It was a long day in the morgue. Big day for murders apparently. Multiple victims had come in, it was back to back autopsies for Liv and her boss. She was exhausted and she smelled like dead people. Liv usually liked to cook, there was something methodical and even relaxing about it for her. However tonight was takeout night. She was done with the day, done with any type of work. She just wanted to get home, shower, and veg out in front of her TV for a few hours before she passed out for the night. But first food.
She was craving Chinese. As she headed to the car Liv called in her order, probably selecting way too much food for one person but she didn’t care she was starved at the moment. Plus left over Chinese was always good. The drive wasn’t too long and soon enough she was at the restaurant collecting food. Arms full of bags she turned to leave and bumped into someone, causing her to drop her food. “Ugh,” Liv muttered under her breath. Today was just not going her way. “Sorry,” she said to whoever it was she bumped into before collecting her food. Of course a few of the containers had spilled. This was just great.
The smell of chinese food was secretly one of Chloe’s favorite smells because it always smelled amazing. Even if she had stuffed herself silly at some other restaurant she would instantly start craving sweet and sour chicken the moment she caught that familiar whiff. So, instead of resisting her urges to go home and make herself something proper for dinner she had decided to treat herself and her roommate to chinese food. There was one not too far from her work that she had discovered was really good and that was her stop immediately after work.
Unfortunately Chloe didn’t realize that someone would be coming out of the restaurant at the moment she was entering and there was a collision. There had been a brief moment when she attempted to make a motion to help grab something that was falling, but she wasn’t that skilled. A frown passed over her face as she leaned down to help her out, “Oh no, I’m sorry! I should have been paying better attention and grabbed the door for you. And now your food is ruined.”
Liv was still in her grumpy mood but it wasn’t this girl’s fault she had had a bad day. And she seemed so apologetic. Liv forced a smile at the girl who was helping her. “It’s fine,” she replied maybe not in the sweetest tone but she wasn’t snapping either. “It’s probably a sign I ordered too much anyway.” Standing back up she spotted a trash can near the door and threw out the few containers that had opened. She still had plenty of food, but man she was really craving some pot stickers and those fried donuts. Looked like she’d have to reorder them. She could wait to eat a little longer she supposed. “It’s just one of those days,” she added heading back inside towards the line to order more take out a spot next to her for the girl she had just run into.
“I know the guys that run this place if you want to go up there and talk to them to get the food replaced. I’m pretty sure they saw the whole thing anyway,” Chloe’s eyes lifted and she glanced over the girl's’ shoulder at the employees of the place watching them behind the counter with smirks on their faces. Oh yes, they certainly watched the crash as it happened, “And I know how those days go. Is there anything else you’d want? I can add it onto my order.” Chloe was more than happy to buy her something else if it would help make her day a little better. Sometimes it just took a small gesture to turn someone’s day around and Chloe didn’t mind buying something extra for her.
Well if she had to run into someone at least it was someone who knew the owner and could possibly get her food replaced for free. “Thanks,” Liv replied her smile growing slightly. “I’ve been in here a like twice before. Still new to the area,” she wasn’t quite sure why she was explaining herself but oh well. “It took some time to find the right take out places.” Some were just no good, this was one of the better ones, obviously. And she would like it even more if they replaced the food she lost for free. “That’s so sweet of you, but I think I have plenty of food already.” The girl certainly didn’t have to buy her anything. “I’m Liv by the way.”
“Ahhh, you’ve got a lot to learn. I’ve been coming here for a while now, so you get to know the people,” Chloe wasn’t ashamed that she bought way too much chinese food from time to time. At least she knew she would get eggrolls and wontons for free when she came in, “And yeah, there’s a lot of places around here to try. I wish you luck in trying them all because you’ll be at it forever.” A smile was given as she made her way up to the front of the line, “And you sure? It’s not a big deal. And nice to meet you, I’m Chloe.” When they made it to the register she greeted the guys and explained what happened and they readily agreed to make new food for Liv.
“I was pretty friendly with the owners of my favorite place back home,” Liv agreed. It would probably only be a matter of time before she got to know the people of her favorite take out places here. She laughed at the next comment. “Yeah I don’t think i could ever try them all. Just enough till I find one I really like for each type of food. But I cook a lot too so it’s not like I try a new take out place every day.” That would be too much. Liv’s smile widened when they agreed to replace her food for free. She thanked them before turning her attention back to Chloe. “It’s nice to meet you too. Clearly you were the best person for me to bump into.”
“Ahhh, that’s smart of you. I really need to start working on my cooking skills. I’m decent at it, but take out is so much easier and there’s so many options,” Chloe commented with a laugh. She was also really lazy some days and cooking seemed like such an exhausting thing to do when she could just dial her phone and not have to put real pants on. “Well, I might be the best person, but I still feel bad that your food hit the floor. It shouldn’t take too long to get your new food though, so that’s helpful.” If they had collided then poor Liv would have been out of here with her food by now, hopefully the stuff that did survive didn’t cool down too much.
“Exactly,” Liv agreed with a nod. “Plus after a long day at th-, of work,” she almost said ‘at the morgue’ but that freaked some people out. “It’s easier to just pick something up.” Cooking was something she enjoyed in her dreams as well, preparing meals for her brains. It made her feel a bit more human even though the only thing she could taste was hot sauce. “At least it’s getting replaced for free.” It could have been worse. More food could have been ruined or she could have had to pay for it all again. Even though her day hadn’t been the best it was somewhat looking up now.
“Yeah, I can’t imagine a lot of places would make you pay for what happened because it was total accident. And if they do charge you then you know never to go back there ever again,” Chloe pointed out with a smile and a gesture of her hand. It was as simple as that. If a restaurant wasn’t kind enough to help someone out and basically wanted to make a buck then they weren’t worth it in the first place. It was important for restaurants to really take care of their customers (Well the nice ones anyway, if you’re a dick then you get nothing) because that’s who gave out the best advertising with word of mouth. Chloe raved about this place all day every day when she was at work, “But I feel you on the work thing. I’m so ready to kick these shoes off and get in some sweatpants.”
Sure places like that would make a few bucks then, but they wouldn’t get repeat customers. Not like a place who understood accidents would. “So really they would be losing business.” Liv commented with a nod. “That was my plan exactly,” she laughed agreeing with Chloe. “Just veg out in front of the TV until I passed out.”
“Sounds like a good plan. Oh hey, let me grab you my card,” yes, she had a card as an intern. She ran into a lot of people doing her job, so it was just so much easier to exchange information. She dug in her purse and fished out a card and handed it over to Liv, “Here you go. Let me know if you ever need a hook up on random restaurants around town. Or if you want to know another good take out place.” Their food was being packed up right now as they spoke, so they would be parting ways soon.
Liv didn’t have a card, she didn’t exactly go around saying ‘Liv Moore, Medical Examiner,’ or handing out cards stating that. There was no need, the police she usually worked with knew who she was and corpses just got sent to the morgue she worked at. “Thanks,” Liv said accepting the card, “You work for Warner Brothers? That’s so cool,” Liv commented as their food was handed over to them. She slipped the card into her wallet for now before accepting her food. “I don’t have a card to give you but I’ll definitely be in touch.”
“I do, it’s a lot of fun. But feel free to hit me up at any time. Just mention this place and I’ll instantly remember you,” Chloe promised with a laugh as she stepped forward to grab her bag of food and hand Liv hers as well, “I look forward to talk to you some more. Enjoy your food and your wonderful night of chilling.” That would probably be what Chloe ended up doing tonight because she really didn’t have much else to do and she had to share food with her roomie. They walked out of the doors together and Chloe gave her a wave goodbye as she made her way to her car.
