Of course, Anna wasn’t really thinking that Peeta was a baker of all things, and could easily out-cupcake her in his sleep when she decided to make a batch of cupcakes to take to Peeta and Caroline’s new place and deliver as a housewarming present. Her favorite was chocolate, so she went for that--creating the batter from scratch and frosting the things with some homemade butter cream stuff she concocted in the Kitchenaid. The only thing in the world Anna could make from scratch was cupcakes, and when she did she went all out.
She arrived at Peeta and Caroline’s doorstep the day after move-in day holding a tupperware of cupcakes, and grinned brightly after ringing the bell.
Caroline was leaving everything kitchen related to Peeta. He was the one that cooked after all. She didn’t care much where things went as long as she knew where to grab a plate or a mug when she needed to. So she left him to unpack the kitchen while she was in their bedroom beginning to unpack her clothes. They so were not all going to fit in the closet. She sighed trying to figure out how she was going to organize it all when she heard someone at the door.
“Can you get that?” She called to Peeta since well he was closer and vampire speed or not her arms were full of clothes at the moment.
Packing was a slow and torturous process and Peeta wished that things would just move quickly, but Caroline had a lot more things than he had anticipated. Luckily she was working on a lot of the major things like their bedroom and he was able to do things in the kitchen, which is where he spent a lot more time anyway. He had multiple boxes unpacked and he was currently putting things in piles and putting them away as he decided where in the cupboards they should go.
The doorbell was a surprise and he lifted his head to check where Caroline was when she called out to grab the door. “Got it,” he called back to her as he set down the mug that was currently in his hands. After weaving his way through the boxes he made it to the door and opened it to find Anna on the other side, “Oh hi! How’s it going, Anna? Come on in.”
“Peeta!” Anna beamed brightly in that very Anna-like way, and held up the casserole dish full of cupcakes. “Hi! I brought you a housewarming gift!” And after the invitation, Anna headed into the new place. Sure, she’d seen it yesterday (or the day before? Or whenever it was) when they were moving things in, but she’d been pretty exhausted. And spent most of that time focused on the size of Caroline’s closet. “How’s the unpacking coming along? Did you get milk? Because these cupcakes go really great with milk! I can run out and get some if you want!” She was just a ball of energy tonight.
Hearing Anna at the door Caroline set the clothes on the bed for now and walked out to the living room. “Hey Anna,” Caroline gave her friend a smile eyes falling to the casserole dish full of cupcakes. “Aw, thank you,” she said accepting the dish and walking it over to the kitchen. The counter had boxes all over it but she managed to find a place on the counter to set them down. Did they have milk? She had no idea she didn’t usually check these things as long as they had blood she was fine. Opening up the fridge she saw a carton. “We do!” She confirmed maybe a bit too excitedly.
“Did you want a cupcake?” They could take a cupcake break for a few minutes right? Anna had come all this way after all. “Where are the glasses?” That was directed at Peeta, obviously Anna wouldn’t know.
Peeta had stepped aside to allow Anna into the apartment and smiled as he watched Caroline make her way over to greet her friend. The housewarming gift of cupcakes was amusing, but very sweet. It was probably a good thing that he didn’t have a ton of baked goods in the fridge at the moment because he usually brought things home from work. He closed the door and wandered into the kitchen to try and find a set of glasses that they could drink out of, “And cupcake break sounds good. Let me grab some glasses so we can pour some milk.”
It didn’t take him too long to find the glasses and he also managed to uncover some napkins. He brought the mover to the girls and moved around more boxes so that they had empty counter space to putz with the box of cupcakes. “So, what kind of cupcakes did you bring us? And thank you for that, by the way.”
“Hey, Care!” Anna said, lifting the casserole dish with a grin. She passed it off to Caroline, then set her purse down on a nearby box and followed Caroline and Peeta into the kitchen. “Oh, cupcakes are the only thing I can make, really. I’m no chef! But I made these from scratch! I even double-boiler melted the chocolate and everything.” Anna was so proud. And hey, they were probably pretty good. They were the only thing she knew how to make, so she practiced a lot.
The redhead pretty much stayed out of the way in the kitchen while the other two got glasses and napkins, smiling at how they seemed to move like synchronized dancers. It was sweet. “You’re very welcome! I wanted to show you guys how happy I am that you’re settling in all right in the new place!”
Caroline still knew next to nothing about making cupcakes. You would think with working at a bakery and dating a baker she would have picked some things up. But nope. She didn’t need to so what was the point? Caroline had so many other things to do anyway.
Once Peeta got the glasses Caroline poured the milk returning the carton to the fridge, which didn’t have much else in it other than blood bags and leftover takeout. “Thanks!” Caroline said again. “It’s still a little overwhelming I’ll feel better when everything is unpacked.” That was the overwhelming part. Not the living with Peeta, she basically already did that before the actual move anyway. “Is Stefan all settled?” He seemed more excited about the move than she was and that was saying a lot.
Teaching Caroline some cooking tips wouldn’t be that big of a bother to Peeta, but she hadn’t asked, so he didn’t really make an effort on that. Although he had to admit that Anna talking about her cupcakes made him smile and he knew better than to ever compare them to his, but she was quite proud in what she had done. He was sure they were perfectly delicious.
“I think that’s so funny that Stefan jumped on your room so fast. Didn’t realize that you had such valuable property,” Peeta commented as he handed out the cupcakes with a napkin underneath them, “And this place is coming along nicely. It just takes some time to figure out where everything goes.” That was the only downside to moving because you had to reconfigure all your stuff once again. Hopefully they would be finished up in a couple days.
“I hear that’s how things go with moving,” Anna said. She’d only done it twice--once out of her parents’ place, and once into her current house. “And if you really need help unpacking…” She offered. They’d talked about it before, but Anna didn’t really think Caroline needed help. Anna thought Caroline was placating her, since she was moving out. “Stefan seems pleased. He doesn’t have nearly as much to unpack as you guys do.” There was only one of him, anyway.
“And I gave it all up to live with you,” she teased Peeta accepting the cupcake and taking a bite. “These are so much better than your pancakes,” she teased Anna. How one could only cook one thing she had no idea, but then it wasn’t like she could talk.
“It’s mostly me,” Caroline laughed. Peeta did have a lot of kitcheny stuff, but Caroline just had a lot of things in general. Clothes, shoes, make-up, keepsakes from high school that she wasn’t ready to let go of just yet.
“Mmm, these are good. Great job, Anna,” Peeta complimented with a smile after he sampled the cupcake. They weren’t half bad and she did a good job on the chocolate, so he was happy to pay her compliments for her cupcakes.
“And don’t worry, we’re almost done with the unpacking. Appreciate the offer though. It was nice enough that you came over with sustenance because this helps out a lot. We still need to buy some groceries soon,” which made Peeta chuckle because their kitchen was bare bone at the moment.
“I’m so glad you like them!” Anna beamed, looking between Peeta and Caroline. It made her so very happy to know that they liked her cupcakes! Her cheeks went a little pink and she sipped at her milk. A baker liked her cupcakes! This was the greatest moment ever. (Well, one of many.)
“Oh! I could go get you guys some things! Like, you could write me a list, or something. I know the last two times I moved, I tried to eat all the stuff in my fridge so I’d have less to move!” Anna said, as if she was an expert. “I’m really good at shopping!”
Caroline couldn’t help but smile as Anna’s eyes lit up at his compliment. She could tell it meant a lot to her given Peeta’s profession and all. “Thanks,” she said about the grocery shopping. “But you’ve done more than enough already. You already brought us cupcakes.” Plus she had helped with the moving Anna didn’t need to do anything else for them. And their first trip to the grocery store together was kind of a big deal. At least to Caroline, even if she didn’t care about what they bought. Just all their firsts living together was exciting and she didn’t want to miss out on any of them.
“What Caroline said. Appreciate the offer, but we’ll be fine doing it on our own,” it was kind of romantic to think about their first real grocery store trip together as a couple that lived together. Yep, Peeta was a bit sappy, but he was excited to explore all these milestones together with Caroline, “The cupcakes were more than enough.” That was something that Peeta was looking forward to for Caroline’s sake. She seemed to have a lot on her plate right now and he was curious about how she would be during finals week.
Anna had never lived with someone romantically before. She didn’t really understand that the first trip to the supermarket together was a big thing--it was the establishing of the domesticity, the foundation on which so many things were made. Food, house supplies, linens, whatever. Communal things.
“Okay. Anything I can do to help, just say the word!” She reached for one of the cupcakes for herself grinning. “I should probably let the two of you get back to unpacking and everything. But I’ll see you at school?” She asked of Caroline.
“Will do! Thanks so much,” Caroline gave her another smile finishing off the cupcake. “And definitely I’ll be in class Monday,” she wasn’t going to skip just because she moved. “See you then!”
