Audrey thought she could hack it. With even more of the work now being sent out to the accountant, she had more time for scheduling and supervising… but Audrey wasn’t particularly happy doing those things. She wanted to be working with the dough, not her employees. (No offense to them, or anything.) So she wanted to promote someone to take on some of the work that Izzy left behind.
She’d called Caroline into her office. When the blonde looked through the doorway, Caroline would see Audrey at the computer, pouring over this week’s schedule. She made it fairly easy--they knew when they were going to be busy, and scheduled coverage at those times. The rest of the time was sort of up in the air.
It was a little nerve wracking being called into the boss’s office. Despite the fact that she was on good terms with Audrey and was fairly certain she hadn’t done anything to be reprimanded for it still made her slightly nervous.
After finishing up with a customer she asked her co-worker to take over, heading to the back office. She spotted Audrey at her computer with the door open. Caroline still knocked on the wall, standing in the door frame. “You wanted to see me?” she asked placing a small smile on her face.
Audrey glanced over at the sound of the voice, and broke into a bright smile. If she’d known that Caroline was intimidated by being called into her office, she would have laughed. It was hard for Audrey to imagine herself as intimidating.
“Hey, Caroline, come on in.” Audrey’s office was small and cramped, but there was a chair opposite her desk that was comfortable enough for visitors. She motioned to it, and turned her full attention to Caroline instead of her computer. “Is it busy out there?” Hopefully they had enough coverage in the front that Caroline’s presence wouldn’t be missed too badly.
“Hey,” she reapplied with a small, warm smile. She entered the office and took the seat opposite Audrey’s desk. “It was, the rush has passed there are just a few trickling in now.” That’s how it usually went. It would be slow and then crazy busy and then slow again, it sort of evened out and always kept things interesting.
“Oh, good.” It went in cycles. Audrey wasn’t really surprised. It was nice that it was a little slow, but too slow was bad, too. Enough time to catch breath between the rushes was what she longed for. But that was a slightly different topic.
“Listen, since Izzy’s been over at BB2--” which was Audrey’s adorable nickname for the new store… very nerdy, right? “--the work load over here has been kinda crazy for me. I’m looking for someone to step up into her position as assistant manager, and I think you would be an excellent candidate for the position.”
Just wait till Audrey opened up eight Baxter Bakeries. Caroline almost laughed at the thought, but then she heard the rest of what Audrey had to say and her eyes lit up. Was Audrey offering her the job right now? The job was kind of perfect for her. She knew the staff well (obviously) and she was super organized. “I’d love to help lighten your workload,” Caroline said flashing a bright smile.
Audrey beamed. She was glad that Caroline agreed. Not only would the blonde be perfect for the job, but the pair of them got on so well. Audrey was looking forward to having help around the bakery with the administrative stuff, and work with someone who was so upbeat and competent. “Perfect! Why don’t we start tomorrow? Come in about ten minutes before your shift and we’ll go through all the details. It might mean a few more hours per week, but most of that will be spent in the office.”
A few more hours a week would be fine. Her schedule was pretty packed but now that she lived with Peeta she no longer had to set aside time to be with him because he was always there when she got home. The rest of her social life? Well her friends would have to settle for seeing her on campus or studying with her. “Tomorrow’s great,” Caroline replied smile spread clear across her face. “Are you sure only ten minutes? I can come earlier.”
“I think ten minutes should be fine. We’ll go through your new duties and I’ll be there with you during your shift tomorrow… and we can work out a new schedule then.” Audrey was so very pleased. She knew this was going to work out well. The fact that Caroline was enthusiastic and willing to come even earlier was a good sign. Audrey stood from her desk and reached out a hand to shake Caroline’s.
Caroline stood to shake Audrey’s hand. “Sounds good,” she said dropping her hand after the shake. . “I’ll see you tomorrow?” it was more of a question if there was anything else or of she should get back to work. “Well I’ll probably see you before I leave today.”
“Sounds good.” Audrey grinned. “Yes, I’ll see you out there in a little bit.” She moved to sit back down in her chair and finish up her paperwork.
