside. “Thanks,” she said, glancing around. “Just looking for something interesting to read.”
“Well I can help if you’d like. What genre do you enjoy the most?” she asked, they had a rather large collection of all kinds and Capable was pretty good with most apart from horror and non-fiction. She wasn’t great with those.
“Um… Maybe historical fiction?” Kate asked. “I seem to remember enjoying reading that sort of thing. It’s been years since I’ve read for pleasure. I just… fell out of the habit,” she added, sheepishly.
“Oh I read my first ever one of those a couple of weeks ago” Capable smiled, “We have a good selection here. Don’t worry, it’s a difficult thing to fit in with all the technology around too” she said kindly before leading Kate towards the historical fiction area of the store.
“That’s very true. I just can’t imagine reading on a tablet. Because I miss the feel of paper between my fingers. Maybe I’m old fashioned that way.” Kate said, and shrugged her shoulders. “...I’m interested in seeing what you’ve got here. ...I could also be shown the romance section.” She said, a little sheepishly.
Capable smiled, “I can’t either. I like books, it’s more satisfying somehow reading an actual book” She nodded enthusiastically, “I can definitely help you there, I’ve read all kinds of romance books” she didn’t want the girl to think there was anything wrong with reading romance. Capable thought everybody should be proud of reading what they wanted to.
“I haven’t read a book cover to cover in a long time, but I remember well the feeling of accomplishment that comes from getting to the last page of a good book.” Kate said. She broke into a bright smile. “Show me your best romance books. I think that’s a better place to start.”
“Oh it’s a wonderful feeling. I love it, especially if the story has been really good” Capable agreed, before nodding, “Follow me and we’ll enter a world of happy ending and romantic gestures”
Kate gave a laugh, then waved her hand. “Lead the way. I’ll follow willingly.” She grinned, then followed after the other woman across the store.
Once they reached the romantic section Capable pointed out some new titles as well as ones she personally recommended. “It’s such a wide genre” she smiled, “Like you can have elements of fantasy, crime, horror but the central theme is still romance”
“I like it.” Kate said, nodding, as she glanced at the titles and the covers. “And these paperbacks aren’t all that expensive, so I can grab a few of them for the same price as the hardcovers.” She stepped forward to grab a couple of the titles that the woman recommended, and another one with a half-naked dude on the cover.
Capable nodded, “And they all sit on the shelf together nicely. I like hardbacks but they can make things look untidy if you only have one or two in a series as hardbacks” possibly a little of her OCD was showing through there so she smiled sheepishly.
“I don’t have too many shelves of books right now.” Kate said. “I mean, that’s one of the reasons I’m here. I should probably have kept more of my books and things from when I moved out of the dorms, but I gave it all up so that I could move more easily. Less stuff, less stuff to move. You know?”
Capable nodded, “I know when I first came here I had nothing but slowly I’ve acquired things. More books than anything now I work here” she grinned. The room she shared with Furiosa was starting to look like a library.
“I can only imagine how dangerous it would be if I worked at a bookstore. I’d probably spend my entire paycheck on books.” Kate said, grinning softly. “And then I’d be stuck reading them all day.”
“I read a lot” Capable nodded, “And my room is starting to be taken over by books but I can’t bear the throw any of them away” It turned out after having nothing for so long Capable was a bit of a hoarder.
“I do like giving away books, too,” Kate mused, turning with her purchases to head to the front of the shop and pay for them. “After I’ve finished a good book… I rarely read things more than once or maybe twice. Then I can pass them on to a friend.”
“Oh that’s a good idea” she said helping her out by taking a couple off her pile and carrying them, “Maybe I should try that. It might mean I can get into my room easier” she joked.
Kate chuckled. “If you’re looking for someone to trade books with, I’ll leave you my email address.” She was really excited about getting back into the thick of novel reading again. She followed the other lady to the register. “So, what’s my damage?” It was hard wandering through a bookstore and wanting to bring everything home with her.
“Sure, that would be great” Capable nodded, grabbing a pen and paper so she could do that. “My name’s Capable by the way” she said with a smile as she totted up the total and told her what it was, “I added a 10% discount since you’re a new customer, would you like a loyalty card? You get sent discount codes and information about new events and things”
“Hello, Capable,” Kate said. It was an unusual name, but hey, stranger things had happened in Orange County. She pulled out a credit card and grinned. “Sure, I’d love one. I’m Kate, by the way.” She held out her payment card. “Thanks for the discount. This shop is great.”
“Great” Capable said, taking the payment card and getting Kate to fill out the form for the loyalty scheme, “Oh you’re welcome, Tessa - she’s the owner - believes in encouraging enjoyment in reading and rewarding that”
“Well, tell her I said thank you.” Kate said. She pocketed her wallet once more, and then accepted the bag with her new books in it. She was going to have a good time reading, though she might have to cover one of the romance novels with scrap paper. Clint would take the mickey if he could see the shirtless man with the long, flowing locks. “And thank you for helping me pick these out.” She added, then gave a wave as she headed for the door.
“I will do” she said with a smile, “I hope you enjoy them, do let me know what you think” she added giving a little wave.
