Anna was a very loyal supporter of Baxter Bakery. They were able to make coffee with tons of caffeine in it taste like a caramel milkshake, and she liked that. Since Anna was a bit of an addict. She was in there a lot, and liked the atmosphere. Homework seemed to go faster when she was in Baxter’s warm lobby.
But it was about time she headed over to the second store to check things out. Anna wanted to see it, to try out the pastries and drinks and compare to the original location. She broke into a smile as she stepped in. The lobby felt just as warm and inviting. That was a good sign!
Izzy had worked hard to make sure it was close enough to the original but with her own added touches. The decor while still being the same colour scheme was slightly different and she had chosen different artwork for the walls. Most of it was done by Clary or sourced locally because Baxter’s was all about community. There was a noticeboard too with adverts and things on for events happening around the county too.
“Welcome to Baxters” she greeted with a bright smile, “How can I help you?”
“Hi!” Anna said, brightly, as she moved up to the counter. She recognised Izzy from the other location, though she wasn’t sure she was as memorable as Baxter’s assistant manager was. “Thanks! I love it! I was just thinking about how different and the same this place is from the original location!” Then she realized she was babbling.
“I’ll have a caramel mochaccino, please! Do you guys have sparkling milk, too?”
Izzy did recognise Anna but couldn’t place her name so didn’t want to say anything and seem rude. She smiled at the comment, “That was the aim. I wanted it to feel familiar but not a carbon copy” she said before nodding, “Of course, it wouldn’t be a Baxter’s without it, can I interest you in a cookie too? Half price this morning with any hot drink”
“No, I think you did great!” Anna said, beaming. She loved the feel of the place. It was familiar and warm, but definitely not a carbon copy. “Oh, that sounds great! I’d love a cookie! Anything with chocolate. But no nuts, please.” She leaned against the counter. “Is it great? I mean, how’s business? Going well?”
“Thank you, I’m glad you like it” Izzy said with a smile, “You got it” she said choosing a loaded chocolate chip cookie to go with the drink that she began making. “It is, I’m so pleased. We’re getting a good mixture of new and old customers, it’s been fun to see those like yourself from the other store coming in here and seeing what they think”
“Well, this is a little closer to my house, though the other location’s a bit closer to school… depends on if I’m on my way to or from class, I guess!” Anna beamed. “Are you going to do music nights or open mic or whatever? I know Audrey does that sometimes at the other shop.”
“Well I’m glad that we’ll both get to share your custom then” Izzy told her before nodding, “Oh absolutely. The one thing Audrey and I always want to keep in both locations is the sense of being in the community we have. So all kinds of events will be held here or supported by us in other places”
“That’s wonderful!” Anna said, grinning brightly. “I used to love going to the open mic nights at the other location, and I used to love listening to the live music while I sat back with my coffee and studied.” She explained. “It’d be nice to have an option that’s closer to home!”
“Well then in that case I will move that up on my to-do list” Izzy said, she guessed a lot of students might be interested since they were relatively close to the UCI campus. “Thanks for the suggestion” she added as she handed over the drink and cookie.
“Oh, you’re very welcome!” Anna beamed. She was glad that her suggestion was helpful! She took a bite of the cookie, and nearly melted as she chewed. “Oh man, this is soooooo good,” she said, holding a hand in front of her mouth so she wasn’t really being rude and talking with her mouth full.
Izzy beamed, “I’m glad you like it” she said with a smile, “I added a little cocoa powder to the mixture to make it that little bit more chocolatey” she grinned. Anna needn’t have worried Izzy didn’t find it rude at all, she took it as a compliment.
“Hey, that’s amazing! I love it.” Anna said, brightly. Then her voice raised quite a bit, and she started talking fast as a brilliant idea came to her mind. “You know what you guys could do at Baxter Bakery? Offer some cooking classes! I would love to learn how to make cookies! I mean, I can make cupcakes, but wouldn’t it be amazing to learn how to make really good dishes like Audrey Baxter makes them?”
“Oh now that is a stroke of genius” Izzy said her own mind starting to run too, “I love that idea. I will definitely suggest it to Audrey and if we do go ahead then your classes are totally free for coming up with the idea”
“That sounds great!” But then what Izzy said sank into Anna’s mind. “Wait, what? Free? They don’t have to be free! But I can definitely help with the advertising!”
“It’s only fair. You did come up with the idea. I bet Audrey will insist too” Because she was that kind of person, she had the biggest heart of anybody Izzy knew. “And if you help us advertise too it would be really rude to take your money”
“You’re so sweet!” Anna was buzzing, really. This was the best idea ever, and she was super excited to get it all started! “You’ll have to keep me in the loop when the planning stuff all gets started? I’ll be here for whatever you need!”
“Of course. As soon as I speak to Audrey about it you’ll be the first to know” Izzy said, she was excited too. It was a great idea and she wasn’t sure why they hadn’t thought about it before. But now she was looking forward to taking it forward.
“Wonderful! Well, let me pay you for these things, and I’ll be on my way.” Anna said, grinning brightly, and handed over her credit card. She loved coming to Baxter Bakery, regardless whether it was the original location or the second.
Izzy took the payment and handed over the receipt and card, “Thank you and I look forward to seeing you again soon” she grinned.
