Vanessa hadn’t been in the magic guild a lot, but with her powers fully settled in her now she thought a little research couldn’t hurt. It seemed foolish not to use such a good resource and she had to admit despite things going well for now she was worried about a possible future possession. Which was why she was currently sat with books around her about demonic possession and devil worship, it probably looked incredibly strange.
When Caleb first started seeing ghosts he spent a lot of time at the magic guild, trying to understand his new ability and how to use it. His time there had lessened lately, choosing to spend more of his time at bars. However, he still stopped by about once a week wanting to know more about his powers. He walked into the library seeing someone he hadn’t met yet and his eye caught what books she had. “Devil worship?” he couldn’t help but asked with a raised brow, stopping at a shelf near her and pulling out a book on spirits.
“I promise I’m not evil or anything” she smiled at the young man, “In my dreams I have issues with possession and evil forces trying to control me” she felt the need to explain.
“Damn,” Caleb muttered taking his selection to her table and sitting down across from her. “I’d want to read up on that too,” he commented. “Do you think something like that will happen here?” Caleb knew as well as anyone how dream abilities or injuries could bleed over. He had no idea what to classify possession as but he had a feeling that it happening here was possible.
“So far I’ve been lucky but with the way things go around here I feel it never hurts to be prepared” Vanessa said, “Hence my research” she gestured to the books. “Are you here looking for something specific?” she asked curiously.
“I get it,” Caleb agreed. He would want to be prepared as possible just in case something like that happened. “Is there a way to prevent it?” he asked before hearing her question. “Not really, just doing some research,” he shrugged.
“Staying away from temptation and bad influences seems to be my dream counterparts way but I’d like something a little more...reliable than that” she told him before nodding, a lot of people used the guild for general magic research. It wasn’t all that unusual.
“Don’t blame you,” Caleb commented. “Being possessed sounds like one of the worst things possible. Not having control of your own body,” he shuddered at the thought. “And I though being haunted by ghosts was bad,” and he only had one angry one after him. Luckily that was taken care of now too. So really he couldn’t complain. Not that he ever really did, he just drank.
“It isn’t the greatest experience, especially considering the power I seem to have” Giving anything else control over that would be worrying. “You see ghosts? Here as well as the dreams?” she asked curiously.
“Powers?” Caleb’s way of asking what powers. He knew she had to have some or she wouldn’t be at the guild but still. “Yeah, both places,” he confirmed. “Well not so much in the dreams anymore.
“Clairvoyance, cartomancy and mediumship mainly though I have a few others which have yet to fully manifest” she told him, before her eyebrow lifted, “How interesting. So are you looking for a way to make it stop?” she asked with interest.
Caleb didn’t know what a lot of that meant. Well other than the medium thing since he knew that was basically what he was as well. “Sounds like you have a full plate,” he commented. “Is that possible?” he would love to make it stop. It wasn’t an ability he particularly enjoyed but he had a feeling he was stuck with it. Wasn’t that how this place worked?
“Thankfully they don’t seem to all be ‘on’ at the same time so to speak. I get flashes when I touch things or sometimes if I start daydreaming” she told him, before considering his question, “Perhaps, I mean there must be some way of controlling these abilities. And we have resources here to help us”
“That would be chaotic,” Caleb said with a nod. He couldn’t even begin to imagine experiencing all those abilities at once. “I’m slowly learning how to manage it. I’ve tried to get it to stop but ghosts just keep showing up.” Well mostly just one in particular but still.
“Yes sometimes it feels so even just having them one at a time” she smiled, before nodding, “Can you control it better in the dreams or to the same extent?” she asked, wondering if perhaps that would be the only level he could attain.
Caleb nodded in agreement. He only had one total and just that was too much most of the time. “They just showed up in the dreams too, but then I left that town and went back to where my girlfriend lives and everything was the same again. Just saw them in my sleep.”
“How interesting” she said, “So it was perhaps linked to that specific town, or at least the manifestation of them was”
“I guess,” Caleb said with a shrug. Hell if he understood anything that happened in the dreams. “My ancestors lived there or something.”
“That could go someway to explain it then, if power is in the family it can mean that certain places heighten that supernatural connection” Vanessa said thoughtfully.
“That would certainly explain this place,” Caleb gestured with his hand although he meant all of Orange County. Not just the magic guild.
“I’m not sure anything can explain this place” Vanessa said with a smile.
“You’re probably right,” he agreed returning the smile. “This place is too crazy to even put into words.”
“It certainly is. But at least we have this resource to help us and new friends too” she said with a small nod in his direction.
“Speaking of, I’m Caleb.” It was probably time he introduced himself. Her powers seemed somewhat similar to his. At least the medium part. There was a comfort in that. Knowing others who were going through similar things.
“Vanessa, I’m pleased to meet you Caleb” she said, holding out her hand. It was always comforting to find someone who understood a little better what you were experiencing.
“You too,” Caleb said grabbing her hand to shake. “I have a feeling I’ll be seeing you around.”
