Caleb was over the dreams. It seemed as though Ravenswood was a distant memory in them even though it had all taken place within a few weeks. Even though the memories of Ravenswood still haunted him both in dreams and real life there was too much else going on in Rosewood to dwell on it. Like Hanna being framed as Alison’s accomplice in Mona’s murder. A erasing the texts when Hanna finally decided to show the cops, (a move Caleb should have seen coming and been more prepared for), causing her arrest. And then Hanna and the rest of the girls getting abducted from a fucking prison van, and of course the incompetent police thought they had escaped but Caleb knew better, he knew she had been taken by A,
Unfortunately that was where his dreams had stopped. He had no idea what happened to Hanna, but one thing was for sure he wasn’t going to let anything happen to her here. Ever. Thankfully it was a Friday so they could spend the whole weekend together. He just had to get through work first, which seemed to take forever. Even longer than when he first started and was still getting used to an office environment. He texted Hanna throughout the day making, more so than usual just to make sure she was still there. Taking off work early he headed to the UCI campus to wait for Hanna before her last class of the day got out.
Hanna was unaware of what Caleb had been dreaming. Ever since she dreamt of all the blood at Mona’s (there was no way someone could survive so much blood loss) and the deep feelings of guilt because it was her fault Mona had gotten involved in the first place….. Nothing. Maybe some repeats. But nothing new. Honestly, Hanna didn’t know if that was a good thing or not. They didn’t feel normal, but with A having no problem with killing?
So she did what she always did. Threw herself into her school work, internship, friendships and relationship. She didn’t let herself dwell on the matter. She was making sure that she kept everything under control. Everything under control. She couldn’t control the dreams, but she could control her own life. Well, okay. Mostly she could. One could never control Orange County. But right now, she really didn’t care. If anything she could control her eating and what she did while awake.
As it was Friday, there was nothing planned and since her mom was out of town for a work thing, Hanna didn’t even need to come up with an excuse for going to Caleb’s all weekend. She did notice the extra texting, but as far as she could see, everything was normal. Maybe he was just bored at work.
Absently tapping her pencil, Hanna jolted back to reality when people started to gather their things. Finally she was free. Getting her own things together, the blonde left her class, only to notice Caleb near by.
“Hey. I thought I was meeting you at my place?” Not that she didn’t mind him picking her up, she just hadn’t expected it.
“I wanted to surprise you,” Caleb replied with a smile before pulling Hanna in for a kiss. He couldn’t tell her he wanted to make sure she was okay. Safe. Well he could tell her that but he knew it wouldn’t go over well. Plus he wasn’t even sure how to explain these dreams. He would tell her, eventually. Not like she wouldn’t dream it herself anyway and they had the whole honesty policy. But for right now he just wanted to be with her. And yeah even though telling her about the dreams wouldn’t put her in danger they would still worry her, maybe even upset her and he certainly didn’t want to do that.
“I was thinking we could just stay in tonight,” he said once he pulled away from the kiss wrapping his arm around her shoulders as he led her back to his car. “I’ll cook. What are you in the mood for?”
Smiling some after the kiss, Hanna nodded. “Well, consider me officially surprised.” And in a good way. Given the nature of the dreams, surprising someone could be dangerous or lead to bad things. But Hanna was doing her best not to think about them because she still felt that pit of guilt in her stomach, forever settled. She hadn’t even trusted Mona, not anymore. They had similar goals (as far as she could tell), but for her to die? It was just better not to think about that.
“Staying in is definitely fine by me.” And that was the question, wasn’t it? What was she in the mood for. Given she’d been compulsively watching her food intake as of late, it wasn’t something she really knew what to answer. “Hmmm. I don’t know. I’m good with a salad.” That was safe. And also it wasn’t like she was hungry for much else.
Even in the dreams Caleb usually surprised Hanna, mostly at dances but there was that time at Cece’s shop too, and at her house when she tried to kill him with her pink furry lamp. That was the only time in the dreams that a surprise had gone wrong really. In the back of his mind he knew she was somewhat paranoid from the dreams, not that he could really blame her. But he wasn’t going to stop surprising her. Especially when he saw that smile on her face.
“Salad?” he asked as they reached the car holding the door open for her before going around to the driver’s side and climbing in himself. Salad certainly wasn’t going to be enough for him. “That’s not really cooking,” he laughed starting up the car. “How about chicken parmesan?”
Somewhat paranoid would be an understatement. Did she try to get on with her life and do her normal routine? Of course. But that didn’t mean she wasn’t waiting for some horrible thing to happen, some form of blackmail or threat. Even changing the ringtone on her phone hadn’t done much good, even if she was able to not jump when she got an alert. But these sorts of surprises were definitely of the good variety.
Settling in the car, Hanna shrugged at the comment.
“I’m just not that hungry. But if you want chicken parmesan, don’t let me stop you from cooking.” It didn’t bother her.
It was still a few hours before dinner time. He was sure Hanna would change her mind, she might not be hungry now but that would probably change. He’d make both though, a salad and chicken parmesan. Not like a salad took all that much time of effort to make anyway.
Once they were inside his apartment Caleb got a beer for himself. Hanna was more than welcome to anything in his fridge and she knew that. “So,” Caleb said popping the top off the bottle. “Where are you at in the dreams?” he didn’t think she had dreamt of being kidnapped yet, or even going to jail, but still he wanted to be sure. It would actually be a relief if she had already dreamt it all and nothing had happened to her, because who knew what kind of crazy shit could bleed through.
While it was still a few hours out, Hanna doubted she’d be wanting to eat anything beyond salad anyway. But there was no need to point that out right now. It would probably raise red flags and if she just wasn’t hungry later, that was that. It was an easy enough solution so she was willing to let it go for now.
Instead, she just made herself at home once at the apartment, going for juice herself. At least until the question. It wasn’t as if there was much to say, she had no idea where Caleb was in them either. And while there was plenty to discuss, she just… didn’t know where to begin or how to say it. The feelings she had for Mona were complicated at best, especially since she didn’t know Mona here. But, he did ask so she might as well see if he knew what she was talking about.
“Thanksgiving.” Okay. Not much to go on. But if he was up to that point, there wasn’t much else she needed to say.
So Mona was dead. It was only a matter of time before she dreamed of all the badness, Not that the dreams weren’t bad already but they were about to get so much worse. Especially for her. He frowned taking a gulp of beer. He was officially worried about what would happen when Hanna dreamt it all, dreamt of A taking her. Would she be hurt? He did his best to push those thoughts out of his head.
“Sorry about Mona,” he finally said. Although he wasn’t sure how true that was. He didn’t like Mona. Hated her actually. She had been the original A, tormented Hanna, ran her over with a car. Yeah he didn’t really care that she was dead.
Hanna just nodded at the comment about Mona. That answered her question on if Caleb had dreamt up to that point. Which clearly he had. But he hadn’t really mentioned anything about it, or anything else that was to come to pass so it wasn’t like there was anything she would need to know. In theory.
“Yeah. Me too.”
The guilt over it was so hard to deal with. It was something she didn’t know what to do with, especially here. Yet it was still there and taunting her. It was frustrating. So instead she just took a sip of her juice.
Well there wasn’t much else to be said on that matter. Might as well get dinner started. They did cook together often in the dreams. Had even taken cooking lessons over the summer. Besides if they talked more about Mona how much he despised her just much show and it was clear that Hanna was upset her death.
“Let’s get dinner started,” he suggested getting the ingredients out.
So much for waiting for a few hours to see if she got ‘hungry’, but the sooner the better, really. Besides it was something else to focus on, not the guilt, not the dreams in general. Cooking. Even if the sight of food really wasn’t all that appetizing at the moment and mostly made her want to be sick.
Which was why she would stick with her salad once it was over and done with. Because she was still eating, just she wasn’t hungry. As she had said before.
It wasn’t like dinner would be ready right this second. It would still take some time to prepare and cook. Raw chicken was just bad. Besides it was better than standing around talking about dead Mona. Or Hanna going to jail for her murder which she hadn’t even dreamt yet. “You can start on the salad if you want,” since that’s all Hanna seemed to care about which yeah was worrisome. “But we have time.”
