What: Caroline brings something new home
Where: Their apartment
When: Today (4/7)
Rating: G
Status: Complete
It had been a long day of classes, as usual. Caroline was so ready to be done with school. At least she only had a little over a year left and now she could go home to her new apartment, which she was still pretty excited about. However, as she was heading to car she saw this guy she had class with last year giving away some type of animal. Of course she had to see what they were. That was when she saw the most adorable creature she had possibly ever laid eyes on, she just had to take one home, so that was exactly what she did.
The drive back to their apartment felt like it took forever, Caroline was constantly looking over at the passenger side to look at the little hedgehog it was just so cute and she wanted to make sure he was okay. Finally they reached the complex. Caroline carefully picked the little guy up grabbing her purse and heading to the apartment.
“Babe,” Caroline called hedgehog in hand as she opened the door to the apartment. “Guess what I got.”
The move had gone smoothly and they were still figuring out how to set everything up inside the apartment. They were working on the guest room and he knew that Caroline was still trying to sell him on the idea of turning it into some kind of closet for her, but it would have to wait until all the guest room stuff was situated. They had friends and if they wanted to host a party then at least they had a place for some of them to crash instead of just using the couch.
He was currently hanging up some pictures in the living room when he heard Caroline enter and shout out to him, “Um….a dvd of the new Star Wars movie?” Hey, it was a guess that could be considered fairly accurate, but he was not going to be able to predict what she had truly picked up from school today.
“Guess again,” Caroline said shutting the door behind her, the hedgehog was so tiny he fit in just one hand. Was this the type of thing she was supposed to ask him about first? Probably. They were taking on a pet. Or at least she was but it would be living with the both of them, she couldn’t imagine Peeta not helping out. Oh well, too late now. She had already fallen in love with the prickly little thing. Setting her purse down she made her way towards Peeta looking over the pictures he had hung. This place was really starting to feel like their place.
“Um, an apple?” Peeta threw out as he turned to catch that whatever she had was fitting in her hand. But an apple was certainly not worthy of this much excitement, but he had to admit his interest was piqued. He stepped away from the wall, setting the hammer down on the coffee table, and made his way over to her with a smile, “So, I know that guess is completely wrong and you should just show me.”
“You really fail at this,” Caroline replied unable to contain her laughter. Yes, she couldn’t wait to show Peeta an apple. But to be fair, who would guess a hedgehog? “Hold out your hand,” she instructed because the best way to show him was to let him hold their new pet.
“Do I need to close my eyes too?” An eyebrow was raised as he held out his hand to her and waited to see what in the world was going on. It must be something good because Caroline hadn’t stopped grinning since she walked into the door. He was at a complete loss about what she could be hiding from him.
“No you can keep them open,” she replied with another laugh. She gently placed the hedgehog into his hand. “I got us a hedgehog?” It was meant as a statement but came out as more of a question. She gave him a sheepish smile, those big blue eyes of hers focussed on him almost pleading to let them keep it.
“Wha…” he was speechless as he stared down at the tiny animal in his hand and then back up to Caroline to make sure she wasn’t joking about this. The hedgehog was pretty damn adorable because he was laying on his back and all he could see was his tiny face, a bit of his belly, and his front paws, “Well...I wasn’t expecting that. Are you sure you want to take care of a hedgehog? We’re going to have to take him to the store to get supplies.”
Of course she wasn’t joking. She wouldn’t bring the cutest animal ever home only to take him back. That would be a very cruel joke. And apparently Peeta was the evil one in this relationship. “I’m sure,” Caroline confirmed her eyes now shining with excitement. “I mean look how cute he is. We can definitely take care of him,” between the two of them it should be no problem. Besides how hard could it be? Granted she knew next to nothing about hedgehogs but she couldn’t pass him up.
“Yeah, and like a book or pamphlet or something on how to take care of him,” Caroline agreed leaning over to give Peeta a kiss, careful not to smoosh his hand with their new pet. “We’ll take him with us,” she added as she pulled away.
“Of course we need to know how to take care of him. Or else we’re going to end up killing him and I am not going to deal with that,” Peeta commented with a laugh as he returned the kiss, “Where in the world did you get him?” He didn’t think that she had fully planned on coming home with a hedgehog today, so he was curious about what had happened between school and home that would lead to this.
“Don’t even say that!” That was no joking matter. They would not kill their hedgehog, which needed a name but for now getting supplies was the important part. “This guy on campus was giving them away. And I just couldn’t pass it up.” She almost apologized for being so impulsive about it all but Peeta seemed to already love the little guy. “Now come on let’s go. You can think of a name for him on the way.” She’d leave the naming to Peeta since she had picked him out and everything.
“Why do I have to come up with a name?” Peeta questioned as he held onto the little guy and made to go grab his wallet so they could get to the pet store in a timely manner. He didn’t even know what a hedgehog ate and he was going to be googling when they were in the car and at the store, “And leave it to you to think that it would be fun to get a pet from some dude on campus. You at least keep things interesting.” The comment was made with a smile because he did enjoy that part of Caroline and he liked their relationship to not be boring.
“Because I picked him out. I figure it’s only fair,” Caroline replied as they exited the apartment. She still had her keys in hand and Peeta was holding the hedgehog so she locked the door behind them before heading back to her car.
“Well, could you really have passed it up? Admit it, you totally love him already.” He was pretty hard not to fall in love with, he was pretty much just a ball of prickly adorableness.
“Rude,” Peeta laughed as he followed along as they made their way to her car. He was already grabbing his phone out of his pocket and asking Siri to tell him about hedgehogs and how they could make sure to make this little dude thrive, “Sonic is always an option. Or Peter Quill from Guardians of the Galaxy.”
“And he is pretty cute although I’m really not sure what else he can do,” he hadn’t watched the hedgehog run around or anything and he was curious to see him curl up into a complete ball.
Peeta was almost as adorable as the hedgehog with how he was already googling things. The little doubt she had about bringing him home was gone now. She laughed a little at his name ideas. “You are such a nerd sometimes,” she teased. “But Sonic is a classic,” and there was nothing wrong with the classics.
“Google it?” she replied as she clicked the car unlocked and climbed in. “After you figure out about the food,” first thing first.
“Oh I am definitely going to google everything I can until we can get our hands on a book. I hope these things aren’t illegal in California,” Peeta knew there were a few pets that you couldn’t keep in this state, so he didn’t want to walk into the pet store and be yelled at by the employees for having an illegal animal. He studied his phone as he tried to find out what the hedgehogs ate, “insects, mollusks, small animals, fruits, and greens apparently.”
Caroline had no idea, she hadn’t checked into it or anything yet. Usually she planned things out did her research but when she saw how cute she didn’t pass him up. Besides even if they were she doubted anyone actually went around checking on those things. And if they did, she’d just compel them out of any trouble. “Small animals? What’s even smaller than tiny thing?” Caroline ask nodding at Peeta’s hand before turning her attention back to the road. “I mean like ants, but that’s an insect.” Because, duh. “And don’t worry, I’ll use compulsion if I need to.”
“I’m not quite sure. I’ve got to properly look into it, but that was just initial thing that came up from Google. I guess we can also ask people at the petstore if they happen to know. If they don’t have any books on taking care of them then we may have to get one from the library,” Peeta reached down to playfully stroke the Hedgehog’s tummy and grinned when it flexed around in his hand. He was most certainly adorable and Peeta couldn’t help but fall in love with the animal just a little bit.
“Do you think we need to find a vet?” They probably did. They wanted him to be taken care of if he ever got sick or something which she really hoped that never happened. That could be an issue if it wasn’t legal but again, compulsion. “Do they sell books at pet stores?” She had no idea. She’d never had a pet before, well a goldfish when she was little but she didn’t think that counted. “Oh my god!” She was usually more prepared than this, more organized. “We have so much to do now. Okay, pet store, library, vet,” she began listing things they needed to take of, like today.
“Um, probably? We can talk to some and see if anyone would be able to treat him since he’s more of an exotic animal,” Peeta commented and couldn’t help but chuckle, “Sometimes they do. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a pet store. And yes, we have a lot to do, which happens when these things are done spontaneously. But, I think we’ll be fine as long as we get the basics at the store today and if we can’t find any books right away we have handy Google.” He reached over to squeeze her hand lightly with his free one and smiled - it would be alright and they would be able to take care of their new pet.
Caroline had no idea how people survived before Google. But she was still going to be reading like all the books ever on hedgehogs. As soon as they got some. A smile slowly formed on her face when he squeezed her hand.”You’re right,” she said finally taking a breath as she pulled into the pet store parking lot. “He’s going to be the best cared for hedgehog ever.”
