Who: Paroline (Peeta and Caroline)
What: Caroline mistakes a dream ring for a proposal
Where: Their apartment
When: This morning! (5/3)
Rating: Fairly low
Status: Complete!
It had been awhile since Caroline had any dreams. Like over a month. She wasn’t complaining though she was definitely enjoying the peaceful sleep every night. But she’d be lying if she said she didn’t want to know what happened with her magical vampire pregnancy. She’d just have to be patient, she’d have to dream it at some point. She knew this wasn’t the end of her dreams.
Although Caroline wasn’t having a small break from the dreams she was still exhausted. As usual she had a lot on her plate agreeing to too many things. Wanting to help everyone. She was getting to bed later each night and trying to wake up earlier. This morning though she overslept. When she finally opened her eyes an hour after she had planned on getting up, Peeta was no longer in the bed. She frowned and rolled over spotting something shiny on her night stand.
That certainly woke her up. She quickly sat up leaning over to look at whatever the object was. It took a moment to fully sink in. A ring? A ring?! “Oh my god!” Caroline exclaimed, the only words that would come to her mouth. If this was Peeta’s idea of a proposal it was a very sucky one. Oh my god. Was this a proposal? She wasn’t ready to get married! She was still in college, building a life for herself.
What was funny is that Peeta actually wasn’t planning on proposing anytime soon. He had discovered Caroline’s dream journal the other day and decided to skim through it and learn a little more about her dream self. The engagement wasn’t mentioned in there, but he thought that something weird was probably going to happen if she was going to help Alaric take care of his children. It all depended upon Stefan because she was currently in love with him in their dreams.
But he hadn’t been expecting that to show up, so he was sleeping soundly when he heard Caroline call out. Fighting through the fog he turned over towards her and a confused look passed over his face, “What? What’s going on?” He should probably be a little more alert considering all his military training, but civilian life had taken over for the moment. No immediate danger was sensed as he blinked his eyes a couple times before fully opening them to look at her.
What kind of reaction was that? Was he pretending he didn’t know? Seriously this was the worst proposal ever. This was so not how she wanted to get engaged. Hell she didn’t even want to be engaged right now. She was only twenty-one.
“Not funny, Peeta,” she replied. “Look, I love you but I don’t want to get married right now.” She wasn’t going to mention how sucky this proposal was because that would just be rude. But seriously, this was horrible.
“Why are we getting married?” The confusion stayed on his face before he suddenly realized that she was holding a ring in her hand and his eyes went wide. Was this seriously happening right now? It was definitely not something he would pick out and he hadn’t even thought about proposing to Caroline anytime soon.
He quickly sat up and shook his head, “That’s not from me. I wasn’t even thinking about proposing to you, promise. I know that it is far too soon for something like that. Did it….did it come from your dreams? You may have gotten a journal the other day.” Oops, maybe he should have mentioned that before right now, but it had slipped his mind after he skimmed through it the other day.
Well, this was beyond embarrassing. She should have figured it was the ring from Alaric but she had barely seen any of their relationship beyond the fact that she was pregnant with his babies. She had only seen glimpses of the future and barely paid attention to the ring.
“Oh,” Caroline finally said her cheeks pink. She lifted her hand closer to her face, inspecting the ring. “I guess it kind of looks like the ring I wear in the future flashes,” she frowned. What the hell was she supposed to do with this ring? “Sorry,” she mumbled still embarrassed especially with Peeta insisting he wasn’t even thinking about proposing. Not that she wanted to get married now but it wasn’t the most pleasant thing to hear. Then the rest of what he said sunk in. “Wait, my journal?”
Well, actually, he had been thinking about it, but he knew to not even approach that subject yet. It was far too soon and he didn’t want to jump the gun with Caroline. She was a little more skittish than most girls and he knew to take it slow with her. Eventually the day would come when he would ask her to marry him, but it could take its time. He knew she was the one, but he was more than happy to stay quiet and wait for her to get comfortable with that idea.
“No, it’s fine. I just...I know you’d want something better than that,” Peeta pointed out with a sleepy smile and then rolled over to find what he had done with the journal. He had tossed it in his drawer and pulled it out to hand it over to her, “Sorry, I found it and didn’t realize what it was initially. I read through some of it. Hope you don’t mind.”
He was right. Although Caroline didn’t like to admit it she could be shallow and yeah she would want a much nicer engagement ring than this. But still, what the hell was she supposed to do with this ring? Keep it? Pawn it? It probably wasn’t worth all that much. She sighed putting the ring in the drawer of her night stand for now, her cheeks still slightly pink from the embarrassment.
“It’s fine.” Caroline honestly didn’t care if Peeta read her dream journal or not. She basically told him everything about her dreams anyway. Although it would be slightly embarrassing if she gushed about Stefan in there. Not as embarrassing as thinking he was proposing when he wasn’t. And she doubted she talked too much about Stefan considering the journal was meant for Elena and Stefan was Elena’s ex. “Thanks,” she said as she accepted the journal from him but didn’t open it just yet. “Do I even want to know what’s in here?”
“It was just you talking about college and things like that. Making sure to keep Elena updated on everything,” he really wanted to tease Caroline about her liking Stefan in the dreams, but it was a little weird with having met the guy here and having him as part of his friend group. But at least she wasn’t scribbling Caroline Salvatore with hearts and flowers all over the pages. It also made him wonder if she kept a journal around here now.
He sat up and rolled over to her and smiled before giving her a kiss, “So, would now be a bad time to ask you about how you would want a real engagement to happen? I know the ring would have to be bigger than that. But, I’m thinking if we at least discuss it once maybe it won’t be so scary to you some day. And I also hope you don’t get more engagement rings from your dreams anytime soon.”
“Nothing embarrassing?” Not teasing her about Stefan was the right choice. That whole relationship was awkward. Well it was awkward that she dated almost everyone in the dreams. She definitely did not keep a journal in real life. That was just lame and the only reason she was doing it in the dreams was because Elena asked.
She was about to open up the journal to see for herself when Peeta distracted her with a kiss which she eagerly returned. “Oh god,” she sure hoped she wouldn’t be getting anymore engagement rings. She didn’t even want the one from Alaric. “I better not,” but she didn’t want to think about dream engagements anymore. Peeta was asking her a very real question about their possible engagement.
“Well,” she began as she pretended to think about it. Although she basically knew. “I don’t want to get married while I’m still in college,” she was so young still. She had eternity ahead of her but she also didn’t want to waste her time with Peeta considering how fleeting his life was compared to hers. “But yeah definitely a bigger ring. And you know most importantly don’t just leave it laying next to me.” She’d prefer an actual proposal, the whole down on one knee thing. Not waking up to just find a ring. In fact if that ever happened again she would just assume it was from the dreams.
Peeta knew that Caroline had been around the town with most of the guys in her dreams, so she wasn’t sure who else would be left to potentially give her a ring at this point. Unless one of them came back into the picture or there was a whole new plot twist. This should be the only one that would come from the dreams and he was a little surprised that he hadn’t gotten much from his ‘marriage’ to Katniss.
A small smile spread over his face as she pretended to spend time thinking about the engagement. He understood her not wanting to get married while still in college. That would give them enough time to really get to know each other before she graduated and potentially have a long engagement if he decided to pop the question. “Wait, I can’t just leave it there? What if I put it inside of something and leave it laying there?” Peeta teased as he leaned in closer to give her another kiss. He was filing away this information for use much later down the road.
Caroline returned his kiss laughing as she pulled away. “Nope,” she replied shaking her head. “Unless you want me to say no,” she teased. This was not a conversation she was expecting to have so early in the morning or in their relationship. But that’s what happened when you woke up to an engagement ring apparently, even if it wasn’t from your boyfriend.
“Whoever proposes to me needs to get down one knee, and a romantic setting, preferably. No bedside table.” She had no idea how Alaric proposed since her dreams seemed to skip over that part. But she had a feeling it wasn’t all that romantic. “Are you taking notes?” she teased, “or do I need to save this up for someone else in my future?” she pulled him in for another kiss though, showing him she only wanted him.
“Well, maybe this is all a big rouse and I don’t want you to marry me some day in the future. I’m just going to keep you around until I can be sure I can get full custody for Sonic,” Peeta teased her back with a laugh. It wasn’t unusual anymore for them to have conversations like this first thing now that they lived together. Just the other day they had discussed about having their parents coming over to see their new apartment together. Things sometimes got serious this early in the morning.
Oh god, she really did have it all planned out. “Mmmm, definitely taking mental notes. How do you feel about rings in food?” he murmured as he allowed himself to be pulled in for the kiss. A soft groan escaped his lips as he moved over and rolled her over onto her back as he was on top of her. He pulled away to lean down to kiss her neck, “Or maybe I should attach it to the collar of a very cute puppy.”
“What?!” Caroline protested, eyes wide. “No. I totally get Sonic. I’m the one that found him.” She was teasing of course because as far as she was concerned there would be no breaking up and she knew Peeta was just teasing her too. But really she would definitely be the one to get the hedgehog.
“Gross,” she wrinkled her nose. She knew food was Peeta’s specialty and all but she never got why people would put rings in food. Like, wasn’t that a choking hazard? And even if it was found before someone accidentally put it in their mouth it was still in food. Who put jewelry in food? However her thoughts were distracted by Peeta’s lips touched her neck. “Hmm?” she asked processing his words. “A puppy? I get a ring and a puppy?” that wouldn’t be the worst thing. Especially if this was in the future after they had taken care of Sonic for awhile. She tilted his head up for another kiss. This was definitely a better way to start the morning than an assumed proposal.
“Well, I’m just going to have to take a lot of pictures to document that I’m the better parent for him,” Peeta explained with a grin on his face and leaned in to kiss her cheek. It was fun to argue about this stuff now that they had a pet involved. They were becoming so domestic now.
“Maaaaaaybe,” was the only answer he could give on the puppy and ring front. He had no idea what he would do for her when it came time to propose, but he knew he had a lot of time to think about it. At least he was learning what not to do and hopefully it would go over well when the time finally came. There probably would be a puppy involved in their lives at some point because that was a next big step. The kiss was given to her as he lightly pressed his hips against hers. This was definitely a good way to start the morning off.
Well that was more than enough proposal talk for the morning… for a while actually. While she knew that was where they were headed neither of them were ready for that just yet. They had plenty of time and right now there were much better ways to spend the morning. So she let the subject drop. Kissing him hungrily now, her hands wandering over his back. They were just going to indulge in one of those better ways right now.
