Who: Sharon Carter and Riza Hawkeye
When: Early May
Where: Shooting Range
What: Random Encounter
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Riza was back at the shooting range regularly again, there wasn’t any large flower related holidays for a little while so she had more time and nothing relaxed her more than shooting at a target. She may not be in the military anymore but she was still a dead shot. Her sniper training wouldn’t ever go away that much she knew.
Spotting another woman as she made her way to the target she’d been assigned she said, “That target is just a little off centre. I’ve told them before but I think it’s a fault with the relay system” she didn’t want the woman thinking she was aiming wrong.
Sharon glanced over when the woman came closer. She raised an eyebrow, then tugged her ear protection aside so she could hear the other woman’s voice. “Hmm?” She asked, having missed that entirely. “I’m sorry, what was that?” She asked, politely.
“Sorry” Riza said, “I just wanted to warn you that the target on this one is a little off centre just so you don’t think you’ve suddenly become a bad shot or anything” she repeated, “I’ve told them but I think the relay is off balance when it sends the target back and forth”
Sharon looked as if a light bulb had gone off over her head. “So that’s what it is! I thought I was going a bit mad, to be honest.” She said, and gave a smile to the other. “Thank you! I was resigned to stay until I got it right, now I might just have to change aisles to reassure myself I’m not that awful of a shot.”
“I’m glad I noticed then, you could have been here a long time” Riza said, “You’re welcome to join me for a few rounds if you’d like?” she offered since there wasn’t a lot of other options around. “I’m here more just for some practice than really needing to shoot” After all it was done for fun now that she had retired from the forces.
“Hey, that sounds great.” Sharon said, giving her new friend a nod and a smile. Being a single mom who spent ninety-nine percent of her time either working, sleeping, or spending time with her daughter, she didn’t have a lot of time to meet and make friends. Maybe this was one of those opportunities to befriend another grown-up with similar interests. “Thanks for the invitation.”
Riza was similar really, she wasn’t a single mom but she did have custody of her two nephews and teenagers were not easy people to raise and on top of that she had her business. Meeting people away from the shop wasn’t easy so she had made the offer to this woman because it might be nice to have a new friend. “Great, I’m Riza by the way” she added holding out her hand.
“Hi, Riza,” Sharon said, lowering her gun. She reached forward and shook the other woman’s hand. “Are you here often? I haven’t seen you here before.” She moved over to her gun gase to load some more bullets into the glock she was using. It’d be nice to shoot for a while with a new partner. She liked to stretch herself a bit, and give herself a challenge, and shooting with someone brand new was a challenge.
“Not as often as I’d like but I don’t really have a set time so that may be why we’ve never seen each other before” Riza said, “Are you in law enforcement?” she asked checking her own weapon before making sure the safety was on as they moved to the new target.
“Ah, maybe that’s it. I don’t really have a set time, either,” Sharon admitted. “I was with OCPD, and now I work for a private business.” She didn’t talk too much about her work with the Agency outside of the building. “What about you?”
“Ex-Military. Special Ops mainly I was part of the sniper unit until I retired early” Riza said, “I now run a florists Flower Alchemy and I have custody of my two nephews”
“Wow, going from Sniper to Florist sounds like quite the change.” Sharon said, giving the other woman a surprised look. “Two nephews must take up quite a bit of your time and energy. How old are they?”
“Yeah it is pretty different” Riza smiled, “Fourteen and sixteen, they can be a handful but they’re good kids”
“Wow, yeah. I can’t imagine.” Sharon said, shaking her head. “Mine’s not even a year old yet, I can’t imagine when she gets to be fourteen years old?” She sighed then set back to putting some new ammunition into her weapon. “I imagine they eat you out of house and home.”
Riza smiled, “I didn’t see them an awful lot growing up, I was away on assignment a lot but they’re pretty amazing. Edward is ridiculously intelligent” she said proudly, “Oh yeah, I shop most days. They’re like bottomless pits sometimes”
“I can only imagine how much you must be spending on groceries each week!” Sharon said. Now that her weapon was reloaded she was ready to move on to the next target. “It’s just me and my daughter now that my roommate moved out, so my grocery list is quite a bit smaller now.”
“You don’t want to know, it’s the stuff of nightmares” Riza said, “Why do you think I come here?” she added with a small smirk. “Are you managing okay? I imagine it’s a change from having somebody else there all the time”
“I’m doing surprisingly well, actually,” Sharon said after a moment of thought. “It’s a big change, but I’m… well, I have all the reason in the world to be strong.” Viv needed her to be on top of her game all of the time.
“I have no doubt you are” Riza said with a smile, “Now let’s see how accurate you really are” she added stepping back and placing her ear protectors on to allow Sharon to shoot first.
