Will didn’t take science classes, his interest being more in literature but he’d watched a fun day lecture given by John and ever since he’d made a point of stopping by to catch up every now and then. Today happened to be one of those days and he came into his office with a grin in place, “Morning Prof, or is it afternoon?” He asked looking at the clock and realising it was midday so a bit of both really.
Looking up from his marking, John checked the clock in confusion. “Uh, afternoon? Makes it closer to going home that way,” he joked. He dropped his pen and leaned back in his seat, scrubbing his hands over his face as he did and letting out a frustrated groan. Marking these papers was starting to grate on him and he was counting down the minutes until he could leave. “What can I do for you Master Herondale?” he asked, leaning forward on the table.
“Works for me” he said dropping down into a chair casually, “Nothing much really. Thought I’d see how you were doing after spring break. Looks like you already need a break” he said gesturing to the piles of paper in front of him. “You didn’t set an essay over break did you? That’s an evil move” he grinned.
“Yeah it is,” John gave a little laugh in response. “Problem is, I’m not sure whether it was evil for the students or me,” he replied. “They're pretty straight forward but you get a bit number blind after a while,” he sighed. “How are you doing?”
“Ah that’s where it backfires you see” Will grinned, he’d had assignments too but they had been done long before they needed to be. “Numbers” he shook his head, “Not my area of expertise. I’m good, naturally. Could have done with a longer break but I think everybody says that”
“Yeah, I would have loved to spend some more time off,” John sighed. “I feel like I just started to relax and then I'm back here,” he joked with a smile, referring to the papers covering his desk.
“I’m sure your students wouldn’t have minded either” Will told him with a wink then before he could say anything else there was a knock at the door.
“Hey, you wanna go grab lunch or...Oh Hi” Sarah said as she popped her head around the door with a smile. Stepping inside, “Want me to come back later?” she offered slightly unnerved by Will’s growing smile.
John glanced nervously between Will and Sarah for a couple of seconds, trying to figure out the best response in this situation. “Uh, no, it’s fine,” he replied, hesitating as he spoke. “Will, this is Sarah. Sarah, Will,” he introduced the two of them as he stood from his seat. “Will just stopped by to see how I was doing,” he told her with a smile. He shoved his hands in the back pockets of his trousers as he watched them.
“Yeah we know each other” Will said, “So you bagged yourself the counselor? How fascinating. Do you not worry about her analysing you all the time? Like all the time” he teased bracing himself for the head slap he knew he’d be getting.
Sure enough Sarah didn’t disappoint and as she moved to take a seat she gave him a little slap as if by accident, “Enough of your cheek you cocky little devil” she told him, leaning over to press a kiss to John’s lips before she sat.
John smiled as he watched them settle down. “Sounds like you’ve been seeing the counsellor too, William,” he joked in return as he retook his seat. He winked at Will and started putting his papers in order. “Is there something I should know about?” he teased and grinned as he looked up at Sarah from under his eyelashes.
“Ha” Sarah said, “Is there anybody on campus who doesn’t know Will? I’m fairly sure he’s made sure everybody knows his name by now”
“Now now, you’ll make me blush” Will said winking before answering, “Not at all, you see as sad as it is for the human race I am already taken. A blow I know but my soulmates have been found and I am off the market”
Sarah rolled her eyes but her lips twitched in amusement as she shared a look with John, “How will the world cope?”
“The adult population must be crushed,” John joined in the teasing. Will was pretty easy going and he dished out enough that he figured his ego could take some light mocking. “Soulmates, huh? Do they attend here?” John asked. Even though he knew Will from around college, he didn’t know really know much about him on a personal level.
Will nodded, “They are” he said before smiling, “Jem does but Tessa actually runs a bookstore. Much Ado About Books”
“Oh I’ve taken Kira there, they have a redheaded girl who reads to the children and Kira adores her” Sarah said recognising the name of the store.
“Yeah, I’ve been there a couple of times. Nice place, great staff,” John remarked, stuffing a pile of papers into his drawer. “So what does Jem study?” John considered himself to be pretty at ease with modern relationships, after all, his one with Sarah hadn’t exactly come about through norma means, so he wasn’t too fazed at the idea of polyamorous arrangements. After all, it wasn’t his place to judge.
Sarah had heard of all kinds of relationships in her line of work and since Will seemed open and happy about it she was doing no judging whatsoever.
“Yeah it’s a great place” Will said proudly, he’d have to let Tessa know how well Capable was thought of. “Jem is studying music. He wasn’t able to play before the dreams but now he’s incredibly skilled on the violin”
“That’s incredible. God, I hope someone is doing studies on the effects these Dreams have on people here,” John replied, his scientific interest piqued. “I should probably try and subtly implant the idea in a student’s head to get them to start,” he looked to Sarah with a grin. “Got any hints or tips?”
“Sure but we should probably talk about it away from students prying ears” Sarah said with a wink.
“Oh I see, so you do all plot against us. Repression of the masses” he said with a smirk, “I’ll expose you all”
“Don’t worry kid, you’re not a science major, you’re not likely to be a victim of my cunning plan,” John joked, locking his drawer with the paperwork in it. “Now, if you don’t mind, I have got a hot date to get to,” he winked at Sarah as he stood and turned off his desk lamp. “Besides, don’t you have lectures this afternoon or something?”
“I would say something about standing up for fellow students but they picked science so they’re on their own” Will said standing with a sigh, “Yes I do. Fine I’ll leave you to enjoy your ‘lunch’” he winked at them both.
“Thank you Will” Sarah said obviously amused, it was hard to hold anything against him. He was too charming for his own good.
“Yes, thank you Will,” John grinned as the younger headed out the door. “He’s trouble that one,” he told Sarah as he nodded after the boy. “The good kind though,” he laughed, coming around the desk and offering her his hand to pull her up and out of her seat. “Shall we?”
“He’s a sweet kid once you get past all the hot air” Sarah said letting him pull her up, “Mmm let’s bring lunch back to your office I’d like a science professor for dessert” she grinned reaching up to kiss him.
