Thank God. Stefan had a really rough night the night before--what with the full moon, and Tyler’s escape and everything. There was a tussle, and Stefan thought he’d been bitten. Or maybe he had been bitten, but this was the real world, right? The craziest of the Dream Shit didn’t cross over. ...right?
Anyway, after such a rough night, Stefan decided to put the hot tub on, and invite Lexi and Anna to go for a soak. Anna was still struggling in someone else’s body, so that left Stefan and Lexi together on their own for the hot tub.
Stefan pulled on his trunks and headed down to the backyard with a towel draped over one shoulder, barely covering the spot on his back where he may or may not have been bitten.
Anna’s body switch hadn’t exactly surprised Lexi when she’d realized what was going on and part of her thought it was a little bit amusing, but she had told Anna that she was there for her if she needed any help or anything at all. When Stefan had asked if she wanted to hang out in the hot tub, she said yes, because she would never turn down time to hang out with her best friend. Sure, they lived together, but that didn’t mean that they always had time to spend together since they both worked and now that Stefan didn’t work at Disney with her any longer they had different hours.
Putting on her own bathing suit, Lexi pulled her long blond hair back into a ponytail, grabbed a towel and headed out to the backyard, “Know what would make this even better? Drinks.”
“It’s like you read my mind.” Stefan replied. He’d had a rough night the night before, and something tasty and alcoholic would absolutely help. Rubbing one of his eyes, he stifled a yawn. “Late night last night. Do we have any of that champagne left?” They could have mimosas. Or just straight champagne. Either would be fine with Stefan.
“I think we do. I’ll go check.” Lexi put her towel down then headed back into the house to check on their alcohol stash. Just like she thought, they had plenty of champagne and orange juice. She made two drinks then brought them back outside to Stefan, “Mimosas, at your service.” She said, holding one out to Stefan.
A little alcohol, sitting in the hot tub, spending time with his best friend… it was the perfect day. Especially after following the night he’d had last night. He hadn’t yet told Lexi about Tyler, and was thinking now was a good time to do just that. But a sip of the drink was definitely due first. “Mimosas. Perfect.” He reached forward to take hold of the glass, then lifted it as if in a toast.
Lexi smirked as she held her glass out for a toast, “To BFF time.” Spending time with Stefan was one of Lexi’s favorite things to do and she was still extremely glad that he had come home. “Now let's get to the relaxing.” She took a sip of her mimosa then set the glass down near the hot tub and got in, enjoying the way the hot water felt around her body.
Stefan took a gulp from his mimosa, then followed suit. He tugged the towel down off his shoulder, and winced as he tugged the shirt up and over his head. His shoulder was sore from where Tyler had tackled him last night. When he turned around to set his shirt aside, the wound on his shoulder would be clearly visible to Lexi in the tub.
Lexi almost didn’t notice it because she had been reaching for her drink, but as Stefan turned her back to him, she froze, brown eyes widening, “Stefan. What happened to your back?” Forgetting about her drink, Lexi moved from the end of the hot tub she’d settled in to the side closer to Stefan to get a better look, “Shit, Stefan, you’ve got….some sort of infection.” She knew that vampires didn’t get things like infections so it had to be something else and she wracked her brain for maladies she knew of from the dreams that could affect vampires.
Stefan turned to glance over his shoulder when she asked about his back, and frowned deeply. He couldn’t really see it, though the tendrils of black seeping out from the bite wound had spread fairly far by now. Instantly, he knew what it must be. “Oh, shit,” he mumbled, then dropped everything he was thinking or about to do, and headed inside to look in the mirror.
“I went to help Caroline with Tyler Lockwood last night,” he called back to Lexi as he crossed the living room. He wasn’t sure how well Lexi and Tyler knew each other. “Tyler turned into a werewolf.”
Lexi suddenly felt like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water on her and was out of the hot tub and standing in front of Stefan in the blink of an eye, “You got bit by a werewolf?” Lexi should have known it was a werewolf bite as soon as she saw it. She was older than Stefan in the dreams and knew more than him and while she hadn’t met many werewolves, she knew their bites were deadly to vampires, “Stefan….werewolf bites can kill a vampire.”
Stefan sighed, standing in front of the mirror in the small bathroom. His bathroom. The one that Caroline and Lexi used, mostly, but now he’d put some of his things in there, too. Because he’d moved into Caroline’s room and it was closer. And he could see the infection spreading through his shoulder. No wonder it hurt.
He came back out into the living room. “...I know.” One of his hands lifted, and he rubbed at his lip absent-mindedly with his thumb. “I… I saw it happen. To Rose.”
The thought of losing Stefan was not something that Lexi wanted to think of. Stefan had been her best friend for as long as she could remember and she didn’t want to live in a world without him, “This is not the time to have no Hybrid.” Lexi had been friends with Rose in the dreams and while she’d died long before Rose, she’d known what had happened, because Lexi had watched over Stefan from the Other Side.
“No.” Stefan ran his hand over his forehead, then dropped it to his side. There was nothing they could do. Nothing. There was no Klaus. There were no hybrids. All they had was Tyler, but that would only make things worse. Stefan was counting down the hours now, realizing he only had a day or two at the most before… before the end.
Stefan realized in that moment that he didn’t want to die. This was absolutely terrifying.
“Stefan…” Lexi didn’t know what to do or say, which was unusual for her, because she was usually the one who tried to fix things, but she couldn’t fix this. None of them could. “I keep telling you that you need to be more careful.” Of course getting shot and getting bitten by a werewolf were two entirely different things, but it was the first thing that came to mind when she spoke and she was too upset to think clearly.
“I know,” Stefan sighed, turning to wander into the kitchen. He didn’t know what to do, didn’t know where he was supposed to stand or sit or lay. He didn’t want to die, but he had to come to grips with that fact. He wasn’t long for this Earth now. He had to figure out how to explain it to Bubbles. He didn’t want to leave her. “...I guess I’ll be extra careful my last couple of days.”
He stopped in the doorway. “I have to text Damon.” And Caroline. And Bubbles And Wash.
