But you clearly have feelings for her
Who: Bo and Lara What: Bo has a heartbreaking dream When: late April Where: Croft Manor status: complete Rating: PG-13
The body swap had been difficult at first, but she’d eventually settled into Laura’s body. But even with that, she was more than relieved to be back in her own body. At least she knew how to handle the shitfest that was her own powers. It had been an intense reunion with Lara once she was back in her own body, and perhaps she’d even gained a new appreciation for her own powers.
But then Bo’s dreams had to interrupt the period of recovery from the body swap ordeal. And of course Bo’s bleeding heart had been firmly on display in the dreams, and had been thoroughly stomped on by The Morrigan. There was good reason why Bo hated dealing with the Dark Fae, and that case was the epitome of it. The Light Fae weren’t any better, but the Dark Fae were far more callous.
Though that wasn’t the worst part of any of it. She and Lauren had slept together again. And then the other shoe had dropped, as it always seemed to do where Lauren was concerned. Lauren had a girlfriend. According to the Morrigan. Kenzi had encouraged Bo to hear Lauren out. But upon waking, Bo sat up, slowly shifting to sit on the edge of the bed and buried her face in her hands.
She wanted to scream, but that wasn’t the wake up call she wanted to give Lara. Quietly slipping from bed, she pulled on a tanktop and pajama pants, took her set of throwing knives, then headed down to the gym. She set up a board as a target and threw the knives at it one after the other with a vehemence fueled by the dream. She hoped it would take the edge off until Lara woke up. Right now, she’d rather let her sleep while Bo tried to sift through the shitfest that had been her dream so she could be articulate whenever Lara came to find her.
Lara had needed a long nap after that, and her muscles ached in every positive way imaginable. She wasn’t even sure what time she’d finally gotten into bed and slept, only that she had eventually. And when she’d waken up, she found she was alone. Making that sort of pitiful questioning sound that a person only made when half asleep and wondering where their partner was, she patted the bed, then crawled out. Not bothering with trousers, she grabbed a tanktop and padded downstairs. A least there hadn’t been any screaming. Lara was grateful there’d been no screaming.
She followed the sound of knives on wood, and leaned in the doorway, watching.
Bo knew the instant Lara leaned in the doorway. Though she didn’t yet greet her as she was in the middle of aiming and throwing. The knife flew through the air and hit the board dead center with a very satisfying thunk sound. She drew in a breath, then turned towards Lara.
“Sorry I wasn’t there when you woke up. My dreams seem to not want me to have a break.” The look on her face was some combination of angry, hurt and confused.
“Do you want to talk about it? Or do you want to get breakfast and talk about it.” Lara was trying to not be pushy, but she’d learned that some things shouldn’t be kept to oneself. They tended to eat away at a person, otherwise.
“Talk about it, I don’t have an appetite after that dream.” Not yet, but maybe after talking about it, she’d be hungry. “In the dream, the Morrigan, the leader of the Dark Fae, hired me for a job. I didn’t want to take it, I hate that woman, but she totally took me hook, line and sinker by appealing to my bleeding heart by telling me she’d fallen in love with the guy I was supposed to find and bring back to her. Of course, in the end, she wasn’t actually in love with him and just wanted me to find him and find the leak in her organization. However, the payment she had for me was a way to save Lauren from the Ash.”
Bo sighed heavily in frustration. “My dream self is an idiot. She and Lauren slept together. And then the other shoe dropped as it always fucking seems to do where Lauren is involved. Or, you know, anyone in my dream self’s love life.”
Lara grimaced. She couldn’t blame Bo, she’d probably have fallen for that herself, and she was pretty sure Bo’s heart was bleedier than her own. Something she admitted only to herself, and then late at night, is she would have ended Sam to stop Himiko if she had to. She thought that Bo would have still tried to find a way to save Kenzi in the process, even if it meant damning the world.
“What was the other shoe? Lauren was a fae?”
Bo would definitely do absolutely everything she could to try and save Kenzi in such a situation. She’d take that route for anyone she cared about. Bo couldn’t stand losing the people she cared about, so she would do anything and everything to help them. She had a huge, squishy, bleedy heart, and she did her best to put it to good use. The only downside was Bo set herself up for getting hurt way more often than she should as she took people at their word.
“God I fucking wish she was fae. That I could handle.” She seriously wish the revelation had been something like that. “Lauren has a girlfriend, and she never told me. The fucking Morrigan told me. And the only reason I know the Morrigan isn’t actually pulling my leg here? Is she probably enjoyed being the one to tell me so she could see my reaction.”
At that, Bo promptly just sat down on the closest machine and rubbed her face with her hands. “You’d think something like would be something you’d tell someone before you slept with them the first time.”
“She what.” Lara looked horrified. She couldn’t imagine cheating on someone. It was grossly unfair to both the person being cheated on and the person being used by the cheater. “I’m so sorry, Bo…” She sat next to her and put her arm around her. “You have such a big heart and everyone keeps using it.”
Bo leaned on Lara. “My dream self doesn’t even know if she should be angry or hurt or what. Kenzi, who hates Lauren utterly, actually told my dream self to hear her out. I just know that no matter what, I am going to save her girlfriend and save Lauren from the Ash because it’s the right thing to do. Whatever happened to Nadia, she probably doesn’t deserve, and Lauren doesn’t deserve to be a slave.” It really said a lot about Bo’s character how she was still going to help save Lauren despite the fact her heart had been stomped on again.
“Seriously, you’d think I’d learn to stop putting myself in these situations. But no, Bleeding Heart Bo can’t turn her back on people!” That was a heavily sarcastic comment.
“Save her and then dump her ass,” Lara said. The more she heard about Lauren the more she utterly hated that woman. She constantly kept using Bo and if Lara had the chance to hit her she’d probably take it.
It was making her really angry.
“We’re not even actually together in the dreams. We just slept together. Besides, pretty sure she’ll go back to Nadia once I save them both.” Bo said with a slight shrug. It made her angry and it hurt. Though Bo wasn’t sure what made her more angry, that Lauren had a girlfriend and hadn’t told her, or that her dream self kept going back to Lauren.
“Clearly my dream self needs to stop falling for people. Dyson may have gone all jackass of late, but at least he sacrificed his love for me to save my life. Lauren hasn’t done anything even remotely noble like that.” In the end, Bo, in this life anyway, would give more credit to Dyson. Sure he’d done a lot of jerk things and avoiding her hadn’t been nice, but he had been selfless and tried to help save her life when she’d fought her mother.
“But you clearly have feelings for her,” Lara pointed out. The anger was strong in her voice. “And unless she’s as clueless as I am she probably knew about them and took advantage of you just to get a little thrill with a succubus.”
Bo noted the anger in Lara’s voice. “I don’t even know what’s going on inside her head.” And then she remembered a detail from the dream, from before she and Lauren had slept with each other. “She probably is just playing mind games with me. Or worse, maybe she’s just manipulating me so I can save Nadia since she clearly can’t do it herself.” And now anger was rising in Bo. Lauren had had the gall to want to know that them sleeping together wasn’t about trying to get over Dyson. Like she was one to talk considering she had a girlfriend somewhere that was in trouble.
“Why couldn’t she have just asked you??” Lara’s voice rose dramatically, and she almost snarled the last word vehemently. She wanted to get up, to hit things. But it was one of those useless rages and she squeezed her eyes shut and pinched her nose.
“Fuck if I know,” she said with a heavy sigh. She couldn’t understand it and she was in the mood to hit something as well. Something like a punching bag. Bo stood up and went over to the board that had her knives sticking out of it and she pulled them out one by one before retreating from the target. “I. Hate. My. Dreams.” Each word was emphasized with a satisfying thunk as a knife sunk into the board.
Anger was starting to boil within her. Her eyes turned blue as she glared at the target, seemingly wishing it was Lauren. Though the blue faded back to brown after a few moments.
Lara felt helpless, watching Bo and feeling the anger wash off of her like waves. She waited for the last knife, then came over and put her arms around her. It was frustrating, not being able to help. She tried a light joke. “I’ll make sure to tell you if I suddenly get another girlfriend in a coma.”
She drew in a slow, deep breath as Lara put her arms around her, and she tried to calm down a bit. “Thank you,” she responded. Her response was more of a serious one than a light joking one, but she did know that Lara was trying to lighten the mood. As such, she turned to face Lara, sliding her arms around her neck.
“You know, my dreams have made me appreciate you even more. So, thank you for not being a giant jerkface, and for being able to put up with my brand of crazy.” She looked Lara in the eye, meaning every word she said.
She touched Bo’s face. “Monagamy is important to me, and you’ve made such an effort for that, despite your fae nature. And what kind of bitch would I be if I took that for granted and then turned around and broke your heart like that?”
Lara worried, at times, that she was doing something unhealthy for Bo. And she would never force her or be angry at her of Bo had to turn elsewhere. But it would hurt, she wouldn’t lie about that.
“The kind that would have to face Kenzi’s wrath and my sad face?” Bo responded, a touch of humor to her tone. “Monogamy is important to me as well, and I take our relationship seriously. I’m sure it’s obvious now that when I give my heart to someone, I have no intention of taking it back.”
Obvious due to how Bo treated their relationship, and for the fact that Dyson and Lauren kept hurting her in her dreams, but she still kept going back to them. And as for monogamy being unhealthy for her, Bo didn’t quite care about that. She would fight her nature because she refused to hurt Lara like that.
“I’m more scared of your sad face than Kenzi’s wrath.” Lara’s arms tightened a little bit around Bo. Bo’s sad face would be nearly enough to give Lara a little more incentive to keep alive during her adventures. Though having Bo there with her would certainly help.
“You should be because I’m good at the sad face,” she teased lightly. Though Bo wasn’t exaggerating. She had a lethal sad face. She brushed her fingers through Lara’s hair. “I’m happy my drifting brought me to Orange County because it brought me to you. And I’m damn lucky to have you in my life.”
“I forgot what it was like to be close to someone.” Lara leaned her head into Bo’s fingers. She didn’t mean sexually, of course, but being close to someone. Lara had friends but most of them weren’t people that one would share the deep dark secrets with. “I think maybe I’m the lucky one.”
“How about we settle for we’re both lucky?” Bo suggested, twirling some of Lara’s hair around her fingers. “I forgot what it was like to have a home.” There was a difference between a home and a place one lived in. Bo hadn’t had a home since she’d run away from her parents’ home over a decade earlier. But now this was feeling like home. And Lara felt like home.
